Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) estimated from satellite data are affected by various kinds of disturbance factors. In order to accurately estimate SSTs based on radiometric data observed by satellite, it is important to correct the effects by these disturbance factors. We obtained a huge data set of skin sea surface temperature images observed by a thermal infrared camera (TIC) in MUBEX Campaign. TIC installed on an observation vessel recorded sea surface skin temperature distribution under various weather conditions. Based on some special images observed by TIC, we estimated skin effects and effective sea surface emissivity. In this paper, we report the methods and results of these estimations.
Ocean heat fluxes over a wide region are generally estimated by an aerodynamic bulk fromula. Though a remote sensing technique can be expected to estimated global heat flux, it is difficult to obtain air temperature and specific humidity at sea surface by a remote sensor. In this study present a new method with which to determine near-sea surface air temperature from in situ data. Also, These methods compared with other methods. A new method used a linear regression equation between sea surface temperature and air temperature of the buoys data. In this study new method is validated using observed monthly mean data at the Japan Meteorological Agency(JMA), National Data Buoy Center(NDBC) and Tropical Ocean-Global Atmosphere(TOGA)-Tropical Atmosphere Ocean(TAO) buoys. The result that bias and rmse are 0.28, 1.5$0^{\circ}C$ respectively. The correlation coefficient is 0.98. Also, to retrieve near-sea surface specific humidity(Q) from good nonlinear regression relationship between vapor pressure(Ea) of buoy data and air temperature, after obtained the third-order polynomial function, compared with that of estimated from SSM/I empirical equation by Schussel et al(1995). The result that bias and rmse are -1.42 and 1.75(g/kg).
In order to understand the co-culture impact of the sea squirt Halocynthia roretzi on the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas, we examined the filtration rate of the sea squirt in relation of water temperature ($5-25^{\circ}C$) and body weight. The filtration rate increased in relation to body weight and water temperature, indicating a clear positive correlation with the two variables. Due to the clear positive correlation between filtration rates at each temperature groups for acceptable collinearity, each constants at regression equation was further analyzed for a unified model of filtration rate. Therefore the filtration rate of H. roretzi was estimated as: Fr (L/h/animal)=$(0.1956+0.0182T){\times}DW^{0.7978EXP(-0.0273T)}$ for water temperature in the range of $5-25^{\circ}C$. The estimated filtration rates of H. roretzi were higher than those of C. gigas in the winter season (water temperatures below $16^{\circ}C$) in condition of equal body weight. Our results indicate that H. roretzi may have an advantage over C. gigas in food competition during the winter season when the two species are co-cultured.

Morphological and positional characteristics of anchovy aggregations, confirmed by trawling, were examined in two locations of the southern part of theWest Sea (T1) and the western side of South Sea (T11) of South Korea. Morphological characteristics (mean length, height and area) of the anchovy aggregations at T1 were smaller than those at T11, however the positional characteristics (distributional depth and bottom depth) of the aggregations at T1 were larger than those at T11. Diverse dataset such as the ship's cruise track, the cruse map, and interpolated three-dimensional-like water temperature were visualized in multiple dimensions. For a comprehensive understanding of the anchovy aggregations within their surrounding circumstances, the interpolated water temperature transferred to the location of anchovy aggregations at both stations were visualized based on geospatial information. Using quantitative investigation, the overall range of change in water temperature and salinity of anchovy aggregations at stations was considerably small. However, the water temperature and salinity of anchovy aggregations at T11 were somewhat higher than those at T1.
Oceanic temperature inversions, with unstable stratifications, are frequently founed in the surface layer of a few tens meters in the Japan Sea and the Yellow Sea in Winter. Mechanisms responsible for the generation of temperature inversions include the followings: (1) The nat heat loss at the sea suface requires an upward transport of heat from the interior of the ocean y convection, and this convection leads to the temperature inversions. (2) The downward propagation of the annual variation of the sea surface timperature, with an exponential decrease of amplitude and a linear change of phase with depth, generates the surface inversion layer in winter. (3) The cold water cdvection by Ekman drift, of which magnitude decreases exponentially with depth, generates temperature inversions for the three possible mechanisms mentioned above.

When freezing is present on ballast water, it can impose additional loads on the hull and effect on stabilization of ship. The anti-icing techniques of ballast water, therefore, are key criteria for ship safety. The existing anti-icing techniques of ballast tank are hull heating, water circulation and air bubble system etc. In this research, anti-icing performance tests for the ballast water using micro-bubble system and sea water circulation system have been carried out at two temperature conditions($-10^{\circ}C$ and $-25^{\circ}C$). Ambient temperature, sea water temperature and temperature of the inner parts of the ballast tank are measured and also ballast water conditions are checked during the model test. The applied anti-icing techniques of ballast water, such as micro-bubble system and sea water circulation system show good performance in the low temperature conditions.
Ice cliff retreat and sea-ice formation around King Sejong Station in King George Island were analysed and compared with air temperature change. Analysis of 33-year (1969-2001) air temperature records at Bellingshausen Station has revealed regional atmospheric warming, and the increasing rate of air temperature Is equivalent to a warming of $1^{\circ}C$ for 27-year period. Here we present time-series of observations for the areal extent of the ice cliff and ice sheet, showing that they have retreated dramatically in the past 45 years (1956-2001). Retreat of 1,050 m in length of the ice clifr has changed the Marian Cove into a low rectangular form of 4 km in length and 1 to 1.3km in width. The retreat rates have since increased from 6 m/yr of the Primary investigated Period to 54 and 81m/yr in the recent years. Exceptionally, the ice cliff had been advanced of 21m in length for a year between 1987 and 1988 of cold winters. Ice sheet in King George Island also shows a similar decrease, and the decreasing extent is much larger at the southern part of the Main Cove, relatively more exposed to the sun, than at the northern part. Comparing sea-ice formation in winter with air temperature data shows a pattern starting to freeze below $-5^{\circ}C$ and to thaw over $-3^{\circ}C$. It is conclusively estimated that the patterns and magnitudes of ice cliff retreat and sea-ice formation are consistent with fluctuations of the air temperature, and that the recent rapid retreat of ice cliff and less formation of sea-ice are caused especially by the warming trends in autumn accompanied with expansion of summer thawing period.
Rainfall events in the hydrologic circulation are closely related with various meteorological factors. Therefore, in this research, correlation relationship was analyzed between sea surface temperature of typical meteorological factor and monthly rainfall on Korean peninsula. The cluster analysis was performed monthly average rainfall data, longitude and latitude observed by rainfall observatory in Korea. Results from cluster analysis using monthly rainfall data in South Korea were divided into 4 regions. The principal components of monthly rainfall data were extracted from rainfall stations separated cluster regions. A correlation analysis was performed with extracted principal components and sea surface temperatures. At the results of correlation analysis, positive correlation coefficients were larger than negative correlation coefficients. In addition, The 3 month of principal components on monthly rainfall predicted by locally weighted polynomial regression using observed data of sea surface temperature where biggest correlation coefficients have. The result of forecasting through the locally weighted polynomial regression was revealed differences in accuracy. But, this methods in the research can be analyzed for forecasting about monthly rainfall data. Therefore, continuous research need through hydrological meteorological factors like a sea surface temperature about forecasting of the rainfall events.
Four dimensional data assimilation (FDDA) technique was considered for 3 dimensional wind field in coastal area and a set of 3 numerical experiments including control experiments has been tested for the case of the synoptic weather pattern of the weak northerly geostrophic wind with the cloud amount of less than 5/10 in autumn. A three dimensional land and sea breeze model with the sea surface temperature (SST) of 290K was performed without nudging the observed wind field and surface temperature of AWS (Automatic Weather System) for the control experiment. The results of the control experiment showed that the horizontal temperature gradient across the coastline was weakly simulated so that the strength of the sea breeze in the model was much weaker than that of observed one. The experiment with only observed horizontal wind field showed that both the pattern of local change of wind direction and the times of starting and ending of the land-sea breeze were fairly well simulated. However, the horizontal wind speed and vertical motion in the convergence zone were weakly simulated. The experiment with nudgings of both the surface temperature and wind speed showed that both the pattern of local change of wind direction and the times of starting and ending of the land-sea breeze were fairly well simulated even though the ending time of the sea breeze was delayed due to oversimulated temperature gradient along the shoreline.
This study examines the relationship among temperature, wind, and sea level pressure to understand recent warming in the vicinity of the Antarctic Peninsula. To do this, the surface air temperature, NCEP/NCAR reanalysis wind data and sea level pressure data for the period of 40 years are analyzed. The 40-year surface air temperature data in the Antarctic Peninsula reveals relatively the larger warming trends for autumn and winter than other seasons. The variability of the surface air temperature in this region is compared with that of the regional atmospheric circulation. The surface air temperature is positively correlated with frequency of northwesterlies and negatively correlated with frequency of southeasterlies. This relation is more evident in the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula for autumn and winter. The trend analysis of wind frequency in the study area shows increasing and decreasing trends in the frequency of northwesterlies and southeasterlies, respectively, in the northwestern part of the Weddell Sea for autumn and winter. And also it is found that these winds are closely related with decreasing of sea level pressure in the southeastern region of the Antarctic Peninsula. Furthermore from the seasonal variation of sea level pressure in this area, it may be presumed that decreasing of sea level pressure in the southeastern region of the Antarctic Peninsula is related with warming in the vicinity of the Antarctic Peninsula for autumn and winter. Therefore it can be explained that recent warming in the vicinity of the Antarctic Peninsula is caused by positive feedback mechanism, that is, the process that warming in the vicinity of the Antarctic Peninsula can lead to the decrease of sea level pressure in the southeastern region of the Antarctic Peninsula and these pressure decrease in turn lead to the variation of wind direction in northwestern part of Weddell Sea, again the variation of wind direction enhances the warming in the Antarctic Peninsula.
