  • To investigate the physio-chemical components and properties of aerosol particles in urban area sampling of aerosol particles was carried out in the campus of Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan, during snowfall. Aerosol particles were collected on millipore filter papers using a low volume air sampler. Their shapes, sizes and chemical components were analyzed by a SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) and an EDX(Energy Dispersive X-ray). As a results, ice crystals of dendrite and column types were predominantly shown at mature and developing stage of snowfall intensity. The denerite and sector plate types of ice crystals were mainly originated from the sea but column types were come from soil. Scavenging effect by snowfall was greatly also shown at dendrite type ice crystals that embryo was fully developd. Al, Si elements were shown at high frequencies as compared with others. Na, Cl components were especially shown at high frequencies under the sea-breeze wind during snowfall. Anthropogenic aerosol particles had shown with irregular shapes and sizes, relatively. Mainly 3-7$\mu$m aerosol particles were abundant and coarse particles also could be seen during snowfall. Ca, Zn, Fe components mainly caused by spike tires from vehicles in winter season were dominant before snowfall, however the element S mainly caused by human activity was rich after snowfall. The pH values of snow in Sapporo city were higher than those at coastal area. The concentration of chemical components in aerosol particles was also affected by surface winds. Aerosol particles in urban area, Sapporo were mainly affected by human activities like vehicles and combustion with wind system. And their types were related with snowfall intensity.

  • This study analyzed the impact of recirculation on high-concentration PM2.5 in the coastal area. Through the analysis of observational data, it was observed that the development of sea breeze led to an increase in PM2.5 and SO42- concentrations. Hysplit backward trajectory analysis confirmed the occurrence of air mass recirculation. Results from WRF and CMAQ numerical simulations indicated that pollutants transported from land to sea during the night were re-transported to the land by daytime sea breeze, leading to high-concentration PM2.5 in Busan. To quantitatively investigate the recirculation a recirculation factor (RF) was calculated, showing an increase in RF values during high-concentration PM2.5 episodes. However, the RF values varied slightly depending on the time resolution of meteorological data used for the calculations. This variation was attributed to the terrain characteristics at observation sites. Additionally, during long-range transported days leading to nationwide high-concentration PM2.5 events, synoptic-scale circulation dominated, resulting in weaker correlation between PM2.5 concentration and RF values. This study enhances the understanding of the influence of recirculation on air pollution. However, it is important to consider the impact of temporal resolution and terrain characteristics when using RF for evaluating recirculation during episodes of air pollution.

  • The sea breeze shows different characteristics compared to land breeze, such as high wind speed and more rapider shift period. One of the major factors affecting plant early growth is wind speed. In the early growth stage, tree growth-rates rise with decreasing wind speed. Thus, the study was performed to identify wind break effects on wind characteristics and tree growth. The wind break used in this study was about 130 meters length and 3 meters height, made up with poly-ethylene (with 40% openness). We installed one vane and fifteen anemographs at three different heights (1, 2 and 3 meters) on the inner and outer wind break areas. The wind characteristic and plant growth data were collected from Jun. 2011 to Oct. over 2012. The wind rose of the Saemangum seawall area presented the north (21.5%) and it was followed by north-west (18.1%), east (14.9%) and north-east (13.7%) and the remainder with other directions. Wind speeds at height were different. The tree height was 159.6 cm at inside and 129.6 cm at outside. The diameter at root-collar was 36.9 mm at inside and 32.6 mm at outside from wind break.

  • An analysis of wind environments using computational fluid dynamics and an evaluation of wind resources using measurement data obtained from meteorological observation sites at Homi-Cape, Pohang have been carrid out for siting a wind farm. It was shown that a numerical simulation using computational fluid dynamics would provide reliable wind resource map in complex terrain with land-sea breeze condition. As a result of this investigation, Homi-Cape wind farm with 11.25 ㎿ capacity has been designed for maximum power generation and 25.7 GWh electricity production is predicted.

• Air pollution potentials of the 7 cities in the central part of Korea were obtained with the mean wind speed within the mixed layer and the mixed layer height calculated by the Jump Model. Seasonal variation of the afternoon mixed layer height in Seoul area shows that low in winter and high in summer. Annual mean of the morning air pollution potential was lowest in Incheon and highest in Wonju. On the other hand annual mean of the afternoon air pollution potential was lowest in Incheon and highest in Chuncheon. Relatively low air pollution potential in Incheon can be explained as high mixed layer height and the effect of sea breeze.

  • The Characteristics of atmospheric flow and dispersion of air pollutants in the mountainous coastal area were studied using three-dimensional model by the combination of land/sea breezes and transport. It was then applied to Pusan city. As the urban area considered In this study is located in a mountainous coastal area, the atmospheric flow is strongly affected by the land/sea breezes and mountain/valley winds. The typical effects of land/sea breezes on the dispersion and the characteristics of pollutants movement in the region were analysed. The model has been proved to be an useful tool to prodict real time air pollutants transport as shown by the results of application studies In Pusan, Korea which Is an urbanized coastal area with mountainous topography. It was found that the pollutants are differently transported and concentrated as going Inland by the Influence of the sea breeze with topographic changes. By comparing the pollutants concentrations of the stimulated results with those of the observational results, It is shown that stimulated results in this study are in qualitative agreement with observational ones.

  • The impact of urbanization on local meteorology (e.g., surface temperature, PBL height, wind speed, etc.) in the Greater Seoul Area (GSA) was quantitatively evaluated based on a numerical modeling approach during a 1-month period of 2001 (9 Sep. through 8 Oct. 2001). The analysis was carried out by two sets of simulation scenarios: (1) with the global land use and topographic data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in 1990s (i.e., LU-USGS case) and (2) with the land use data from the Environmental Geographic Information System (EGIS) along with the 3 sec elevation data from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) in 2000s (i.e., LU-EGIS case). The extension of urban areas in the GSA (especially, the southern parts of Seoul) accounted for 1.8% in the LU-USGS case and 6.2% in the LU-EGIS case. For the simulations, the surface temperature and PBL height due to urbanization in the LU-EGIS case was higher (the differences of up to $0.1^{\circ}C$ and 36 m, respectively) than those in the LU-USGS case, whereas the wind speed (up to 0.3 $ms^{-1}$) in the former was lower than that in the latter at 1500 LST. The increase in surface temperature due to urbanization in the GSA (especially, the southern parts of Seoul) was led to the strong convergence of air masses, causing the early sea breeze and its rapid propagation to inland locations. In addition, the vertical mixing motion in the extended urban areas for the LU-EGIS case was predicted to be stronger than that for the LU-USGS case and vice versa for the original urban areas.

  • The seasonal variations of ozone ($O_3$) concentrations were investigated with regard to the relationship between $O_3$ and wind distributions at two different sites (Jung Ang (JA): a semi-closed topography and Seo Chang (SC): a closed topography) within a valley city (Yangsan) and their comparison between these sites (JA and SC) and two non-valley sites (Dae Jeo (DJ) and Sang Nam (SN)) located downwind from coastal cities (Busan and Ulsan). This analysis was performed using the data sets of hourly $O_3$ concentrations, meteorological factors (especially, wind speed and direction), and those on high $O_3$ days exceeding the 8-h standard (60 ppb) during 2008-2009. In summer and fall (especially in June and October), the monthly mean values of the daily maximum $O_3$ concentrations and the number of high $O_3$ days at JA (and SC) were relatively higher than those at DJ (and SN). The increase in daytime $O_3$ concentrations at JA in June was likely to be primarily impacted by the transport of $O_3$ and its precursors from the coastal emission sources in Busan along the dominant southwesterly winds (about 5 m/s) under the penetration of sea breeze condition, compared to other months and sites. Such a phenomenon at SC in October was likely to be mainly caused by the accumulation of $O_3$ and its precursors due to the relatively weak winds under the localized stagnant weather condition rather than the contribution of regional transport from the emission sources in Busan and Ulsan.
