Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of dietary selenium (Se) from Se-enriched kale sprout (SeKS), selenomethionine (SeMet), and sodium selenite (SS) on performance, carcass characteristics and Se concentrations in the tissues, and to study the relationship between Se concentrations in muscle and feather in growing quails. Methods: The 320 quails (7 d of age) were divided into four treatments, according to a completely randomized design. The treatments were T1: control diet; T2, T3, and T4: control diets plus 0.2 mg Se/kg from SS, SeMet, and SeKS, respectively. The performance, carcass characteristics, and Se concentrations in the tissues of quails were determined. Results: The results indicated no effect (p>0.05) of Se supplementation on performance, carcass characteristics and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in breast muscle of quails. Supplemental Se from SS, SeMet, and SeKS increased greater (p<0.05) Se concentrations in breast muscle, liver, kidney, heart, and feather, compared to those of quails fed the control diet. Quails fed Se from SeMet had greater (p<0.05) Se concentrations in the tissues than quails fed Se from SeKS and SS. In addition, Se concentrations in breast muscle and feather of quails at 21 and 42-d-old were highly correlated (R2 0.714 to 0.756) (p<0.05). Conclusion: Performance, carcass characteristics and GSH-Px activity in breast muscle of quails were not affected (p>0.05) by dietary Se supplementation. The Se from SeMet was more effective in increasing Se concentrations in the tissues of quails than Se from SeKS and SS. Feather Se concentrations of 21 and 42-d-old quails can be used for assessment of Se bioavailability of Se sources.
This experiment was conducted to evaluate the bioavailability of different organic selenium (Se) products in finishing pigs. A total of 48 growing pigs, average body weight $47.6kg{\pm}0.05$, were allotted to four different treatments in a randomized complete block (RCB) design in three replicates with four pigs per pen. Three different organic Se products, Se-enriched yeast (treatments A and B) and Se-proteinate (treatment C), were used in conjunction with a basal diet with no added Se as a control treatment. In growing period, pigs were fed the same diet but finishing pigs were fed each treatment diet containing organic Se products for 6 weeks. During the experimental period, feed intake and body weight were measured and blood samples were collected to determine the Se concentration. At the end of this experiment, 3 pigs per treatment were killed and various tissues (loin, liver, kidney, pancreas and spleen) were collected to analyze the Se concentration. The body weight, and average daily feed intake (ADFI) were similar among treatments, but the average daily gain (ADG) was increased on Se-proteinate treatment (p<0.01) and gain-to-feed ratio (G/F ratio) was improved on Se yeast B or Se-proteinate treatment (p<0.01). The tissue Se content was also increased when pigs were fed organic Se sources, and Se was retained efficiently in loin (p<0.01) and kidney (p<0.05) when Se yeast B was provided. The serum Se concentration was increased when organic Se was provided and was higher when pigs were fed Se-proteinate (p<0.01); subsequently liver Se was also higher on Se-proteinate treatment than other treatments. The Se yeast A treatment did not show any increment of Se concentration both in serum and tissues. This result demonstrated that Se retention and bioavailability in finishing pigs were varied by Se products although organic sources were provided. Consequently, each organic Se product should be evaluated before it is used as a supplement in animal feed.
This study was conducted to determine effects of different selenium (Se) sources on performance, carcass characteristics, blood measures (whole blood Se concentration and plasma glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity), and Se concentrations in tissues of finishing Hanwoo steers (Korean native steers). Twenty finishing Hanwoo steers (average body weight=536${\pm}$23.4 kg, average age=approximately 20 months) were allotted to treatments in four groups of five steers per pen for 16 weeks preceding slaughter. Treatments were control (CON), spent mushroom composts from Se-enriched mushrooms (Se-SMC), selenized yeast (Se-Y), and sodium selenite (SS). Dietary Se levels of all treatments except CON were 0.9 mg Se/kg on the dry matter basis. Body weight was measured at the first and final day of trial, and blood samples were collected to analyze whole blood Se concentration and plasma GSH-Px activity at 2, 4, 8, and 16 weeks. At the end of trial, steers were slaughtered to collect muscle and liver samples for their Se analyses, and carcass data were recorded. In terms of dry matter intake, body weight gain and carcass characteristics, no significant differences among treatments were observed. Whole blood Se concentrations were significantly higher (p<0.05) for Se-SMC and Se-Y treatments than for CON at each collection period, with no significant difference between SS and CON. For weeks 2 and 8, there was no significant difference for whole blood Se concentration between Se-SMC and Se-Y, but for weeks 4 and 16, Se-Y treatments were significantly higher (p<0.05) than Se-SMC. No differences were observed for plasma GSH-Px activity between Se-SMC and Se-Y. The Se concentrations in hind leg and liver were significantly different among treatments (p<0.05) and those in both tissues ranked the greatest in Se-Y, followed by Se-SMC, SS, and CON treatments. However, tissue Se concentration for SS was not different from that for CON. These results showed that feeding organic Se sources such as Se-SMC and Se-Y enhanced Se concentration in tissues, while SS, the most common supplement of inorganic Se, was inefficient in Se deposition. Even though Se-Y had a higher Se concentration in tissues than Se-SMC, replacing Se-Y with Se-SMC in diets of beef steers would be an inexpensive way to increase Se concentration in beef.
The present study was designed to determine if prenatal and postnatal Se nutriture affects Se concentration, glutathione peroxidase(GSHPx) activity and phospholipid distribution of the neonatal rat lung. Female SD rats were bred and fed a semipurified Se-deficient(0.04ppm, Se-) or a Se-adequate(0.5ppm, Se+) diet through pregnancy and lactation. On d 2 of lactation, maternal dietary Se had no significant effect on pulmonary Se concentration of pups. On d 16 of lactation, mean milk Se concentration in Se- dams was significantly lower than that in Se+ dams. Milk Se concentration was reflected on lung Se concentration and GSHPx activity of d 16 pups, which were dramatically decreased in Se- pups. In addition, pulmonary disaturated phosphatidyl choline/total phosphatidyl choline ratio was also significantly decreased in Se- pups, implying impaired function of pulmonary surfactant. These data indicate that adequate Se nutrition is important in the maturation of neonatal rat lungs.
This preliminary feeding trial was conducted to study the effects of different dietary selenium (Se) levels on growth performance and toxicity in juvenile black seabream, Acanthopagrus schlegeli (Bleeker). Fish averaging $7.0{\pm}0.1g$ ($mean{\pm}SD$) were fed one of the five semi-purified diets containing 0.21, 0.30, 0.52, 1.29 and 12.3 mg sodium selenite ($Na_2SeO_3$)/kg diet (Se 0.21, Se 0.30, Se 0.52, Se 1.29 or Se 12.3) for 15 weeks. After the feeding trial, weight gain (WG), feed efficiency (FE), specific growth rate (SGR) and protein efficiency ratio (PER) of fish fed Se 0.21, Se 0.30, Se 0.52 and Se 1.29 diets were not significantly different, however fish fed Se 12.3 diet showed significantly lower WG, FE, SGR and PER than those of fish fed the other diets (p<0.05). Fish fed Se 0.21, Se 0.30, Se 0.52, Se 1.29 and Se 12.3 diets showed no significant differences in hematocrit (PCV), hemoglobin (Hb) and red blood cells (RBC), however fish fed Se 12.3 diet showed lower values of PCV, Hb and RBC than those of fish fed the other diets. Histopathological lesions such as tubular necrosis and polycystic dilation of tubules in the kidney tissues were observed in fish fed Se 12.3 diet. Se was accumulated in a dose-dependent manner in the liver, kidney, muscle and gill tissues. Based on the results of this preliminary feeding trial, a dietary Se level of 0.21 mg $Na_2SeO_3/kg$ diet could be optimal for proper growth performances, and a dietary Se level of 12.3 mg $Na_2SeO_3/kg$ diet may ultimately be toxic to juvenile black seabream, Acanthopagrus schlegeli.
This study was designed to determine whether selenium (Se) nutrition affects pulmonary glutathione peroxidase and alveolarization in the neonatal rat. Twenty-four female Sprague Dawley rats were bred and fed a semipurified Se-deficient (0.04 ppm, Se-) or a Se-adequate (0.5 ppm, Se+) diet through pregnancy and lactation. Pulmonary DNA synthesis was slightly higher in Se+ pups than in Se- pups on d 6 and d 9 of lactation, but significant difference was not found. As pulmonary alveolarization progressed, mean air space size decreased and internal surface area and lung volume increased. No difference in pulmonary alveolarization was found between Se- and Se+ pups by age. Pulmonary Se concentration was higher in Se+ pups than in Se- pups at all age. Glutathione peroxidase activity in lung tissur reflected Se status and was lower in Se- pups than in Se+ pups. In conclusion, selenium has no significant effect on alveolarization of neonatal lungs. but it is necessary for adequate supply of pulmonary antioxidant, glutathione peroxidase.
안젤리카($138.4{\mu}g\;Se{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ FW), 카라웨이($167.8{\mu}g\;Se{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ FW), 카모밀(($116.6{\mu}g\;Se{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ FW), 마죠람(158.7 and $132.6{\mu}g\;Se{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ FW), 그리고 오레가노($62.5{\mu}g\;Se{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ FW)는 다른 작물들에 비해 높은 Se을 함유하고 있었다.
