  • This paper presents the characteristics of flank and tip seal leakage in a scroll compressor for air-conditioners with R-22 under actual operating conditions. It is well known that the leakage has significant effect on the performance of the scroll compressor. Experiments were performed by using indirect method for measuring mass flow rate passing through flank and tip seal under actual operating conditions, In addition, an analytical model for tip seal leakage was developed to investigate tangential and radial leakage observed at grooves and contact points of tip seals. For low oil concentration, theoretical results were compared with experimental data to verify the analytical model. As a result, leakages through flank and tip seal parts were evaluated as afunction of pressure ratio, orbiting angle, discharge pressure, tip clearance, and leakage point. It was also found that the tip seal leakage was considerable even though the tip seal provided adequate sealing effect.

  • In this work, the open-drive oil free air compressor is modified to activate an organic Rankine cycle system as an expanding machine. The shape of the modified scroll expander case is a rectangular parallelepiped and the size of the case is $0.0394m^3$. The scroll expander is operated in an ORC using R245fa as working fluid with various working conditions for the performance test. The test data points are used to calculate the parameters of the scroll expander semi-empirical simulation model. The simulation results are compared with the experimental results to validate the simulation model.

  • In order to investigate the cooling and heating characteristics of a variable-capacity system A/C applying a digital scroll compressor, the cooling and heating capacities and COP are measured by the psychrometric calorimeter. The capacity of the system is controlled by the digital scroll compressor, which is operated by controling PWM valve and the loading vs. unloading time. In the case of unloading compared that of loading, the consumption power of the compressor is about 11% and the capacity variation of the system A/C is within about 1%. When the system A/C is operated under the cooling and heating standard conditions, COP is nearly uniform but cooling capacity and heating capacity increase at minimum, rated and maximum modes. The system A/C applying the digital scroll compressor is effective for the range with high load or the width of large load variation. When the auxiliary heater is on, at the cold region, the system A/C produces the excellent heating capacity.

  • This paper presents the friction and anti-wear characteristics of nano-oil with a mixture of a refrigerant oil and carbon nano-particles in the thrust slide-bearing of scroll compressors. Frictional loss in the thrust slide-bearing occupies a large part of total mechanical loss in scroll compressors. The characteristics of friction and anti-wear using nano-oil is evaluated using the thrust bearing experimental apparatus for measuring friction surface temperature and the coefficient of friction at the thrust slide-bearing as a function of normal loads up to 4,000 N and rotating speed up to 3,200 rpm. It is found that the coefficient of friction increases with decreasing rotating speed and normal force. The friction coefficient of carbon nano-oil is 0.023, while that of pure oil is 0.03 under the conditions of refrigerant gas R-22 at the pressure of 5 bars. It is believed that carbon nano-particles can be coated on the friction surfaces and the interaction of nano-particles between surfaces can be improved the lubrication in the friction surfaces. Carbon nano-oil enhances the characteristics of the anti-wear and friction at the thrust slide-bearing of scroll compressors.

  • Compressor is one of the most widely employed component in fluid machinery system. It takes tremendous efforts to improve compressor efficiency which affects the coefficient of performance of air-conditioning and refrigeration systems directly. Among various types of compressor, scroll-type compressor is commonly prevalent one with its high compression capability despite relatively small size and weight. Numerous experimental studies have been done to develop for the scroll-type compressor; however, computational models to evaluate the compressor performance or efficiency are not much available in the course of compressor designing process. In this study, a computational model was developed on the basis of geometrical theory using 1-D commercial software AMESim. A simulation study was carried out using the model, and the simulation result was validated with analytical data. This research is expected to provide a viable tool for developing and optimizing a scroll-type compressor.

  • Performance of refrigerant oil at the thrust-bearing and at the journal-bearing of a scroll compressor is a significant factor. This paper presents the friction and anti-wear characteristics of nano oil with a mixture of a refrigerant oil and carbon nano particles in the journal bearing of scroll compressors. The characteristics of friction and anti-wear using nano-oil is evaluated using the disk on disk tester and the journal bearing tester for measuring friction surface temperature and the coefficient of friction at the journal bearing tester. In journal bearing test, the average friction coefficient of high concentration nano-oil was decreased down to 18% compared to raw oil under 4,500 N and 3,600 rpm. It is believed that nano particles can be coated on the wear surfaces and the interaction of nano particles between surfaces can be improved the lubrication in the friction surfaces. Worn surfaces of frictional specimen were measured with straightness. carbon nano oil enhances the characteristics of the anti-wear and friction at the joural bearing of scroll compressors.

  • This paper describes the characteristics of scroll type stirling engine receiver. Scroll type stirling engine operated scroll compressor and expander instead of piston. Pass dimension of the receiver was $14(W){\times}14(H)$ mm and total pass length was 5,049 mm. External dimension of the receiver was $300{\times}300mm$. The experimental facility consisted of parabolic dish concentrator, compressor to supply air, triplex air filter, and flowmeter. In this study, basic experimental conditions were set at a inlet pressure of 5 bar and volume flow rate of $25m^3/hr$. As a result, air temperature in receiver at each measuring position of point 1, 2, 3 were $241^{\circ}C$, $465^{\circ}C$, and $542^{\circ}C$ respectively at inlet pressure of 5.5 bar and volume flow rate of $24.6m^3/hr$. As DNI increasing, heat transfer coefficient of the receiver changed from $695W/m^2K$ to $827W/m^2K$. Average heat transfer coefficient of receiver in the experiment was $798W/m^2K$. In addition, receiver efficiency became about 83%.

  • This paper describes that the size of inactive zone can be directly applied to design multiblade fan/scroll system. From the experimental studies using a five hole pitot tube and smoke test, it is found that the size of inactive zone has linear relations with the mean velocity of impeller inlet and cut-off angle gives a great influences to the fan efficiency. For the practical design, a function related with geometric parameters(i.e. inner radius, cord length, cut-off clearance and cut-off angle) of fan/scroll system is suggested. By using these formulas, the size and distribution of inactive zone can be predicted without the measurements through the full domain, it can be possible to use them to know the efficiency improvement for new model designed.

  • This paper presents measurement processes of rotational accuracy and comparison of theoretical values in the main bearing of scroll compressor. The main bearing is a type of oil journal bearing, but it has an axial or helical groove. The generalized coordinate system method, which can handle this groove, is applied to calculate the pressure profile in the journal bearing. The orbits of journal shaft are calculated corresponding to the compressed gas forces and bearing reaction forces. Then, the orbits are measured using three-point method. The results are compared to that from analyses.
