Experimental Study on Fuel/Air Mixing using Inclined Injection in Supersonic Flow (경사 분사에 의한 초음속 유동 연료-공기 혼합에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The flow of combustor in scramjet engine is supersonic speed. So residence time and mixing ratio are very important factors for efficient combustion. This study used open cavity on fuel/air mixing model and laser schlieren was carried out to investigate flow characteristics around a jet orifice and a cavity. A source of illumination has 10 ns endurance time so it can observe unsteady flow characteristics efficiently. Pressure was measured by varying momentum flux ratio. And the change of critical ignition point was observed to change of momentum flux ratio.

  • Performance of a dual mode ramjet engine based on the sensitivity analysis of design parameters (the gap between cowl and inlet spike and combustor length) was analyzed from the view points of aerodynamics and thermodynamics. A dual mode engine performing from supersonic to hypersonic (Mach no. 2 to 6) was designed in a proposed flight envelop. The design method and result were comparable to the results of the previous study, Hyperion RLV, and the CFD calculation.

  • The flow of combustor in scramjet engine has supersonic speed so that the residence time and mixing ratio are very important factors for the efficient combustion. This study used open cavity(L/D=4.8) as a fuel/air mixing model. Laser schlieren visualization and pressure measurement were carried out to observe the flow characteristics around a jet orifice and a cavity at the time of fuel injection. As a result of 10ns laser schlieren, unsteady flow which was around the cavity could be observed effectively. Pressure was measured that momentum flux ratio(J) was changed. And the change of critical ignition point could be observed by the momentum flux ratio changed.

  • A drastic pressure increment at the combustor inlet induced thermal choking is inevitable during scram-to-ramjet transitions. This phenomenon which is called by Non-Allowable Region(NAR) was observed on the excessive increment in the equivalent ratio. However, many studies were not investigated about factors which affects a variation of NAR. In the present study, a variation of NAR with regard to Mach number in the inlet of isolator is numerically and analytically analyzed. The conclusions from the investigation show that increasing the Mach number in the isolator inlet enlarged in the range of NAR.

Mixing and Penetration Studies of Transverse Jet into a Supersonic Crossflow (초음속 유동 내 공동을 이용한 수직 분사 혼합 및 연료 침투거리에 관한 연구)

  • A non-reacting experimental study on a normal injection into a Mach 1.92 crossflow which flows over various geometries(flat plate, small cavity, large cavity) was carried out to investigate the effect of the momentum flux ratio(J). The aft ramp of the cavity advances the increase of the penetration height and the strong two-dimensional shock from recompression region mainly affects the shock structure and mixing layer at the downstream flow. As flow runs downward, the transverse penetration height increases with increasing J(J = 0.9, 1.7, 3.4). However, above some critical ratio, jet penetration height growth with increasing J is not appeared in flow-field. Large scale cavity has a good mixing efficiency but it increases the drag loss in the combustor.

  • Design of a shape transition nozzle is carried out as a part of building a lab-scale supersonic combustion experimental equipment. In order to connect directly the circular shaped vitiation air heater to the square shaped scramjet combustor, area change is evaluated by using the method of characteristics. Shape transition function is introduced to control the transition rate. Boundary layer correction was made through the three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics with the assessment on the several shape transition functions. The shape transition nozzle is proved minimizing the growth of boundary layer at the center of the rectangular nozzle surfaces that caused by the pressure gradient at the corners of the rectangular nozzle and the following recirculation regions.

  • Transpiration cooling is the most effective cooling technique for liquid rocket and air-breathing engines operating in aggressive environments with higher pressures and temperatures. Combustor liners and turbine vanes are cooled by the coolant(air or fuel) passing through their porous walls and also the exit coolant acting as an insulating film. However, its practical implementation has been hampered by the limitations of available porous materials. The search for more practical methods of increasing the internal heat transfer within the walls has led to the development of multi-laminate porous structures, such as Lamilloy$^{(R)}$ and Transply$^{(R)}$. This paper reviews recent research activities of transpiration cooling for the propulsions of liquid rocket, gas turbine, and scramjet.
