An Experimental Study on Scout Area around Groynes with Permeability and Install Angle (투과율과 설치각도에 대한 수제주변 세굴영역에 관한 실험 연구)

  • There has been debated on the fact that a scour hole produced by the construction of a groyne has environmental benefits such as provision of diverse underwater habitats and shelter for fish in the event of flooding. Therefore researches are focusing on the scour field around the groyne area beyond the existing safety issues. The scour area on aquatic habitats would format many form on groyne conditions so that the analysis of scour area is strongly required. This study conducted the experiments on permeability and installation angle of groyne and suggested the data for groyne selection in environmental point as analyzing scour area. The physical modeling was performed in different permeability (0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%) and installation angle of groyne ($60^{\circ},\;90^{\circ},\;120^{\circ}$). As the result of the study, scour area and scour depth at maximum scour condition was revealed for each case and suggested the differences according to experiment conditions.

  • Scour protection methods can be categorized as two types: The first is to reduce the horseshoe and wake vortices which are the main reasons for local scour. Either small cylindrical structures or separated vertical deflectors can be placed in front of the pier or the horizontal deflector (or collar) can be attached to the pier like the spoiler to reduce the dynamics of vortical structures. The second is to employ the protection layer to keep the bed material in place, which is a common method with a merit of immediate effect by using block mat or tetrapod. This study examined the effect of scour reduction using the former method. The relationship between the reflector interval and reduction of scour was not clear. It is assumed that the width of the reflector is somewhat correlated with the reduction of the scour. As the KC numbers increases, the Effect of Scour reduction rate is shown to decrease. Also, Scour reduction rate showed a rapid change at $U_R=25$ or KC = 8.

A Study on The Bed Scour at Stream Bridge during Flood - In the case of Jeongjang Bridge in Gurye - (홍수시 소하천 교량에서의 하상세굴 연구 - 구례 정장교를 중심으로 -)

  • The hydrological frequency of the flood in July 2000 at Seosi stream basin in Gurye and the bed scour of the stream channel were estimated to investigate the bed scour related with Jeongjang bridge collapse. The storm over the basin in July 2000, 303mm/day was 103year frequency rainfall and the equivalent flood was 2580cms. As the results of 100year and 30year flood application, flood level 30.78~31.38m and mean velocity 3.79~4.03m/s were appeared. And the purification project of Seosi stream increased the velocity of the section near to Jeongjang bridge by the improvement of conveyance at the downstream. The local scour at pier was the major factor of bed scour at Jeongjang bridge site and the total scour at pier No.6 was increased from 2.32m to 2.45m by the purification project.

Prediction of Scour Depth Using Incorporation of Cluster Analysis into Artificial Neural Networks (인공신경망모형과 군집분석을 이용한 교각 세굴심 예측)

  • A local scour around a bridge pier is known as one of important factors of bridge collapse. Two approaches are usually used in estimating a scour depth in practice. One is to use empirical formulas, and the other is to use computational methods. But the use of empirical formulas is limited to predict a scour depth under similar conditions to which the formulas were derived. Computational methods are currently too expensive to be applied to practical engineering problems. This study presented the application of artificial neural networks (ANN) to the prediction of a scour depth around a bridge pier at an equilibrium state. This study also investigated various ANN algorithms for estimating a scour depth, such as Backpropagation Network, Radial Basis Function Network, and Generalized Regression Network. Preliminary study showed that ANN models resulted in very wide range of errors in predicting a scour depth. To solve this problem this study incorporated cluster analysis into ANN. The incorporation of cluster analysis provided better estimations of scour depth up to 42% compared with other approaches.

Analysis of Scour Phenomenon around Offshore Wind Foundation using Flow-3D Model (Flow-3D 모형을 이용한 해상풍력기초 세굴현상 분석)

  • Various types of alternative energy sources to petroleum are being developed both domestically and internationally as clean energy that does not emit greenhouse gases. In particular, offshore wind power has been studied because the wind resources are relatively limitless and the wind power is relatively smaller than onshore. In this study, to analyze the scour phenomenon around offshore wind foundations, mono pile and tripod pile foundations were simulated using a FLOW-3D model. The scour phenomenon was evaluated for mono piles: one is a pile with a 5 m diameter and d=1.69 m and the other is a pile with a 5 m diameter. Numerical analysis showed that in the latter, the falling-flow increased and the maximum scour depth occurred more than 1.7 times. For a tripod pile foundation, the measured velocity and the maximum wave condition were applied to the upstream boundary condition, respectively, and the scour phenomenon was evaluated. When the maximum wave condition was applied, the maximum scour depth occurred more than about 1.3 times. When the LES model was applied, the scour depth reached equilibrium, whereas the numerical results of the RNG model show that the scour phenomenon occurred in the entire boundary area and the scour depth did not reach equilibrium. To evaluate the scour phenomenon around offshore wind foundations, it is reasonable to apply the wave condition and the LES turbulence model to numerical model applications.

Review on Applicability of Local Scour Depth Calculation Formula in River (하천 세굴심 산정을 위한 교각 세굴심 산정식의 적용성 검토)

  • The basic analysis of Soil and structural mechanics for the bridge substructure affected by the flow of water is sufficient in the construction of such bridges, but the stability of scour resulting from hydraulic phenomena is insufficient. In addition, it is not enough to estimate the scour depth of the bridge which reflects the watershed characteristics of the domestic river because it uses the formula for calculating the scour depth of the overseas piers in calculating the scour depth of the bridge. In this study, the application of the CSU (1993) formula, which is currently applied to the national river design criteria, was reviewed between the two formulas after calculating the scour after calculating the scour by applying another bridge deck scour calculation formula to take into account the uncertainty in the calculation of scour. In this study, in addition to the CSU (1993) formula, which is currently applied to Korean river design criteria, another scour depth calculation formula is applied to calculate uncertainty in scour depth calculation, was reviewed between the two formulas. The review confirmed that the SSE (%) showed a difference of at least 2.08%, up to 91.23%, and SSEn(%) at least 0.19%, up to 415.91%, when compared to the measured depth of the pier based on the hydraulic model experiment and the depth of the pier calculated with the nine scour depth formulas in use. In other words, it is confirmed that there are many differences between the scouring formulas of piers. The results of this study are expected to be used to estimate scour depth in future river design.

  • Since bed elevation changes are mainly dependent on the flow velocity and corresponding shear stress, it is possible to predict bed elevation numerically using velocity components. For the scour analysis due to channel contraction, a bed load transport model is developed and applied to estimate scour depth around coffer dam in the Mississippi River. During Phase I of the Lock & Dam No. 26 replacement project, a coffer dam was constructed to reduce the flow area approximately by 50%. Flow velocity increases due to the flow area reduction yields significant lowering (erosion) of the channel bed elevation. The proposed numerical model solves the sediment continuity equation using the finite element method to evaluate scour process in the vicinity of the coffer dam

  • In this research, the reasonable local scour estimates considered conditions of the bed material and the flow was accomplished on two piers P14 and P17 of Il-san bridge. Especially, the Il-san bridge was located on the lower Han-river where is influenced by the tides of In-chon, and it has hydraulic condition that can cause the bridge piers local scour because of tides at ordinary times, as well as a flood. Therefore, the local scour depth has been presented influenced by the maximum velocity of the flow when a flood after construction and the tides on construction on the basis of the standards of river design and road design, furthermore, the results was made a comparative analysis. According to the results, the local scour depth on the basis of the standards of river design was higher than it on the basis of the standards of road design(SRICOS), and the local scour depth influenced by the maximum velocity of the flow when a flood after construction was determined the final local scour depth of P14 and P17 at the Il-san bridge. It was ascertained that the local scour depth did not exceed the inserted depth of bridge foundation.

A Study on the Scour Depth Equation in Bight River (하천 만곡부에서의 세굴심 산정식에 관한 연구)

  • Currently, we only estimate the average flood water level by the cross-sections of the river using one-dimensional numerical analysis when establishing the basic plans. However, the reliability decreases when it comes to the river bend. In river bend, the difference of water-level between the inside and the outside of the river arises by centrifugal force. And it is estimated less than what it could be estimated when establishing the plan with average estimate of flood level. It is apprehended that the exterior of the river will be under-constructed when establishing the scour depth only with the mean depth. In the case of local scour of the abutment, it is difficult to estimate its depth precisely, and it tends to be over-estimated in the case of the empirical formulas. Therefore, the modification considering the deviation of the water depth of the exterior of the river bend is needed. In observing the deviation of each formula in river bend, it is found: Andru's formula for 58%, followed by the Laursen's for 26%, and the C.S.U's for 17% in pier, while it is 44% for Froehlich's formula in abutment. Under the 500CMS of the flood discharge, the deviation of the scour depth between pier and abutment was about 10 %. However, in further flood discharge, it shows 24~58% the biggest in deviation of piers. It is concluded that the scour depth estimate should be done with 2-dimensional numerical analysis.
