  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis Is an unusual pattern of distal muscular atrophy with permanent bulbar sign. Vocal fold paralysis and velopharyngeal insufficiency(VPI) due to soft palate paralysis Is occasionally associated with distal muscular atrophy. Recently we experienced a case of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis whose symptom was initially expressed with hoarseness and VPI. So we report a case with review of literature.

  • Purpose: Underlying bone sclerosis is frequently observed in clinical settings when oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) invades the jaw bone. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and characteristics of underlying bone sclerosis in patients with OSCC. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the computed tomographic (CT) images of 131 patients who underwent mandibulectomy between January 2012 and December 2015 to treat OSCC. The presence, degree, and extent of underlying bone sclerosis were assessed on CT images and correlated with the following imaging patterns of bone invasion: cortical invasion, medullary invasion with a smooth margin, and medullary invasion with an irregular margin. The chi-square test was used to determine the relationships between the variables. Results: The prevalence of underlying bone sclerosis on CT images was 70.1% (47 of 67). The prevalence was 85.7% (42 of 49) in patients with medullary invasion, but it was 27.8% (5 of 18) in patients with only cortical invasion, indicating a significant increase in the prevalence of underlying bone sclerosis in patients with medullary invasion (P<.05). Aggressive patterns of bone invasion were associated with increases in the degree and extent of the underlying bone sclerosis(P<.05). Conclusion: More than two-thirds of OSCC cases with bone invasion showed underlying bone sclerosis. On CT images, reactive sclerosis in the remaining margin of the alveolar bone should not be used as the primary means to differentiate periodontal inflammatory lesions from those resulting from OSCC.

  • Background : Multiple Sclerosis is characterized by chronic inflammation, demyelinization and neurogliosis(plaque) in optic nerve, brain and spinal cord, which is recurrent visual disturbance, sensory disturbance, motor disturbance and sphincter disturbance, etc. Objective : This study was performed to evaluate the treatment of acupuncture therapy including Herbal Acupuncture and Bee venom Herbal Acupuncture in Multiple Sclerosis. Methods : We treated 5 cases of Multiple Sclerosis patients with mainly Bee venom Herbal Acupuncture therapy, and herbal Acupuncture, sa-am acupuncture form 18th september, 2001 to december, 2002. Results : 1 Of 5 cases who were treated with above, 3 patients were mildly reduced symptoms and 2 patients were no changes. 2. There are two patients who were definitely appeared the recurrent symptoms on treatment period, but decreased the remission period than before. 3. It has not shown noticeable recurrent symptoms of 3 patients. Conclusions : Bee Venom Herbal Acupuncture therapy and other acupuncture therapies were effective in reducing the recurrent symptoms and remission perod, but it was not evaluated the chief complaints on 5 cases of Multiple Sclerosis. We think that it need the further study and clinical trial for Multiple Sclerosis and other neurological diseases.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to report on a systemic sclerosis patient diagnosed with Yulgyuk and Banui syndrome improved by Korean medical treatment. Methods: We treated a 70-year-old woman who had swallowing disorders and frequent vomiting caused by systemic sclerosis with herbal medicine and acupuncture treatment for six months. Treatment was evaluated with a numerical rating scale (NRS). Results: After treatment, swallowing disorders and frequent vomiting decreased. The NRS decreased from 8 to 3. Conclusions: This case suggests that Korean medical treatment was effective for alleviating a swallowing disorder and frequent vomiting caused by systemic sclerosis as a conservative treatment.

Methods: We treated a 49-year-old male patient who has systemic sclerosis and trigeminal neuralgia by Korean medicine. He was treated from October 29th, 2022 to November 12th, 2022. The treatment applied was herbal medicine, acupuncture, pharmacopuncture. The evaluation was conducted by Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Results: After 14 days of treatment, the symptoms were alleviated. Facial pain and dullness of taste improved. VAS of discomfort was decreased from 10 to 2. Conclusions: These results showed that Korean medicine may have an effect on reducing symptoms of systemic sclerosis and trigeminal neuralgia.

  • Objectives This case study was about a Taeyangin patient with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis identified as Hae-Yeok pattern. In this study, we report the significant improvement of extremity weakness of this patient after Sasang Constitutional medicine treatment. Methods The patient was identified as Taeyangin Hae-Yeok pattern and treated with Ogapijangchuk-tang and acupuncture. Korean-Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating Scale-Revised (K-ALSFRS-R) was used to assess the overall function of the patient. And the Global Assessment Scale (GAS) was used to assess the change of upper and lower extremities weakness after the treatment.Result and Conclusion The K-ALSFRS-R total score decreased from 30 points to 26 points and extremity weakness showed significant improvement in GAS after 12 days treatment. Furthermore, walking distance was much longer after treatment. In conclusion, this study shows that Sasang constitutional medicine can be effective treatment for Taeyangin patient with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

  • Objectives : Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis(ALS) is a progressive disease that causes degeneration of the motor neurons of the brain and spinal cord. The purpose of this case study is to improvement of oriental mediacl treatment on ALS. Methods : The patients were treated by acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping therapy, herbal medication, physical treatment. To determine the effects of Oriental medical treatment, we evaluated weekly used by Korean version of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating Scale-Revised(K-ALSFRS-R), Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Severity Scale(ALSSS). Results : Symptoms such as cervical and shoulder pain, knee pain, cold sweating, insomnia etc were improved after above treatment. But K-ALSFRS-R and ALSSS were no improvement after above treatment. Conclusions : The Oriental medical treatment is effective on local symptoms of ALS, but there were no functional improvement of ALS in this case study. It is necessary to have more examination about ALS.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Korean medicine on a patient with dizziness due to hippocampal sclerosis. Methods: A 51-year-old woman with dizziness, diagnosed with hippocampal sclerosis, was treated with herbal medication, acupuncture, and moxibustion. Her improvement was evaluated by a balance test, NRS, and the percentage of dizziness severity compared to that on her admission day. Results: Improvement in the balance test result and NRS, and a decrease of percentage of dizziness severity, were observed after treatment with Korean medicine. Conclusions: This study suggests that treatment with Korean medicine may be an effective therapy for dizziness due to hippocampal sclerosis.
