The purpose of this study is to develop a measurement tool quantifying the degree of high school students' scientific experience. Based on previous studies, we divided the factors that compose school scientific experience into three categories: general activity experience, scientific inquiry experience and laboratory apparatus experience. While, outside of school scientific experience was divided into general activity experience, interesting activity experience and field trip experience. Items consisting each factor were selected from scientific experience measurement tools used in previous researches, most frequent answers showed in open questionnaire about scientific experiences, and exploratory analysis of textbooks. After the measurement tool developed by pilot-questionnaires and previous researches were preliminary tested and then was secondarily tested for a group of 413 high school students. The content validity and construct validity of the measurement tool was evaluated by two school teachers and two experts in science education and by factor analysis, respectively. The reliability of the tool was estimated with Cronbach Alpha. The results of validity and reliability revealed that the tool was appropriate for measuring scientific experience.
The purposes of this study were as follows; to investigate elementary school teachers' understanding of scientific inquiry, experiences in learning/teaching, their educational experience of scientific inquiry, and to study the difficulties they experience in teaching scientific inquiry methods to elementary students and their suggestions for future inquiry materials. For the purposes of this study, 157 elementary school teachers participated in a survey and 10 teachers were interviewed in-depth in relation to their ideas and experiences of scientific inquiry. The results show that most elementary school teachers had a lack of understanding of scientific inquiry skills, and lacked educational experiences of inquiry methods in general. They generally perceived the 7th science text-books as being inappropriate and inadequate for teaching students scientific inquiry processes. The educational implications are discussed to help practitioners implement scientific inquiries successfully through the various types of teaching materials and professional developments.

It is well known that high school girls' mean achievement levels in science tests are lower than high school boys' and that fewer women than men are employed as scientists and engineers pursue scientific careers. Many research attributed the sex difference in achievement level in science and the lack of women in science among others, to the experiential differences in scientific activities and the differences in attitudes toward science and scientists. Therefore, the study had its object to examine the sex difference by high school students in scientific experience and attitudes toward science and scientists. The differences in science experiences were identified at eight schools over rural and urban areas in Kangwon province. Science activities surveyed included use of experimental materials and instruments, observation of scientific phenomena, and extracurricular scientific activities. Attitude scale contained the nature of science, scientific research methods and philosophical views held by scientists. The study found sex differences in scientific experiences and attitudes. i. e.: fewer high school girls than boys had experience with scientific activities, especially with extracurricular activities; however, girls had more positive attitude toward science and more active desire to participate in science. Consequently, the study implies that, in order to narrow the gaps between achievement levels for boys and girls, science education should take consideration of the sex difference in experiences with and attitudes toward science.
In this study, the relationship between students' out-of-school science experience and their view on the nature of science was investigated. The participants were 267 sixth graders, 281 eighth graders, and 307 tenth graders from schools in Seoul. A test of views on the nature of science which consists of five items concerning the purpose of science, the definition of scientific theory, the nature of scientific model, the tentativeness of scientific theory, and the origin of scientific theory was administered. Students' out-of-school science experiences were measured with a subscale of the modified Science Experience Survey consisting of seven items. The results indicated that no statistically significant relationship was found between students' out-of-school science experience and their view on the nature of science in sixth graders. In eighth graders, high level students in terms of out-of-school science experiences were found to possess more contemporarily epistemological view in the item concerning the nature of scientific model but more falsificationist view in the item concerning the tentativeness of scientific theory. High level tenth graders in terms of out-of-school science experiences exhibited more epistemologically sophisticated understandings of the nature of science than their counterparts in the items concerning the purpose of science, the definition of scientific theory, and the nature of scientific model.

The physical computing education, as the emerging field, is a form of education that helps learners to develop the attitude of scientific inquiry by developing meaningful and creative output through the integration of hardware and software elements. Based on the literature, the authors of the study used science experience, school support and learning flow as the variables that predict the outcome variable which is the attitude of scientific inquiry. The authors collected data from 64 fourth and sixth graders who studied physical computing at an institution for the gifted and talented in Korea and then analyzed them using descriptive statistics, correlation, multiple regression and simple mediation analysis methods. As a result, science experience and learning flow significantly predicted the attitude of scientific inquiry. In addition, learning flow mediated the relationship between science experience and the attitude of scientific inquiry, and the relationship between school support and the attitude of scientific inquiry. Based on these results, the authors propose that to promote the attitude of scientific inquiry in physical computing education, strategies must be implemented for improving science experience, school support and learning flow in instructional design.
The purpose of this study was to develop a spider inquiry program for elementary school students based on the scientific-knowledge generating model. For the purposes of this study, we selected three species of snider (e.g. Pardosa astrigera, Argiope bruennichii, Nephila clavata) which were easily found in a school garden by elementary school students. The spider inquiry program was based on a model of the process of scientific-knowledge generation, and consisted of two sections: for students and teachers. The students' program was designed to generate scientific-knowledge, whilst the teachers' program was designed to guide the inquiry smoothly even in the case of teachers who lack experience in inquiry activities or possess limited subject knowledge on spiders. As a result, this program was found to have an influence on generating the scientific-knowledge of elementary students and the results further suggest that it may be helpful to teachers conducting an inquiry activity. Additionally, this program could be used as a selective activity lesson such as a science inquiry lesson, or as a biology inquiry class, as a weekend life experience study or as an activity on a science camp.
In Korea, the lower elementary grades are applying a topic-oriented integrated curriculum. It causes a lack of science content and inquiry experience for young children. The purpose of this study is to understand the scientific experiences and perceptions of the lower elementary graders and to inquire about the meaning of those experiences in their science learning. Four students (male 2, female 2), their parents, and their first-year homeroom teachers participated in the study. The data collection was mainly conducted through in-depth interview of them. Results showed that the 'experiments' were the student's the main perception of science, and the epistemic emotion that students mainly feel about science was 'curiousness'. Since most experiences were dependent on non-formal educational experience, the parents were an important factor to determine their experiences about science. Various factors, such as students' scientific experiences, their epistemic emotions, and the parents, interacted to form children's perception of science. The positive perception of science affected the level of motivation and expectation for science learning as the third grade. It is suggested that improvement of curriculum and textbooks should emphasize scientific exploration for the lower graders of elementary school, which provides them meaningful scientific experience in school.

This research examined the elementary students' level of motivation to learn science and analyzed correlation between scientific experiences and the motivations to learn science. 216 of elementary students in the 5th grade and 207 of elementary students in the 6th grade were surveyed with questionnaire composed of Likert criteria and scientific motivation questionnaire(SMQ), and the results were analyzed by SPSS 18.0 statistics program. The results of this research are as following : First, elementary school students' level of scientific experiences appeared quite low, and boys appeared to have more scientific experiences than girls. For more specific areas, the experiences were more from outside of school rather than inside, and experiences from science class. Second, elementary students' level of motivation to learn science stood relatively high, and boys showed higher level of motivation to learn science than girls. For more specific areas, the level of motivation from internal motivation area was the highest and the lowest was that from the area of anxiety about exams. Third, the scientific experiences and motivation to learn science showed highly static correlation. Experiences both from inside and outside of the school were significantly correlated to the motivation to learn science, and those from outside of the school had higher correlation with the motivation to learn science. Therefore, the scientific experiences should be recognized to play an important role for improvement of the level of motivation to learn science, and the efforts should be made to provide the elementary students with high-quality scientific experiences to develop their level of motivation to learn science.

This study was to evaluate the suitability of scientific questions as qualification examination for high school graduation by content validity and item response with three examinees and two preliminary examinees. As a result, scientific questions were concentrated on two units of six units of total, and application appeared to be lacking problem area by 8% compared to understanding and application. Examinees and preliminary examinees chose correct answers most by hap or guess, sometimes by experience or common sense, and the least by scientific concept. In addition, they could chose correct answers by hap or guess because there were words that implied the correct answer in questions and answers, or because they could compared and/or analyzed questions and answers. With these results, two proposals were suggested as follows; (1) scientific questions of qualification examination for high school graduation should measure basic scientific literacy. (2) specific criteria for science literacy in qualification examination for high school graduation should be set.
