  • Poly(3-(2-hydroxyethyl)thiophene) (P3HET) was synthesized using oxidative coupling polymerization that involved the protecting and deprotecting of hydroxyl groups but not the chlorine substitution or oxidative decomposition of the hydroxyl groups. The resulting P3HET exhibited good solubility in aprotic solvents, in contrast to the insoluble polymer product synthesized directly from the monomer, 3-(2-hydroxyethyl)thiophene (3HET). P3HET had low conductivity due to the strong hydrogen bonding of its hydroxyl groups. The ester-functionalized poly(3-(2-acetoxyethyl)thiophene) and poly(3-(4-pentylbenzoateethyl)thiophene) were also prepared with reasonably high molecular weights in order to examine how this functionalization modified the physical and chemical properties of P3HET. These polymers exhibited better solubility in common solvents and higher conductivity than P3HET. All these polymers exhibited bathochromic shifts of their film state absorption maxima with respect to those found in the UV-visible spectra of their solution phases. The extent of the bathochromic shift was found to vary with the lengths of the side chains of the ester-functionalized polymers.

  • PURPOSE. Veneering porcelain might be delaminated from underlying zirconia-based ceramics. The aim of this study was the evaluation of the effect of different surface treatments and type of zirconia (white or colored) on shear bond strength (SBS) of zirconia core and its veneering porcelain. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Eighty zirconia disks (40 white and 40 colored; 10 mm in diameter and 4 mm thick) were treated with three different mechanical surface conditioning methods (Sandblasting with $110{\mu}m$ $Al_2O_3$ particle, grinding, sandblasting and liner application). One group had received no treatment. These disks were veneered with 3 mm thick and 5 mm diameter Cercon Ceram Kiss porcelain and SBS test was conducted (cross-head speed = 1 mm/min). Two and one way ANOVA, Tukey's HSD Past hoc, and T- test were selected to analyzed the data (${\alpha}=0.05$). RESULTS. In this study, the factor of different types of zirconia ceramics (P=.462) had no significant effect on SBS, but the factors of different surface modification techniques (P=.005) and interaction effect (P=.018) had a significant effect on SBS. Within colored zirconia group, there were no significant differences in mean SBS among the four surface treatment subgroups (P=0.183). Within white zirconia group, "Ground group" exhibited a significantly lower SBS value than "as milled" or control (P=0.001) and liner (P=.05) groups. CONCLUSION. Type of zirconia did not have any effect on bond strength between zirconia core and veneer ceramic. Surface treatment had different effects on the SBS of the different zirconia types and grinding dramatically decreased the SBS of white zirconia- porcelain.

  • PURPOSE. In this study, the shear bond strengths (SBS) of luting cements to fixed superstructure metal surfaces under various seating forces were investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Seven different cements [Polycarboxylate (PCC), Glass-Ionomer (GIC), Zinc phospahate (ZPC), Self-adhesive resin (RXU), Resin (C&B), and Temporary cements ((RXT) and (TCS))] were bonded to a total number of 224 square blocks ($5{\times}5{\times}3mm$) made of one pure metal [Titanium (CP Ti) and two metal alloys [Gold-Platinum (Au-Pt) and Cobalt-Chrome (Co-Cr)] under 10 N and 50 N seating forces. SBS values were determined and data were analyzed with 3-way ANOVA. Pairwise comparisons and interactions among groups were analyzed with Tukey's simultaneous confidence intervals. RESULTS. Overall mean scores indicated that Co-Cr showed the highest SBS values ($1.96{\pm}0.4$) (P<.00), while Au-Pt showed the lowest among all metals tested ($1.57{\pm}0.4$) (P<.00). Except for PCC/CP Ti, RXU/CP Ti, and GIC/Au-Pt factor level combinations (P<.00), the cements tested under 10 N seating force showed no significantly higher SBS values when compared to the values of those tested under 50 N seating force (P>.05). The PCC cement showed the highest mean SBS score ($3.59{\pm}0.07$) among all cements tested (P<.00), while the resin-based temporary luting cement RXT showed the lowest ($0.39{\pm}0.07$) (P<.00). CONCLUSION. Polycarboxylate cement provides reliable bonding performance to metal surfaces. Resin-based temporary luting cements can be used when retrievability is needed. GIC is not suitable for permanent cementation of fixed dental prostheses consisting of CP Ti or Au-Pt substructures.

  • Optical disk drives read information by replacing a laser beam on the disk track. As information has become larger, the more accurate position control of a laser beam is necessary. In this paper, we report the analysis and fabrication of the micro mirror for optical disk drivers. The mirror was fabricated by using MEMS technology. Especially, the Process using the lapping and polishing step after the bonding of the mirror and electrode plates was employed for the process reliability. The mirror size was $2.5mm{\times}3mm$ and it needed about 35V for displacement of $3.2{\mu}m$.

  • We have demonstrated the production of thin films containing multilayer graphene-coated copper nanoparticles (MGCNs) by a commercial electrodeposition method. The MGCNs were produced by electrical wire explosion, an easily applied technique for creating hybrid metal nanoparticles. The nanoparticles had average diameters of 10-120 nm and quasi-spherical morphologies. We made a complex-electrodeposited copper thin film (CETF) with a thickness of $4.8{\mu}m$ by adding 300 ppm MGCNs to the electrolyte solution and performing electrodeposition. We measured the electric properties and performed corrosion testing of the CETF. Raman spectroscopy was used to measure the bonding characteristics and estimate the number of layers in the graphene films. The resistivity of the bare-electrodeposited copper thin film (BETF) was $2.092{\times}10^{-6}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$, and the resistivity of the CETF after the addition of 300 ppm MGCNs was decreased by 2% to ${\sim}2.049{\times}10^{-6}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$. The corrosion resistance of the BETF was $9.306{\Omega}$, while that of the CETF was increased to 20.04 Ω. Therefore, the CETF with MGCNs can be used in interconnection circuits for printed circuit boards or semiconductor devices on the basis of its low resistivity and high corrosion resistance.

  • The effect of ice-quenching after degassing on the hardness change during simulated porcelain firing in a metal-ceramic Pd-Au-Ag alloy was investigated by means of hardness test, field emission scanning electron microscopic observations, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The hardness decreased by ice-quenching after degassing, which was induced by the homogenization of the ice-quenched specimen. The decreased hardness by ice-quenching after degassing was recovered from the 1st opaque stage which was the first stage of the remaining firing process for bonding porcelain. The microstructural change showed that the increase in hardness during the remaining firing process was caused by precipitation. The ice-quenching after degassing did not affect the hardness change during the subsequent porcelain firing process.

  • Objectives: This study evaluated the effect of dentin pretreatment with silver nanoparticles (SNPs) and chlorhexidine (CHX) on the microshear bond strength (${\mu}SBS$) durability of different adhesives to dentin. Materials and Methods: Occlusal surfaces of 120 human molars were ground to expose flat dentin surfaces. The specimens were randomly assigned to six groups (n = 20). Three groups (A, B, and C) were bonded with Adper Single Bond 2 (SB) and the other groups (D, E, and F) were bonded with Clearfil SE Bond (SEB). Dentin was pretreated with CHX in groups B and E, and with SNPs in groups C and F. The specimens were restored with Z250 composite. Half of the bonded surfaces in each group underwent ${\mu}SBS$ testing after 24 hours and the other half was tested after 6 months of water storage. Results: SNP application was associated with a higher ${\mu}SBS$ than was observed in the CHX and control groups for SEB after 24 hours (p < 0.05). A significantly lower ${\mu}SBS$ was observed when no dentin pretreatment was applied compared to dentin pretreatment with CHX and SNPs for SB after 24 hours (p < 0.05). The ${\mu}SBS$ values of the 6-month specimens were significantly lower than those obtained from the 24-hour specimens for all groups (p < 0.05). This decrease was much more pronounced when both adhesives were used without any dentin pretreatment (p < 0.05). Conclusions: SNPs and CHX reduced the degradation of resin-dentin bonds over a 6-month period for both adhesive systems.

  • Recently, friction stir welding of dissimilar materials has become one of the biggest issues in lightweight and eco-friendly bonding technology. In this study, a lightweight torsion beam axle, which is an automobile chassis component, was used in the welding to cast aluminum material. The friction stir welding process of A357 cast aluminum and FB590 high-strength steel as well as the effects of the process parameters were investigated and optimized using a novel definitive screening design (DSD). ANOVA was used to predict the importance of the process parameters with 13 degradation experiments using the proposed DSD. Also, FSWed experiments were conducted using an optical microscope analysis to investigate the tensile strength behavior in the weld area. In addition to determining the interaction between the tool's rotational speed and the plunge speed, results indicate that the influence of the plunge depth was the most significant.

  • $TiO_2$ nanotubes fabricated in aqueous HF-based electrolytes have been generally grown only to about 500nm in length because of the strong dissolubility of HF acid. In this paper, ethylene glycol solution has been applied for increasing the length of the anodic $TiO_2$ nanotubes, and the growth behaviors of the nanotubes according to water contents has been investigated. Anodization of Ti in ethylene glycol + 1 wt% $NH_4F$ (EG solution) with water additions up to 10 wt% were carried out at the constant voltage of 20 V. The results show that a thin titanium oxide layer is formed in the initial stage and the nanotube structure grows underneath the initial layer. And the length of $TiO_2$ nanotubes decreases with the increasing water content in the solution. It can be ascribed to the locally acidified circumstance around the barrier layer inside the nanopore due to $H^+$ ion originated from water. The XPS for the nanotubes suggests that the spectra of Ti2p and O1s are the major chemical bonding states of the $TiO_2$, and those for F1s, N1s and C1s come from the compound of $(NH_4)_2TiF_6$.

  • A van der Waals material refers to a material having a two-dimensional layered structure composed of van der Waals bonds with weak interlayer bonding. The research based on heterojunction structures using such van der Waals two-dimensional materials has been steadily studied since the discovery of graphene. Herein, this paper reports a van der Waals heterojunction -based field-effect transistor device based on monolayer single crystalline MoSe2 grown by atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition. We found that MoSe2 grown under optimized process conditions did not have atomic-level defects and the transistor devices incorporating MoSe2 also showed excellent characteristics.
