  • Flowshop scheduling problem is known to be NP-complete. Since the optimization apporach like branch-and-bound is limited by exponentially growing computation time, many heuristic methods have been developed. Total tardiness is one of the criteria that the researchers have recently considered in flowshop scheduling. There, however, are few literatures which studied the general (m machine)-flowshop scheduling under the total tardiness criterion. In this paper, a heuristic scheduling method to minimize total tardiness at the (m machine, n job)-flowshop is presented. A heuristic value function is proposed to be used as a dispatching criterion in initial schedule generation. And the schedule improving procedure, by pairwise interchange of tardy job with the job right ahead of it, is introduced. Illustrative examles and simulated results are presented.

  • In this paper we study the no-wait or no-idle permutation flowshop scheduling problem with an increasing and decreasing series of dominating machines. The objective is to minimize one of the five regular performance criteria, namely, total weighted completion time, maximum lateness, maximum tardiness, number of tardy jobs and makespan. We establish that these five cases are solvable by presenting a polynomial-time solution algorithm for each case.

  • The WRR scheduling algorithm is widely used in ATM networks due to its simplicity and the low cost of hardware implementation. It guarantees minimum cell rate according to the weight of each queue. The fairness is a important factor for ABR service. That is, scheduling algorithm allocates network resources fairly to each VC. However, WRR algorithm shows worse performance on bursty traffic. Because it schedules input traffics according to predetermined weight, it can not satisfies fairness criteria, MCR plus equal share and Maximum of MCR or Max-Min share, defined by ATM Forum TM 4.1 specification. The Nabeshima et al algorithm is not adapt to network status rapidly because it is not compensate the weights of unused bandwidth to VCs and assign the unused bandwidth to VCs by RR method. In this paper, we propose a scheduling algorithm for satisfying the two fairness criteria, MCR plus equal share and Maximum of MCR or Max-Min share, among the six criteria defined by ATM Forum TM 4.1 specification. The WRR, Nabeshima et al, and the proposed scheduling algorithms are compared with respect to fairness and convergence time throughout experimental simulation. According to the simulation results, the proposed algorithm shows higher fairness and more rapid convergence than other algorithms.

  • The paper is devoted to some flow shop scheduling problems, where job processing times are defined by functions dependent on their positions in the schedule. An example is constructed to show that the classical Johnson's rule is not the optimal solution for two different models of the two-machine flow shop scheduling to minimize makespan. In order to solve the makespan minimization problem in the two-machine flow shop scheduling, we suggest Johnson's rule as a heuristic algorithm, for which the worst-case bound is calculated. We find polynomial time solutions to some special cases of the considered problems for the following optimization criteria: the weighted sum of completion times and maximum lateness. Some furthermore extensions of the problems are also shown.

  • High-level synthesis generates a structural design that implements the given behavior and satisfies design constraints for area, performance, power consumption, packaging, testing and other criteria. Thus, high-level synthesis generates that register-transfer(RT) level structure from algorithm level description. High-level synthesis consist of compiling, partitioning, scheduling. In this paper, we proposed the efficient scheduling algorithm that find the number of the functional unit and scheduling into the minimum control step with silicon area resource constrained.

  • This paper is concerned with scheduling in Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) using a Fuzzy Logic (FL) approach. Four fuzzy input variables: machine allocated processing time, machine priority, machine available time and transportation priority are defined. The job priority is the output fuzzy variable, showing the priority status of a job to be selected for the next operation on a machine. The model will first select the machines and then assign operations based on a multi-criteria scheduling scheme. System/machine utilization, minimizing mean flow time and balancing machine usage will be covered. Experimental and comparative tests indicate the superiority of this fuzzy based scheduling model over the existing approaches.

  • In this paper, we propose a computationally efficient scheduling algorithm that can arbitrarily control the throughput-fairness tradeoff in a multiuser wireless communication environment. As a new scheduling criterion, we combine linearly two well-known scheduling criteria such as one of achieving the maximum sum throughput and the other of achieving the maximum fairness, so as to control the relative proportion of the throughput and the fairness according to a control factor. For linear combining two different criteria, their optimization directivenesses and the units should be unified first. To meet these requirements, we choose an instantaneous channel capacity as a scheduling criterion for maximizing the sum throughput and the average serving throughput for maximizing the fairness. Through a unified linear combining of two optimization objectives with the control factor, it can provide various throughput-fairness tradeoffs according to the control factors. For further simplification, we exploit a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) approximation of the instantaneous channel capacity. Through computer simulations, we evaluate the throughput and fairness performances of the proposed algorithm according to the control factors, assuming an independent Rayleigh fading multiuser channel. We also evaluate the proposed algorithm employing the high SNR approximation. From simulation results, we could see that the proposed algorithm can control arbitrarily the throughput-fairness performance between the performance of the scheduler aiming to the maximum sum throughput and that of the scheduler aiming to the maximum fairness, finally, we see that the high SNR approximation can give a satisfactory performance in this situation.

  • This paper proposes a heuristic method for job shop scheduling with alternative machines. Our heuristic suggests four machine-selecting rules and two priority dispatching rules for modifying existent ones considering alternative machines, and then it extends existing nondelay/active job shop schedule generation. This heuristic provides good criteria(rules) in the selection of a proper machine among those performing a specific operation and for the dispatch of an operation to a selected machine and thus these rules permit the efficient job shop scheduling with alternative machines. The performances of our four machine-selecting rules in addition to the two priority dispatching rules, applied together with the existing 17 rules, are experimented and evaluated, respectively.

  • Since on-time delivery is becoming increasingly important in today's competitive markets, the development of effective scheduling methodologies to meet customer needs through on time delivery is of vital importance for the well-being of companies. The objective of this study is to develope a general heuristic algorithm for scheduling both the static and dynamic problems under certain on-time delivery criteria. For the problems with due-date related, we present insights for minimizing the number of tardy jobs and propose a heuristic scheduling algorithm. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm performs significantly better than other dispatching rules within reasonable computation time, specially in the environment of strong competition for resources.
