  • In fluorescence mode confocal scanning microscope, level of detected signal is very low. In object scanning type confocal scanning microscope, the additional optical system with objective lens and plane mirror was proposed to increase signal intensity, but there was none for beam scanning type confocal scanning microscope. We propose reflecting optical systems which improve signal intensity in beam scanning type confocal scanning microscope. We choose one of the proposed optical systems and design the optical system, i.e., select optical components and assign distances between the selected components. To design the optical system, we use finite ray tracing method and make cost function to be minimized.

  • To extend the application of digital technology to the replication of artifacts, meticulous details of the process and the diversity of three-dimensional (3D) printing output materials need to be supplemented. Thus, in this study, a bronze mirror with Hwangbichangcheon inscription was digitalized by 3D scanning, converted into a voxel model, and virtual conservation treatment was performed using a haptic device. Furthermore, the digital mold of the bronze mirror completed by Boolean modeling was printed using a 3D sand-printer. Such contactless replication based on digital technology reflects the stability, precision, expressivity, collectivity, durability, and economic feasibility of artifacts. Its application can be further extended to cultural products as well as such areas as education, exhibition, and research. It is expected to be in high demand for metal artifacts that require casting. If empirical studies through experimental research on casting are supplemented in the future, it could extend the application of digital technology-based contactless replication methods.

  • We report the laser scanning display as an emerging technology. We show demonstration system of laser TV, Video image is made by using a high speed MEMS scanning mirror and a direct-modulated red diode laser. We designed and fabricated MEMS scanning mirror. The first demonstration system showed a NTSC-resolution video image with the image size of 5 inches. The successful development of compact laser TV will open a new area of home application of the laser light.

  • Wafer scale micro mirror array with high surface quality for small form factor (SFF) optical pick-up was fabricated by micro UV-molding. To replicate micro mirror array for SFF optical pick-up, a high- precision mold was fabricated using micro-machining technology. Wafer scale micro mirror array was UV-molded using the mold and then the process was optimized experimentally. The surface flatness and roughness of UV-molded micro mirror array were measured by white light scanning interferomety system and analyzed the transcribing characteristics. Finally, the measured flatness of UV-molded micro mirror away for SFF optical pick-up, which was fabricated in the optimum processing condition, was less than 70nm.

  • In this paper, using $500\mum-thickness\; (100)\; silicon\; wafer,\; flat\; 65\mum-thickness$ silicon mirror plates were fabricated through dry etching and wet etching, and $45\mum-depth$ grooved driving electrodes were fabricated through UV-LIGA process. Four shapes of the driving electrode were fabricated: twenty four grooves of the $50\mum-width$, twelve grooves of the $100\mum-width$, six grooves of the $200\mum-width$, and no grooves on the driving electrode. Fabricated mirror plate size and spring size are $2400\times2400\times65\mum3\; and \;500\times10\times65\mum3,$ respectively. Mirror plate parts and driving electrodes were assembled into the scanning mirrors. Measured natural resonance frequencies were about 600Hz which have error within $\pm 2%$ to calculated value. Due to the squeeze effect in the narrow gap between the mirror plate and the driving electrode, measured resonance frequencies were reduced as raising the amplitude of the mirror plate. In a case of driving electrode without grooves, the resonance frequency was reduced largely, compared with a case of driving electrode with grooves. According to the experimental results, squeeze effect was smaller in the driving electrode with smaller-width and many grooves. Therefore, the driving electrode with smaller-width and many grooves was effective in low voltage and high speed operation.

  • In this study, micro mirror array for small form factor optical pick-up was replicated by micro UV-molding. First, mold for micro mirror array was fabricated using micromachining. Also, to analyze the characteristics of the surface quality, flatness of replicated mirror surface were measured by white light scanning inteferometry system. The results show that the micro mirror array with a sufficient surface quality can be obtained by polymer replication process.

  • In order to measure the retina thickness, the retina photographing system and the multi-channel high speed image data acquisition system is developed. This system requires the optical processing techniques and the high speed image processing techniques. The HeNe laser beam is projected the retina in artificial eye and then we sensed the reflected laser signal using APD array. The laser projection system on retina using optical instruments is implemented. In order to project the plane laser beam on retina, laser photographing system used the polygon mirror for horizontal scanning and the galvano mirror for vertical scanning. We acquired retina images in each channel of APD array, transferred computer using PCI interface the image data after real-time A/D converting.

  • A visual sensor consisted of polygonal mirror, laser, and CCD camera was proposed to measure the distance to the weld joint for recognizing the joint shape. To scan the laser beam of the sensor onto an object, 8-facet polygonal mirror was used as the rotating mirror. By locating the laser and the camera at axi-symmetrical positions around the mirror, the synchronized-scan condition could be satisfied even when the mirror was set to rotate through one direction continuously, which could remove the inertia effect of the conventional oscillating-mirror methods. The mathematical modelling of the proposed sensor with the optical triangulation method made it possible to derive the relation between the position of an image on the camera and the one of a laser light on the object. Through the geometrical simulation of the proposed sensor with the principal of reflection and virtual image, the optical path of a laser light could be predicted. The position and direction of the CCD camera were determined based on the Scheimpflug's condition to fit the focus of any image reflected from an object within the field of view. The results of modelling and simulation revealed that the proposed visual sensor could be used to recognize the weld joint and its vicinity located within the range of the field of view and the resolution.
