Line feature extraction in a noisy image

  • Finding line segments in an intensity image has been one of the most fundamental issues in computer vision. In complex scenes, it is hard to detect the locations of point features. Line features are more robust in providing greater positional accuracy. In this paper we present a robust "line features extraction" algorithm which extracts line feature in a single pass without using any assumptions and constraints. Our algorithm consists of five steps: (1) edge scanning, (2) edge normalization, (3) line-blob extraction, (4) line-feature computation, and (5) line linking. By using edge scanning, the computational complexity due to too many edge pixels is drastically reduced. Edge normalization improves the local quantization error induced from the gradient space partitioning and minimizes perturbations on edge orientation. We also analyze the effects of edge processing, and the least squares-based method and the principal axis-based method on the computation of line orientation. We show its efficiency with some real images.al images.

  • Linear motor is very rapidly substituted for rotary motor and ball screw for precision positioning applications because of its characteristics such as high speed, no backlash and simplicities. A precision positioning system which is composed of linear motion(LM) guide and linear motor is widely used since it has easy controllable property but this system has low accuracy problem caused by friction of the LM guide. In this study, a scanning type XY stage is manufactured and some experiments is performed to improve the accuracy of the stage.

  • In many industries, the accurate and quick checking of goods in storage is of great importance. Most today's inventory checking is based on bar code scanning, but the relative position between a bar code and an optical scanner should be maintained in close distance and proper angle for the successful scanning. This requirement makes it difficult to fully automate the inventory information/control systems. The use of RFID technology can be a solution for overcoming this problem. The mobile robot presented in this paper is equipped with an RFID tag scanning system, that automates the otherwise manual or semi-automatic inventory checking process. We designed the robot system in a quite practical approach, and the developed system is close to the commercialization stage. In our experiments, the robot could collect information of goods stacked on shelves autonomously without any failure and maintain corresponding database while it navigated predefined paths between the shelves using vision.

  • In this report, as the active position measurement system, a new method for two-dimensional position measurement system using a concept of semi-open type signal field has proposed. The feature of this system is realizing a position measurement only by scanning the encoded laser beams from scanning points to a measurement field, and observed it. First, both system configuration and encoding method are considered concretely, and M-sequence signal is selected for encoding. Next system design is performed to realize the theoretical measurement accuracy, and applied to a position measurement experiments.   • An application of Scanning Tunneling Microscopy(STM) is investigated for the measurement of 3-dimensional profiles of the macro-machined patterns of which critical dimensions lie in the range of submicrometers. Special emphasis of this investigation is given to extending the measuring ranges of STM upto the order of several micrometers while maintaining superb nanometer measuring resolution. This is accomplished by correcting hysteresis effects of piezoelectric actuators by using non-linear compensation models. Detailed aspects of design and control of a prototype measurement system are described with some actual measuring examples in which fine It patterns can successfully be traced with a resolution of 1 nanometer over a surface range of $4{\times}2$ micrometers.

  • An automated system for scanning and characterizing unbound aggregates, called the 'Laser-based Aggregate Scanning System'(LASS), has been developed at the University of Texas at Austin. The system uses a laser profiler to acquire and analyze true three-dimensional data on aggregate particles to measure various morphological properties. Tests have demonstrated that the system can rapidly and accurately measure grain size distribution and dimensional ratios, and can objectively quantify particle shape, angularity, and texture in a size invariant manner. In its present state of development, the LASS machine is a first-generation, laboratory testing device. With additional development, this technology is expected to provide high-quality, detailed information for laboratory and on-line quality control during aggregate production.

Binding Structures of Diatomic Molecules to Co-Porphyrins on Au(111) Studied by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

  • Axial bindings of diatomic molecules to metalloporphyrins involve in the dynamic processes of biological functions such as respiration, neurotransmission, and photosynthesis. The binding reactions are also useful in sensor applications and in control of molecular spins in metalloporphyrins for spintronic applications. Here, we present the binding structures of diatomic molecules to surface- supported Co-porphyrins studied using scanning tunneling microscopy. Upon gasexposure, three-lobed structures of Co-porphyrins transformed to bright ring shapes on Au(111), whereas H2-porphyrins of dark rings remained intact. The bright rings are explained by the structures of reaction complexes where a diatomic ligand, tilted away from the axis normal to the porphyrin plane, is under precession. Our results are consistent with previous bulk experiments using X-ray diffraction and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the optimal system(AAC device), which helps a person with a profound communication disorder to communicate with other people. Therefore, this system includes the user interface enhancement that is the user adaptation mode algorithm. The symbol is made with a text and an icon which is converted into Korean. The message contiol operates scanning and adjusts rate control of row-column scanning and linear scanning. This embedded system includes voice input/output and voice recording as well suggested method that could apply optimal device access algorithm from clinical environment. Therefore, we are experting that even the current system itself will be able to improve the life quality of people who need to communicate with the help of devices.

  • This report is the study for laser scanning. Scanning control of $CO_2$ laser, He-Ne laser, used for the treatment of body skin, has relatively low band about hundered Hz. It could be used as a substitiute for expensive galvanometer that is the established scan method, which operates the number of KHz movement by using step motor when it operates low speed. To increase the accuracy of step motor's the angle of rotation, We could materialize 100Hz low band by using open loop, closed loop method with microprocessor. This causes it to be stable even direction by attaching electric capacity sensor. Therefore, We could expect to reduce the cost by manufacturing low band scanner rather than costly feedback galvanometer.

  • Chromatic aberrations induced by Risley prisms made of a single material can be substantially compensated using a liquid crystal spatial light modulator while still keeping the prism pairs compact, simple and lightweight. A ${\pm}10^{\circ}$ optical scanning imaging system with ${\pm}2^{\circ}$instantaneous field based on LC-SLM correction is designed as an example. The ultimate simulation results show that this kind of scheme is an effective way of improving imaging performance dynamically across the full field of scanning.
