Recently, landslides frequently happen at a natural slope during period of intensive rainfall. With rapidly increasing population of steep terrain in Korea, landslides have become one of the most significant natural hazards. Thus, it is necessary to protect people from landslides and to minimize the damage of houses, roads and other facilities. To accomplish this goal, many landslide prediction methods have been developed in the world. In this study, a simple landslide prediction system that enables people to escape the endangered area is developed. The system is focused to debris flows which happen frequently during periods of intensive rainfall at steep slopes in Kangwondo. This system is based on the wireless sensor network that is composed of sensor nodes, gateway, and server system. Sensor nodes that are composed of sensing part and communication part are newly developed to detect sensitive ground movement. Sensing part is designed to measure tilt angle and acceleration accurately, and communication part is deployed with Bluetooth (IEEE 802.15. I) module to transmit the data to the gateway. To verify the feasibility of this landslide prediction system, a series of laboratory tests is performed at a small-scale earth slope supplying rainfall by artificial rainfall dropping device. It is found that sensing nodes installed at slope can detect the ground motion when the slope failure starts. It is expected that the landslide prediction system by wireless senor network can provide early warnings when landslides such as debris flow occurs, and can be applied to ubiquitous computing city (U-City) that is characterized by disaster free.
We investigated the causes and characteristics of a landslide at Hwangryeong Mountain, Busan, based on aerial photos, annual precipitation data, rock fracture patterns, and geomorphic features using GIS Software, and a statistical analysis of tilted trees. The analyzed slope shows evidence of a previous slope failure event and the possibility of future failures. Although the NW-SE trending slope was relatively stable until 1975, a large-scale slope failure occurred between 1975 and 1985 due to complex factors, including favorably oriented geologic structures, human activity, and heavy rain. This indicates that a detailed study of geologic structures, slope stability, and rainfall characteristics is important for slope cuttings that could be a major factor and cause of urban landsliding events. The statistic analysis of tilted trees shows a slow progressive creeping type of mass wasting with rock falls oblique to the dip of the slope, with the slope having moved towards the west since 1985. A concentration of tree tilting has developed on the northwestern part of the slope, which could reach critical levels in the future. The analysis of deformed trees is a useful tool for understanding landslides and for predicting and preventing future landslide events.

The failures of the agricultural reservoirs that most have more than 50 years, have increased due to the abnormal weather and localized heavy rains. There are many studies on the prediction of damage from reservoir collapse, however, these referenced studies focused on evaluating reservoir collapse as single unit and applyed to one and two dimensional hydrodynamic model to identify the fluid flow. This study is to estimate failure probability of spillway, sliding, bearing capacity and overflowing targeting small and medium scale agricultural reservoirs. In addition, we calculate failure probability by complex mode. Moreover, we predict downstream flood damage by reservoir failure applying three dimensional hydrodynamic model. When the reservoir destroyed, the results are as follows; (1) the flow of fluid proceeds to same stream direction and to a lower slope by potential and kinetic energy; (2) The predicted damage in downstream is evaluated that damage due to building destruction is the highest.
Landslides triggered by the combination of heavy precipitation and anthropological disturbance in hilly areas cause severe damage to human lives, properties, and infrastructure constructions. A comprehensive investigation of the influencing factors and failure mechanisms of landslides are significant for disaster mitigation and prevention. This paper utilized the combination of detailed geological investigation, physical experimental testing as well as numerical modelling to determine the failure mechanism, and proposed a countermeasures of the Lantian landslide occurred on 2, July 2017. The results reveal that the Lantian landslide is a catastrophic reactivated slide which occurred in an active tectonic region in Southwest China. Because of the unique geological settings, the fully to highly weathered basalts in the study area with well-developed fractures favored the rainwater infiltration, which is the beneficial to slide reactivation. Engineering excavation and heavy precipitation are the main triggering factors to activate the slide motion. Two failure stages have been identified in the landslide. The first phase involves a shallow mass collapse originated at the upper slopes, which extends from the road to platform at rear part, which is triggered by excavation in the landslide region. Subjected to the following prolonged rainfall from 19 June to 2 July, 2017, the pore water pressure of the slope continually increased, and the groundwater table successively rise, resulting in a significant decrease of soil strength which leads to successive large-scale deep slide. Thereinto, the shallow collapse played a significant role in the formation of the deep slide. Based on the formation mechanisms of the landslide, detailed engineering mitigation measures, involving slope cutting, anchor cable frame, shotcrete and anchorage, retaining wall and intercepting ditch were suggested to reduce the future failure risk of the landslide.

To investigate the stability problem of irrigation-drainage channel excavation slope on soft ground, analyzed the behavior of the soft ground with excavation slope by the limit equilibrium method and the finite element method, and compared with field tests. The results of this study were summarized as follows; 1. When rapid drawdown the water level, the crack was occurred by the effect of the excess pore water pressure, and the pore water pressure was decreased slowly. 2. As the width of excavation was larger, the crack width was larger. And, excavated depth was deeper, the progressive failure was appeared. 3. When the soft ground excavation was small-scale, the minimum safety factor was more effected by cohesion(1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0) than excavated slope inclination(1:l, 1:1.5, 1:2). 4. As excavation was progressed, the settlement occurred on the top-slope due to plastic domain, and heaving was occurred at the bottom of excavation. 5. The maximum shear stress was appeared greatly as the base part of slope went down. Because of the increase of the maximum shear stress, tension area occurred and local failure possibility was increased. 6. As the excavation depth was increased, the maximum shear strain was appeared greatly at the base of slope and distribution pattern was concentrated beneath the middle of slope.
The performance criteria of rockfall protection fence and reliability index were investigated considering characteristic of rockfall energy occurred at 160 cut slopes in national highway. As a result of study on statistic of variables that decide rockfall energy using Monte-Carlo simulation, the degree of slope was normal distribution type, mass of rockfall and height of slope was lognormal distribution type. The rockfall energy follows lognormal distribution because of statistical characteristic of mass of rockfall. The reliability index of rockfall protection fence was 0.678 and the failure probability of was very high as 24.9%. Proposed performance criteria of rockfall protection fence considering the scale of domestic rockfall energy is maximum 500 kJ and the range of reliability index was from 1.028 to 1.956. the failure probability of rockfall protection fence was from 14.8 to 2.5 percent if applying the performance criteria using the reliability index.

In this study, the large scale test was performed to investigate the behavior of failure on the embankment and spillway transitional zone by overtopping. The pore water pressure, earth pressure, settlement and failure behaviors according to several reinforcing method were compared and analyzed. The pore water pressure showed a small change in the spillway transition zone and core, indicating that the riprap and geotextile efficiently reinforced the embankment, but non-reinforcement showed a largely change in pore water pressure. The earth pressure by riprap and geotextile at upstream slope and bottom core increased rapidly with the infiltration of the pore water by overtopping. And the earth pressure at crest showed a smally change due to effect of the inclined core. A settlement by riprap showed a small change and the geotextile decreased a rapidly due to failure of crest. The width of failure by riprap at intermediate stage (50 min) showed a largely due to sliding of crest. But, the width and depth of the seepage erosion after the intermediate overtopping period (100 min) were very small due to the effect of riprap than geotextile and non-reinforcement which delayed failure. It has the effect that protect reservoir embankment from erosion in the central part. The pore water pressure at the spillway transition zone due to overtopping increased a rapidly in the case of non-reinforcement, but the reinforced methods by geotextile and riprap showed a smally change. Therefore, the reinforced method by riprap and geotextile was a very effective method to protect permanently and the emergency an embankment due to overtopping, respectively.
This paper is the results of analysis for the causes and characteristics of landslide according to heavy rain occurred in west area of Gangwon province which is affected by typhoon such as Ewiniar and Bilis in 2006. West side of Gangwon province is topographically weak for the landslide and debris flow since it is covered by soil of weathered rock such as Gneiss and Granite. From the results of analysis for the rainfall characteristics, it was found that landslide occurrence is closely related to the accumulated rainfall amount less than 3 days. Furthermore, it was found that regional difference of occurrence frequency is effected by 1-hour maximum rainfall intensity. From the results of analysis for the landslide data of 860 locations occurred in west side, it was shown that failure mode was changed from transition slide to liquidity slide. Occurrence frequency was high at the slope angle of $20{\sim}30^{\circ}$ slope length of 11~20, and slope width of 6~10. Landslide of west side is the typical landslide of Gneiss and Granite and the type of small scale which has narrow slope width.

Most rockfall prevention net among the rockfall prevention equipment that is constructed in around the road is actuality lack of function by quantitative research insufficiency etc.. Most of rockfall prevention net are composed to setting needle, perpendicular and horizontal wire rope and wire net. Also, function of rockfall prevention net depend on setting needle and the wire net and perpendicular and horizontal wire rope are fixed by setting needle. when unreasonable load is offered setting needle, rockfall prevention net can lose the function and happen continuous falling off of rockfall prevention net. Because rockfall prevention net have a such structural defect, improvement had been required in reply. So in this paper, spot application of Rock Bolt & Net Connection method and falling rock support ability are estimated by numerical analysis. As a result, when Rock Bolt & Net Connection Method is applied to cutting slope, decreases of stress and displacement is examined than current rockfall prevention net.

Landslides, failure of slope stability by natural or artificial factors, occur loss of life and properties. Recently, statistical methods and field measurements are used to a study for prediction of landslide harzard area, but there are so many difficulties to find the occurence system because of its complexity. In this study, authors choose the model area where occured landslides to predict the landslide hazard. Authors made a database of ground height to compare the each topography by scale of 1 : 25,000, 1 : 10,000, 1 : 5,000 and 1 : 1,200. Authors predict to landslide hazard area by the weight of ground height data and slope angle data. Finally, authors could know the possibility of prediction to find the landslide hazard partly.
