  • This study analyzed the effect of the microstructure and alloying element on hydrogen-induced delayed fracture properties for the Energy Saving Wire (ESW) developed recently. Specimens were produced with a diameter 6.5mm post to the deformation (0, 10, 20 and 30%), followed by injecting the hydrogen. The experimental results by using GAS chromatography showed that the more hydrogen was emitted for high-carbon steel (0.45%C steel and 0.35%C steel) than low-carbon steel(0.2%C-Cr steel and 0.2%C-Cr-Mo steel). And, 0.45%C steel, 0.35%C steel and 0.2%C-Cr-Mo steel exhibited the crack for 30% deformed specimen. The hydrogen emitted was analyzed with the amount, the spheroidization, and the size of the carbides.

  • A new tower internal, which is called CSE, is presented. The CSE is composed of a nozzle perforated in its bottom along the entire periphery and equipped with a multi vane axial swirler at the inlet and hollow cylindrical separator at the outlet of the nozzle. According to the experimental work for obtaining the necessary hydraulic information of the CSE, which is used for preliminary design of a separation column, the CSE showed a stable operation over the wide rage of gas/liquid ratio. However, it caused large pressure drop due to the high gas velocity which should carry liquid droplets through the element. The high pressure drop may cause problems in energy recovery and the application of the CSE can be limited to the high pressure columns. Assuming that the tray efficiency of the CSE is the same with the existing separation columns, the results of the column design showed the size reduction of the column diameters by 30 to $40\%$ and investment cost saving, depending on operating conditions. The application of the CSE to separation column may also contribute to the de-bottlenecking the existing column.

  • This study suggested ways to control UML diagram and to make design of database and to retrieve diagram information by giving questions. The study classified elements of the diagram. For instance, class diagram was made of classes, and class was done of class name and attribute operator. The elements were transformed to be database table having basic key and foreign key information. The ways suggested had advantages of users' sharing of model information and reuse of the model. This study investigated cost saving, time saving and UML model construction by database. We had designed integrated and relation database that could save and manage UML diagram, and suggested retrieval. For instance, we classified class diagram into elements to make tables and kept relation of each element by using not only basic key of relation database but also foreign key information. We made database of modeling depending upon methods to give users convenience.

  • A metal flaperon of a supersonic aircraft including the ribs, and skins was re-designed with a graphite/epoxy composite material to evaluate the weight saving effect. MSC/NASTRAN was used for the finite element analysis. The safety of the composite structures were evaluated in terms of the failure index, section cut, buckling, bearing/bypass and durability and damage tolerance analysis. After the application of the composite material, total weight saving of 25.6 pounds was achieved.

  • In order to reduce energy consumption, secondary controlled system has been applied to many types of equipments. In lifting equipments or press machines using hydraulic cylinder, a hydraulic transformer is used as a control component instead of a valve for motion control and a component for recovering potential energy of load. The transformer is combination of a variable displacement pump/motor as a secondary controlled element and a fixed displacement pump/motor. Based on the nominal model derived from mathematical model, the feedback type two-degree-of-freedom controller is designed and implemented. From simulation results, the disturbances including nonlinear friction torque, leakage flow and load force can be compensated and good positioning accuracy is obtained. It show that the proposed controller is effective.

  • This paper describes the standardized finite element model for carbody structures of railway vehicle made of sandwich composites. Recently, sandwich composites were widely used to railway vehicle due to the improvement of energy efficiency, high specific stiffness and strength, weight reduction and space saving in korea. Therefore, structural integrity should be verified using finite element analysis prior to the manufacture of composite railway vehicle. The standardized finite element model for composite carbody structures was introduced through comparing the results of real structural test under vertical, compressive, twisting load and natural frequency test of various railway vehicles in this study. The results show that the quadratic shell element is suitable to model the reinforced metal frame used to improve the flexural stiffness of sandwich panel compared to beam element, and layered shell and solid element are recommended to model the skin and honeycomb core of sandwich panel compared to sandwich shell element. Also, the proposed standard finite element model has the merit of being applied to crashworthiness problem without modifications of finite element model.

  • As an alternative for conventional structures for tall buildings, a hybrid lateral load resisting structure has been designed, enabling the assembly of tall buildings directly from a truck. It consists of steel frames with discretely connected precast concrete infill panels provided with window openings. Besides the stiffening and strengthening effect of the infill panels on the frame structure, economical benefits may be derived from saving costs on materials and labour, and from reducing construction time. In order to develop design rules for this type of structure, the hybrid infilled frame has recently been subjected to experimental and numerical analyses. Ten full-scale tests were performed on one-storey, one-bay, 3 by 3 m infilled frame structures, having different window opening geometries. Subsequently, the response of the full-scale experiments was simulated with the finite element program DIANA. The finite element simulations were performed taking into account non-linear material characteristics and geometrical non-linearity. The experiments show that discretely connected precast concrete panels provided with a window opening, can significantly improve the performance of steel frames. A comparison between the full-scale experiments and simulations shows that the finite element models enable simulating the elastic and plastic behaviour of the hybrid infilled frame.

  • Magnesium alloys are expected to be widely used fur the parts of structural and electronic appliances due to their lightweight and EMI shielding characteristics. While the die casting has been mainly used to manufacture the parts from the magnesium alloys, the press forming is considered as an alternative to the die casting for saving the manufacturing cost and improving the structural strength of the magnesium alloy parts. However, the magnesium alloy has low formability at room temperature and therefore, in many cases, forming at elevated temperatures is necessary to obtain the required material flow without failure. In the present study, square cup deep drawing tests using the magnesium alloy AZ31 sheet were experimentally conducted at various elevated temperatures as well as room temperature, and the corresponding finite-element simulations, which calculated the damage evolution based on the Oyane's criterion, were conducted using the stress-strain relations from the tensile tests at various temperatures. The formability predictability by the finite-element analysis was investigated by comparing the predicted damage distributions over the deformed AZ31 sheet at elevated temperatures with the corresponding experimental deformations with failures.

  • Improvement of the enthalpy exchange element's energy efficiency is of current interest from anenergy-saving viewpoint. In this study, a LiCl-impregnated spacer was devised as a means to improve the performance of the enthalpy exchange element. Two samples were tested : one with and one without impregnated spacers of $338{\times}338{\times}380mm$ sizes with 2.0 mm channel spacing. The results showed that the temperature efficiencies of the two samples were approximately the same. The humidity efficiency, however, was strongly affected by the LiCl impregnation. The impregnated sample yielded a 9% higher humidity efficiency under cooling and the difference increased to 14% under aheating condition. It was anticipated that more moisture would beadsorbed on the LiCl-impregnated spacers, which was delivered to their roots and eventually to the air in neighboring channels. Separate moisture adsorption tests revealed that both the adsorption rate and the amount of the adsorbed moisture are higher for the LiCl-impregnated specimen.
