  • The failure of rock slopes were influenced by weathering, which causes change in the shear strength. The weathering is also directly related to slaking and swelling characteristics. In the paper, the core of diameter loom was obtained by digging on rock slope of Kong-ju in Korea and then EDX(Energy Dispersive X-ray spectrometer) analysis was carried out to verified element of chief rock-forming minerals. Uniaxial compression tests, slaking tests, and point load test are performed to study engineering characteristics of conglomerate and red shale. As a results of slaking test, slaking index of conglomerate indicate range of 85.11-99.58 and shale indicate 58.37-99.23. Therefore, it is recognized that the resistance of shale to weathering decreases in shallow depth and it greatly influences the strength of rock. The result of uniaxial compression test and Point load test show that the strength of sedimentary such as conglomerate and red shale has an influence on both weathering and saturation.

  • Conventional linear control schemes often fail to provide precise positioning of a control object under the influence of friction, deadzone, saturation, etc. This paper proposes a control scheme for a precise point-to-point positioning system, which behaves well even under the above influences. The proposed scheme is composed of a fuzzy-neural controller. The neural network is employed to improve the performance of the fuzzy logic. To illustrate the effectiveness of this scheme, experiments are carried out for the cases of a fuzzy controller, the proposed fuzzy-neural controller, and the results are compared with each other.

  • The relaxation and elimination characteristics of polarization-photoinduced dichroism have been investigated in amorphous chalcogenide thin films deposited having normal(0。) and obique (80。) vapor incident angles. The dark relaxation kinetics of dichroism from a saturation point(D\ulcorner\ulcorner) to a certain relaxation point(D\ulcorner\ulcorner) grew to be longer on subsequent cycles of switching on and off of the inducing light, and these decays are changed from simple exponential decay to stretched exponential decay. The dichroism induced by a long time(~3.3 hrs) exposure exhibited the characteristics of longer time maintenance and smaller decreasing rate, in contrast with that by a short time (~min) exposure. In addition, the dichroism was eliminated by the exposure of non-polarized He-Ne laser.

  • Conventional linear control fails to provide precise positioning of a control object under the influence of friction, deadzone, saturation, etc. This paper proposes a high-precision control scheme for a precise point-to-point positioning system, called an X-Y table, even under the same influences above. The proposed scheme is composed of a fuzzy precompensator and a PD controller. The fuzzy precompensator is employed to improve the performance of the PD controller. Its fuzzy rules are obtained from experimental evolutionary programming (EP), not from an expert. The effectiveness of the scheme is demonstrated by experiments on the X-Y table. with a positioning error of within 1$\mu\textrm{m}$.

  • In a room air conditioning cooling system, if the room-sensible-heat-factor as plotted on a Psychrometric Chart intersects the saturation curve below the apparatus leaving air dewpoint, reheat must be used to maintain the design room air conditions. However, if the design room humidity is permitted to be raised to some degree, the cooling system will not require reheat as a new room-sensible-heat-factor line is developed between the apparatus leaving air dew-Point and the adjusted design room air conddition point. The advantages to this are the cost of reheat equipment and operation can be avoided. The cycle of this system can be shown on a Psychrometric Chart to plot the design condition points.

  • This study was to evaluate sorption and biodegradation rate affecting the natural dissipation of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) in surface soil. To show the effect of sorption and biodegradation on the natural dissipation of 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA), trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE), three types of vial experiments were employed; (1) sterilized, (2) non-sterilized, (3) non-sterilized/substrate enriched. Also three moisture contents was applied to find the moisture effect in each vial; (1) wilting point (12%, w/w), (2) field capacity (29%, w/w), (3) saturation (48%, w/w). The results suggested that keeping the soil moisture content at field capacity was desirable for TCA and TCE natural dissipation in the vial study.

  • Functional stay-green is a beneficial trait that may increase grain yield through the sustained photosynthetic competence during monocarpic senescence in cereal crops. The temporal changes of photosynthesis and related characteristics throughout the grain filling period of a stay-green japonica rice "SNU-SG1" was compared in growth chamber conditions with three high-yielding cultivars(HYVs) and their $F_1$ hybrids with SNU-SG1. SNU-SG1 exhibited a typical characteristic of functional stay-green in terms of chlorophyll degradation and photosynthetic competence during grain filling. According to the photosynthesis-light response curve measured at 10 and 35 d after heading for the flag leaf, SNU-SG1 exhibited higher initial light conversion efficiency and thus higher gross photosynthetic rate at light saturation compared to HYVs. Light saturation point was not different among genotypes, ranging from 1000 to 1500 ${\mu}mol$ photon $m^{-2}s^{-1}$. Net photosynthetic rate at light saturation($P_{max}$) of the upper four leaves in SNU-SG1 was much higher and sustained longer throughout grain-filling than HYVs and $F_1$ hybrids. The sustained high photosynthetic competence of SNU-SG1 during grain filling was ascribed to the longer maintenance of high mesophyll conductance that resulted from not only high chlorophyll content and its delayed degradation but also the slow degeneration of photosystem II(PS II) as judged by chlorophyll fluorescence($F_v/F_m$) of flag leaves. $F_1$ hybrids showed slow degeneration of photosystem II similar to the male parent SNU-SG1 while chlorophyll degradation pattern close to female parents, thus exhibiting a little higher $P_{max}$ than female parents. These results suggest that SNU-SG1 has a typical functional stay-green trait that can be utilized for increasing rice yield potential through the improved dry matter production during grain filling.

  • In this paper, the magnetization characteristics and the stored energy of magnetically coupled superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL)s using single and double high-Tc superconducting (HTSC) elements were compared. To analyze the magnetization characteristics and the stored energy, the magnetizing current and the flux linkage, which were derived from the electrical equivalent circuit of the SFCL using single and double HTSC elements, were calculated from the voltages and the current measured in the short-circuit tests. Through the comparative analysis on the magnetization characteristics and the stored energy for SFCL using sing and double HTSC elements, the magnetically coupled SFCL using double HTSC elements was shown to be more effective than the SFCL using single HTSC element from the point of view of the magnetic saturation.

  • The behavior of continuous flow culture of Lartobacillus bulgricus was investigated by application of Monod's kinetic model. The parameters obtained from Monod's chemostat theory successfully predicted the behavior of the chemostat. Then, it was found that Monod's kinetics were applicable to the growth rate dependence on glucose concentration. Under steady-state condition, the maximum growth rate, saturation constant, and wash out were found to be 0.62/hr, 7.69 g/1, 0.51/hr of continuous culture. And the optimum condition for the highest cell production was 0.41/hr in dilution rate, and at that point the cell production rate was 0.178g/1 hr.

  • Panax Saponin A(PSA) , one of dammarane glycosides of Korean ginseng, was labeled with $^{3}H$ or $^{14}C$ by our Previously reported Procedures of organic synthesis. Tracer studies with $^{3}H$-PSA in wino yielded the following results: 1). Oral and intraperitoneal administration of $^{3}H$-PSA resulted in the rapid appearance and prolonged retention of $^{3}H$-PSA in all organs such as liver, brain, bone marrow and spleen of mice. 2). The amount pi cellular intake of $^{3}H$-PSA was shown to have a certain level of saturation ranging from 0.4mg to 0. 7mg Per 20gm body weight of mice. Administration of $^{3}H$-PSA within the dosage of the saturation point did net give urinary excretion of 3H-PSA. On the contrary, excessive administration of $^{3}H$-PSA resulted in rapid excretion of the substance in the urine of mice.
