  • This paper deals with actual optical data from rural as well as urban areas in a nationwide study captured with Fisheye cameras. Simultaneously data was collected (of the receiving power density) from the mobile communications satellite N-STAR. The visibility of the satellite is easily determined by checking the value of the pixels in the binarized fisheye image of its position. The process of determining the visible satellite is automatically performed. Based on the analyses of the field data measured in Japan, we are expecting HEOs (Highly inclined Elliptical Orbiters) that would reduce blockage in the extreme northern region of Wakkanai City well as in the most crowded urban area, in Tokyo Ginza. In case of HEOs operation, the elevation angle will improve from 37 with N-STAR GEO to 75 degrees. HEOs could replace 5G/Ka-band or support in rural areas where broadband circuit is not available. We are proposing combination operations with HEOs and 5G/Ka-band to solve blockage problems, because HEOs can keep line-of-sight propagation with high elevation angle for long duration. In such operations, the communications profile on the vehicle based on actual optical data will be very useful to predict blockages and to select/switch a suitable circuit.

  • In this study we evaluated the hydrological applicability of multi-satellite precipitation estimates. Three high-resolution global multi-satellite precipitation products, the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA), the Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP), and the Climate Precipitation Center (CPC) Morphing technique (CMORPH), were applied to the Coupled Routing and Excess Storage (CREST) model for the evaluation of their hydrological utility. The CREST model was calibrated from 2002 to 2005 and validated from 2006 to 2009 in the Chungju Dam watershed, including two years of warm-up periods (2002-2003 and 2006-2007). Areal-averaged precipitation time series of the multi-satellite data were compared with those of the ground records. The results indicate that the multi-satellite precipitation can reflect the seasonal variation of precipitation in the Chungju Dam watershed. However, TMPA overestimates the amount of annual and monthly precipitation while GSMaP and CMORPH underestimate the precipitation during the period from 2002 to 2009. These biases of multi-satellite precipitation products induce poor performances in hydrological simulation, although TMPA is better than both of GSMaP and CMORPH. Our results indicate that advanced rainfall algorithms may be required to improve its hydrological applicability in South Korea.

  • In this paper, we consider the frequency sharing feasibility of Fixed Satellite Service (FSS) with Microwave Landing System (MLS) allocated in the C-band. On the basis of characteristics of MLS and FSS suggested by ITU and safety standards of MLS by ICAO, three interference scenarios are built and numerical simulations are carried out for investigating the frequency sharing between the two systems. From the simulation results, we calculate the separation distance between MLS and FSS ground antennas, required for frequency sharing by employing standard protection limits regulating the interference to noise ratio (I/N) of the receiver.

  • Flood caused by Typhoon and severe rain during summer is the most destructive natural disasters in Korea. Almost every year flood has resulted in a big lost of national infrastructure and loss of civilian lives. It usually takes time and great efforts to estimate the flood-related damages. Government also has pursued proper standard and tool for using state-of-art technologies. High resolution satellite imagery is one of the most promising sources of ground truth information since it provides detailed and current ground information such as building, road, and bare ground. Once high resolution imagery is utilized, it can greatly reduce the amount of field work and cost for flood related damage assessment. The classification of high resolution image is pre-required step to be utilized for the damage assessment. The classified image combined with additional data such as DEM and DSM can help to estimate the flooded areas per each classified land use. This paper applied object-oriented classification scheme to interpret an image not based in a single pixel but in meaningful image objects and their mutual relations. When comparing it with other classification algorithms, object-oriented classification was very effective and accurate. In this paper, IKONOS image is used, but similar level of high resolution Korean KOMPSAT series can be investigated once they are available.

  • In this paper, a dual band microstrip antenna with similar radiation pattern for the satellite internet service is proposed. The proposed antenna has two Y-shaped slots on the microstrip patch that is fabricated on RO4003 substrate with a dielectric constant of 3.38 and a thickness of 0.508 mm, and operates in the 2 GHz and 5 GHz bands. The size of the antenna is $50\times47.5\times6.5\;mm^3$, and fed by coaxial cable. The measured bandwidths of the antenna are 2.398$\sim$2.507 GHz and 5.458$\sim$5.972 GHz for VSWR<2. The measured gains are 8.92 dBi and 7.74 dBi, respectively, for the lower and upper bands.

  • Myogenic satellite cells (MSCs) are adult stem cells that activate and differentiate into myotubes. These stem cells are multipotent as they transdifferentiate into adipocyte-like cells, nerve cells and osteocytes. The effects of steroid hormones ($E_2$ and testosterone) were studied as a further step toward understanding the mechanism of MSCs proliferation and differentiation. In this study, MSCs were grown continuously for 87 days, implying that there may be a group of MSCs that continue to proliferate rather than undergoing differentiation. Isolated MSCs were cultured in Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's Medium supplemented with adult male, female or castrated bovine serum to observe the effect of steroid hormones on MSC proliferation. Cell proliferation was the highest in cultures supplemented with male serum followed by female and castrated serum. The positive effect of male hormone on MSC proliferation was confirmed by the observation of testosterone-mediated increased proliferation of cells cultured in medium supplemented with castrated serum. Furthermore, steroid hormone treatment of MSCs increased lipid accumulation in myotubes. Oil-Red-O staining showed that 17${\beta}$-estradiol ($E_2$) treatment avidly increased lipid accumulation, followed by $E_2$+testosterone and testosterone alone. To our knowledge, this is the first report of lipid accumulation in myotubes due to steroids in the absence of an adipogenic environment, and the effect of steroid hormones on cell proliferation using different types of adult bovine serum, a natural hormonal system. In conclusion, we found that sex steroids affect MSCs proliferation and differentiation, and lipid accumulation in myotubes.

  • In this paper, we focus on the real-time detection method of a seismic ionospheric disturbance using Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signal. First, the monitor for the detection of the seismic ionospheric disturbance is studied based on the estimated ionospheric delay using the GNSS signals. And then, the threshold for the automatic detection is computed. Moreover, to discriminate the seismic ionospheric disturbance against the other ionospheric anomalies due to other error sources such as cycle slips, the signatures of the ionospheric perturbation caused by the seismic wave is investigated. Based on the observation, the detection strategy is proposed. Using GPS observations collected from the 47 permanent stations in South Korea and Japan, the proposed real-time detection method is evaluated.

  • Striping is a main factor for imaging spectroradiometer data, which is obtained by multi-sensor scanning on spacecraft. The reason causing stripes and the development of striping removal methods are simply described in this paper, particularly, the principle of Matching Empirical Distribution Functions is introduced in detail. By using this method, some experiments are done to destripe imaging spectrometer data of SZ-3. The result shows that the method of Matching Empirical Distribution Functions is available for destirping Imaging spectroradiometer data of SZ-3, and the quality of image is improved obviously. This will help to process the future similar instruments data.
