  • The Communication Ocean Meteorological Satellite (COMS) is a geostationary satellite being developed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute. Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) is one of the payloads embarked on the COMS satellite. It acquires ocean images around Korea in 8 visible spectral bands with a spatial resolution of about 500 m. The acquired data are used to provide forecasting and now casting of the ocean state. The GOCI operations are controlled by the satellite embedded software, i.e. on-board software. This paper introduces the GOCI payload of the COMS satellite and describes the control software for the GOCI.

  • A preliminary thermal analysis is performed for the optical payload system of a geostationary satellite. The optical payload considered in this paper is GOCI(Geostationary Ocean Color Imager) of COMS of Korea. The radiative and conductive thermal models are employed in order to predict thermal responses of the GOCI on the geostationary orbit. According to the results of this analysis are as follows: 1) the GOCI instrument thermal control is satisfactory to provide the temperatures for the GOCI performances, 2) the thermal control is defined and interfaces are validated, and 3) the entrance baffle temperature is found slightly out its specification, therefore further detailed analyses should be continued on this element.

  • LIST is the Lyman-$\alpha$ Imaging Solar Telescope, a project funded by the Korean government to fly on the second Korean Science and Technology research Satellite (STSat-2) due to launch in December 2005. The Principal Investigator is Dr. Minhwan Jang of Kyung-Hee University and of the Space Payload Research Center (SPARC), a consortium of Korean universities and institutions formed to develop scientific research projects in space. The purpose of the LIST project is to design, build, and operate an instrument on STSat-2 which will make images of the Sun from Earth orbit at the wavelength of the Hydrogen Lyman-a emission line at 121.6 nm. LIST has a simple design concept comprised of a small telescope to image the full disk of the Sun onto a CCD detector and a set of filters to isolate the 121.6 nm wavelength.

  • As a former level of MSC(Multi Spectral Camera) telescope of the KOMPSA T2satellite, the several performance tests of EOS(Electro Optical Subsystem) were performed in the EOS level. By these tests, not only the design requirement of payload can be verified but also the test result can be the important criterion to estimate the performance of payload in the launch and space orbit environment. The EOS Geometric Mapping test is to verify the accuracy of the alignment & assembly on the Subsystem of the MSC by measurement like these; LOS(Line of Sight), LOD(Line of Detector), Band to Band Registration, Optical Distortion and Reference Cube. This paper describes the test results and the analysis for the EOS Geometric Mapping.

  • KOMPSAT-2 will carry MSC(Multi-Spectral Camera) which provides 1m resolution panchromatic and 4m resolution multi-spectral images at the altitude of 685km sun-synchronous mission orbit. The mission operation of KOMSPAT-2 is to provide the earth observation using MSC with nadir pointing. KOMPSAT-2 will also have the capability of roll/pitch tilt maneuver using reaction wheel of satellite as required. In order to protect MSC from thermal distortion as well as direct sunlight, MSC shall be operated within the constraint of sun incidence angle. It is expected that the sunlight will not violate the constraint of sun incidence angle for normal mission operations without roll/pitch maneuver. However, during roll/pitch tilt operations, optical module of MSC may be damaged by the sunlight. This study analyzed sun incidence angle of payload using KOMPSAT-2 AOCS (Attitude and Orbit Control Subsystem) Design and Performance Analysis Soft ware for KOMPSAT-2 normal mission operations.

  • Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has been used for mapping the surface geomorphology of cloudy planets like Venus as well as the Earth. The cloud-free Mars is also going to be scanned by SAR in order to detect buried water channels and other features under the very shallow subsurface af the ground. According to the 'Mid and Long-term National Space Development Plan' of Korea, SAR satellites, in addition to the EO (Electro-Optical) satellites, are supposed to be developed in the frame of the KOMPSAT (Korean Multi-Purpose Satellite) program. Feasibility of utilizing a SAR payload on KOMPSAT platform has been studied by KARI in collaboration with Astrium U.K. The purpose of the ShR program is Scientific and Civil applications on the Earth. The study showed that KOMPSAT-2 platform can accommodate a small SAR like Astrium’s MicroSAR. In this paper, system aspects of the satellite design are presented, such as mission scenario, operation concept, and capabilities. The spacecraft design is also discussed and conclusion is followed.

  • In this study, the operations concept of STSAT-2 which will be launched by KSLV-1, the first Korean Space Launch Vehicle, from Naro is explained. The major tasks of STSAT-2 is acquiring Lyman-alpha images of Sun by LIST(Lyman-alpha Imaging Solar Telescope) payload and the exact position of the satellite by calculating distance between STSAT-2 and SLR ground stations using SLR(Satellite Laser Ranging) payload. Also spacecraft technology verification is performed.

  • The CCD (Charge coupled device) detector that is used to convert the light into electronic data is very important component in satellite camera. A Linear CCD Spectral detector shall be used in the MSC (Multi-Spectral Camera, to obtain data for high-resolution images) Payload. In this paper, the design concept of the CCD detector control module in the MSC CEU (Camera electronic unit) system which will be a payload on KOMPSAT is described in terms of H/W (clock speed and accuracy).
