  • Land-use or land-cover classification of satellite images is one of the important tasks in remote sensing application and many researchers have been tried to enhance classification accuracy. Previous studies show that the classification technique based on wavelet transform is more effective than that of traditional techniques based on original pixel values, especially in complicated imagery. Various wavelets can be used in wavelet transform. Wavelets are used as basis functions in representing other functions, like sinusoidal function in Fourier analysis. In these days, some basis functions such as Haar, Daubechies, Coiflets and Symlets are mainly used in 2D image processing. Selecting adequate wavelet is very important because different results could be obtained according to the type of basis function in classification. However, it is not easy to choose the basis function which is effective to improve classification accuracy. In this study, we computed the wavelet coefficients of satellite image using 10 different basis functions, and then classified test image. After evaluating classification results, we tried to ascertain which basis function is the most effective for image classification. We also tried to see if the optimum basis function is decided by energy parameter before classifying the image using all basis function. The energy parameter of signal is the sum of the squares of wavelet coefficients. The energy parameter is calculated by sub-bands after the wavelet decomposition and the energy parameter of each sub-band can be a favorable feature of texture. The decision of optimum basis function using energy parameter in the wavelet based image classification is expected to be helpful for saving time and improving classification accuracy effectively.

  • Recent improvements of satellite remote sensing sensors which are represented by hyperspectral imaging sensors and high spatial resolution sensors provide a large amount of data, typically several hundred megabytes per one scene. Moreover, increasing information exchange via internet and information super-highway requires the developments of more active service systems for processing and analysing of remote sensing data in order to provide value-added products. In this sense, an advanced satellite data processing system is being developed to achive high performance in computing speed and efficieney in processing a huge volume of data, and to make possible network computing and easy improving, upgrading and managing of systems. JAVA internet programming language provides several advantages for developing software such as object-oriented programming, multi-threading and robust memory managent. Using these features, a satellite data processing system named as GeoPixel has been developing using JAVA language. The GeoPixel adopted newly developed techniques including object-pipe connect method between each process and multi-threading structure. In other words, this system has characteristics such as independent operating platform and efficient data processing by handling a huge volume of remote sensing data with robustness. In the evaluation of data processing capability, the satisfactory results were shown in utilizing computer resources(CPU and Memory) and processing speeds.

  • At present, many ground stations all over the world are using NORAD orbit element data in order to track and communicate with Earth orbiting satellites. The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) observes thousands of Earth orbiting objects on daily basis and provides their orbital information via internet. The orbital data provided by NORAD, which is also called two line element (TLE) sets, allows ground stations to predict the time-varying positions of satellites accurately enough to communicate with the satellites. In order to complete the mission of a high resolution remote sensing satellite which requires very high positional determination and control accuracy, however, a mission control and tracking ground station is dedicated for the observation and positional determination of the satellite rather than using NORAD orbital sets. In the case of KITSAT-3, NORAD orbital elements are currently used for image acquisition planning and for the processing of acquired images due to the absence of a dedicated KITSAT-3 tracking ground system. In this paper, we tested and analyzed the accuracy of NORAD orbital elements and the appropriate prediction model to determine how accurately a satellite acquisites an image of the location of interest and how accurately a ground processing system can generate the catalog of the images.

  • To increase the utilization of the KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite(KOMPSAT) series imagery being developed pursuant to the national space development program, high quality images with enhanced locational accuracy should be created through standardized post-processing processes. In the present study, using the Value-Added Processing System(VAPS) constructed for the post-processing of KOMPSAT imagery, location correction experiments were conducted using KOMPSAT-2 and -3 imagery from domestic and overseas regions. First, 50 pieces from each of KOMPSAT-2 imagery were selected from South Korean and North Korean regions, and modeling was conducted using GCP Chips. According to the results, the Root Mean Square Errors(RMSE) for South Korea and North Korea were 1.59 pixels and 2.04 pixels, respectively, and the locational accuracy of ortho mosaic imagery using check points were 1.33m(RMSE) and 1.90m(RMSE), respectively. Meanwhile, in the case of overseas regions for which GCP could not be easily obtained, the improvement of locational accuracy could be identified through image corrections using Open Street Map(OSM). The VAPS and reference materials used in the present study are expected to be very useful in constructing a precise image DB for entire global regions.

  • A new registration method for IR image and EO image is proposed in this paper. IR sensor is applicable to many area because it absorbs thermal radiation energy unlike EO sensor does. However, IR sensor has difficulty to extract and match features due to low contrast compared to EO image. In order to register both images, we used modified SIFT(Scale Invariant Feature Transform) and block processing to increase feature distinctiveness. To remove outlier, we applied RANSAC(RANdom SAample Concensus) for each block. Finally, we unified matching features into single coordinate system and remove outlier again. We used 3~5um range IR image, and our experiment result showed good robustness in registration with IR image.

  • The aim of this paper is to describe the results of the study on the extreme-ultra-violet (EUV) solar telescope, which is designed to. a possible satellite mission. Since the EUV band can not be observed on the ground, the observation in EUV should be performed in space using a satellite or a rocket. Design of the Extreme-Ultra-Violet solar Telescope (BUVT) in this study is based on "Designing a small-sized engineering model of solar EUV telescope for a Korean satellite" (Han et al. 2001). Our EUVT design is satisfied with the requirements for a satellite in size and input voltage. The major goal of the study is to confirm if we can detect the specific wavelength (58.4nm to 62.9nm) with the EUVT. We describe re-designing of the EUVT to decrease a shelter ratio. Also we describe the technics in the optic system and the detector, which were used to manufacture the EUVT. We explain the detective program, which is to calculate the amount of the solar radiation, and the image data processing system.ng system.
