  • Bio-film module system was applied to the treated leachate water that priorly had been treated with biological nitrification process. The experiments were performed in the laboratory and treated leachate water treatment facility. Experimental results obtained from laboratory conditions and nitrogen removal efficiencies were averaged 90% for 1 hr.

  • The actual situation of the rural house already improved since 1970's by standard plan of rural house was surveyed, to find out residential problems and farmers'intention to the improvement, and to make some space composition. The floor space of a living room and sanitary and bath facilities be required of larger dimensions than present. Facilities of sanitary and bath should be stayed indoors. The using-much-room is necessary to washing · and dressing after farm working. The space composition of rural house be variously developed on the basis of farmers'characteristies.

  • Cockroaches are abundant in Nigeria and are seen to harbour an array of pathogens. Environmental and sanitary conditions associated with demographic/socio-economic settings of an area could contribute to the prevalence of disease pathogens in cockroaches. A total of 246 cockroaches (Periplaneta americana) in urban (Benin, n=91), semi-urban (Ekpoma, n=75) and rural (Emuhi, n=70) settings in Edo State, Nigeria were collected within and around households. The external body surfaces and alimentary canal of these cockroaches were screened for bacterial, fungal, and parasitological infections. Bacillus sp. and Escherichia coli were the most common bacteria in cockroaches. However, Enterococcus faecalis could not be isolated in cockroaches trapped from Ekpoma and Emuhi. Aspergillus niger was the most prevalent fungus in Benin and Ekpoma, while Mucor sp. was predominant in Emuhi. Parasitological investigations revealed the preponderance of Ascaris lumbricoides in Benin and Emuhi, while Trichuris trichura was the most predominant in Ekpoma. The prevalence and burden of infection in cockroaches is likely to be a reflection of the sanitary conditions of these areas. Also, cockroaches in these areas making incursions in homes may increase the risk of human infections with these disease agents.

Sanitary Chemical Conditions of Farmwaters in Choongcheongnam and Kangwon Province According to Spring and Summer (충청남도 및 강원도 목장지역 목장용수의 춘하절간 위생화학적 변화)

  • It is very important to investigate the sanitary chemical conditions of farmwaters used for cattle breeding in the dairy farms. For this purpose we examined pH, KMnO4 consumption, total hardness, chloride, sulfate, NH3-N, NO3-N, fluoride, lead, iron, manganese, cadmium, copper, zinc and chrome in the farmwaters sampled 2 times(spring and summer)in Choongcheongnam and Kangwon Province. The pH of farmwaters in Choongcheongnam and Kangwon Province was 6.49$\pm$0.09, 6.70$\pm$0.06, total hardness 90.21$\pm$7.07, 64.53$\pm$6.38 mg/ι, consumption of KMnO4 4.13$\pm$0.62, 4.34$\pm$0.26mg/ι, NO3-N 6.51$\pm$0.55, 3.61$\pm$0.58 mg/ι, chloride ion 20.51$\pm$1.99, 5.41$\pm$1.36 mg/ι and sulfate ion 6.61$\pm$1.02, 7.28$\pm$1.30 mg/ι, respectively. But NH3-N was scarcely detected. Fluoride, iron, lead, cadmium, zinc, manganese and chrome were not detected from the tested farmwaters. There was high significance between each other in total hardness, NO3-N, chloride ion and sulfate ion. There was regional and seasonal significance in only NO3-N but only regional significance in total hardness and chloride ion.

Knowledge and Attitude toward Restaurant-Related Sanitation of New Restaurateurs (일반음식점 신규영업주의 위생관리지식 및 위생행정에 대한 태도)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the sanitation affairs of general restaurants. The questionnaire survey on the attitude and knowledge toward sanitation, the attitude for sanitary administration and the sanitary education was conducted against new 600 restaurateurs who were educated from June 20 to July 11, 1996, at the administration hall's division of Kyungsangbook-do in charge of food industry that offered regular sanitary education to new restaurateurs annually. And the visit survey on sanitary practice was also conducted over 93 restaurateurs who obtained the commercial license for food service business. The findings from the survey were as follows; In regard to food sanitation, some 87.1 to 88.3% got the right knowledge about the reason and precaution of food poisoning, food's frozen or cold-storage, and the disposal of products after expiration of validity term. But it was about 20.8% to 50.0% who knew right about major precaution, storage temperature in refrigerator, fermented milk product's storage temperature and validity term. There was therefore a necessity for education in food sanitation. 38.2% of the subjects placed an emphasis on sanitary storage of foodstuffs as the most important thing in sanitary management. 33.8% emphasized cooking sanitation. The environmental sanitation was counted as the most important thing by 19.2%, and personal sanitation of worker was counted by 8.8%. There was differences in what they thought the most important thing was, according to the respondent's educational level and cooker. 86.6% replied it necessary to improve the sanitary level. The respondents who were younger or had better educational level emphasized more the need for it. Concerning health examination, 90.2% replied it necessary. 81.4% answered the reason was because there was a potentiality Quests might be infected with contagious disease. 78.5% pointed the need for sanitary education, but respondents with higher educational level less emphasized its needs. As the reason for poor sanitation, restaurateur's poor awareness about it was most frequently pointed out, by 46.9%. Cooking sanitation was most frequently counted, by 38.5%, as the first thing to be improved. As the most critical point in sanitary education, 34.5% indicated food's sanitary Quality control 30.9% mentioned sanitary treatment of kitchen facilities and peripheral environment, and 27.1% emphasized the summary of the general food sanitation. 77.7% answered to correct immediately in case of violating the Food Hygiene Law, and 12.0% replied to correct in the same case if they would get the order from public official or administrative action would be taken. Respondents with higher educational level answered more to correct immediately. What they wanted the government office to do toward sanitary improvement was a fund aid an facilities and management which was pointed out by 38.9%, a periodical sanitary education by 26.3% and a on-the-spot guidance of sanitary officials by 22.3%. In view of the food service business's sanitary practice, the rate of wearing a sanitary clothes was 32.9% in city and 35.0% in county. The rate of hand-washing without soap or non-washing at cooking was 73.9%, 85%, respectively. The rate of personnel sanitation was 34.2% in city and 50.0% in county. These things indicated the sanitation was not well practiced. To improve the poor sanitary conditions of the food service businesses, it is recommended to offer institutional backing and financial aid from administrative office, and encourage restaurateurs to take pride in their job. and conduct the sanitary education effectively by sanitary education institution.

  • The water treatment by ozone was performed to remove VOC and organic substances in the multistage ozone contactor. This paper is secondary paper about the theme of ozone treatment since the first paper (Kor. Sanitary J., 15, 1(2000)) publicized, it was compared experimental results with theoretical those which were derived from the mathematical model associated with chemical reactions and mass transfer. Basic designing factors were determined as an optimal conditions for the removal rate of VOCs as follows: ozone input concentration in the contactor was 2mg/L, ozone contact time was 7 min and number of contactor was three-layered.

Recovery Increase by Recycling Backwash Residuals in Microfiltration System

  • With the rise in membrane applications, residuals management has become a growing challenge for membrane system. The primary residuals of MF/UF (microfiltration/ultrafiltration) system results from the wastes generated during backwashing. Many regulatory agencies, utilities, and water process engineers are unfamiliar with the characteristics and methods for treatment and disposal of membrane residuals. Therefore, this study was performed to investigate the backwash residuals water quality from the pressurized system with and without pre-coagulation, and to suggest approaches for the backwash residuals treatment. Pressurized MF system was installed at Guui water intake pumping station and operated with raw water taken from the Han River. We compared performances with and without the recycling backwash residuals at flux conditions, 50 LMH and 90 LMH with and without pre-treatment (coagulation). Based on the results, recycling of backwash residuals in pressurized system with pre-coagulation showed applicability of backwash residuals managements. Moreover, the recovery rate also increased up to over 99%.

  • To be applied to a humid environment such as bathroom and kitchen, sealant should have good adhesion, tensile strength, etc., it also have the resistance to fungal contamination from the environment. It is important to select right material for sanitary sealing application in order to prevent premature discoloration and fungal activities. Especially for high humidity conditions, it is crucial to have longer mildew and fungal resistance. In this article, we intended to give guide lines for developing right sanitary sealing material and practical test method for evaluating anti-fungal performances reflecting Korean residential life style.

Biosorption and Desorption Characteristics of Heavy metal ion in Aqueous Solution by Chlorophyll (엽록체를 이용한 수중에서의 중금속 흡착 및 탈착 특성)

  • According to the fact that algae, which is usually used as a biosorbent, contains chlorophyll, we used the chlorophyll as an adsorbent. In this study, chlorophyll is immobilized by agar, which was made of platan, oak, ginkgo and pine. We investigated the removing capacity of biosorbents to toxic heavy metals (Pb, CU, Cd, Zn) in the single ion solution. Then the experimental parameters were pH, reaction time and concentration of heavy metal ions.The optimum conditions for the adsorption of heavy metals were as follows : pH range was 4~5, reaction time was 40mon, and the highest ratio of the removing rate was 50~70 ppm. The order of the amount of Pb, Cu and Cd removed was specified as oak > ginkgo > pine > platan in these conditions and as pine > ginkgo > oak > platan at Zn. Fro the results of the desorption experiments, we found that the heavy metal with the highest ratio of desorption in the single ion adsorbent was Cu.

Leaching Characteristics of Heavy Metals of Bottom Ash and Plating Sludge with Environmental Conditions in Landfill (매립지 환경조건을 고려한 소각재와 도금슬러지의 중금속 용출특성)

  • This study was to understand leaching characteristics with pH controlling agents and Temp. control, and investigate leaching characteristics with pH control from opening a leaching test to an end for reassessing leaching test of heavy metals with environmental conditions in landfill. Because leaching of heavy metals was increased in low pH, pH must control for leaching in existing leaching test. Generally, regulation time(6hr) of leaching was confirmed reasonablely, except for Cu in plating sludge. In pH controlling solution, there was nearly not difference between Acetic acid and HCl and if considering Cu, the former was appropriate. In a part of heavy metal, leaching rate was increased in high Temp., and normal Temp. in existing leaching test would be revaluated.
