The bearing capacity of a soil can be improved by conventional ground improvement techniques such as stabilization and compaction methods. Recently, the use of geotextiles in improving the bearing capacity of soils has become popular because of the availability of durable and strong geosynthetic materials. In this paper, through the laboratory model tests on sandy ground reinforced by geotextiles with the strip footing under plane strain condition, the effects of bearing capacity improvement on the sandy ground and its behaviour were investigated.

The evaluation of dredging works of pump dredger considering soil conditions is a main idea in calculating construction costs in non-cohesive soil layers. For using pump dredger, on effects of pump dredger equipment, some data of overseas code for pump dredger are different to those of results and a pump dredging capability table in the field of costs. In this study, considerations of sandy soils are described for application of construction works.

The George Massey immersed tunnel passes the Fraser River near Vancouver, Western Canada. In this paper, dynamic analysis of the tunnel on sandy soils was performed using an effective stress constitutive model called UBCSAND. This model is able to calculate pore pressure rise and resulting tunnel deformation due to cyclic loading. Centrifuge tests conducted at RPI are used to verify the model performance. Centrifuge tests consist of 3 models: Model 1 is designed for an original ground condition, Model 2 for a ground improvement by compaction method, Model 3 for a ground improvement by gravel drainage. The results of centrifuge Model 1 are presented and compared with predictions of UBCSAND model. This model well captured the results of centrifuge test and therefore can be used to predict dynamic behavior of similar tunnels or underground structures on sandy soils.
The soil deformation due to a pile penetration in sandy soils has been analysed in model pile penetration tests. To simulate the actual ground conditions, especially the in-situ stress levee the tests were performed in a calibration chamber where both the vertical and the horizontal stresses could be applied separately. The deformation was monitored via 5 earth pressure cells. The results, were compared with the theortical values based on the theory of cavity expansion.
Since behaviors of loose, dense, silty sands vary under seismic loading, understanding the liquefaction mechanism of sandy soils continues to be an important challenges of geotechnical earthquake engineering. In this study, 36 deformation controlled cyclic simple shear tests were performed and the liquefaction potential of the sands was investigated using three different relative densities (40, 55, 70%), four different effective stresses (25, 50, 100, 150 kPa) and three different shear strain amplitudes (2, 3.5, 5%) by using energy based approach. Experiments revealed the relationship between per unit volume dissipated energy with effective stress, relative density and shear strain. The dissipate energy per unit volume was much less affected by shear strain than effective stress and relative density. In other words, the dissipated energy is strongly dependent on relative density and effective stress. These results show that the dissipated energy per unit volume is very useful and may contain the non-uniform loading conditions of the earthquake spectrum. When multiple regression analysis is performed on experiment results, a relationship is proposed that gives liquefaction energy of sandy soils depending on relative density and effective stress parameters.
Soil-water characteristic curve, which is called soil retention curve, is required to explore water flows in unsaturated soils, relative permeability of water in multi-phase fluids flow, and change to stiffness and volume of soils. Thus, the understanding of soil-water characteristic curves of soils help us explore the behavior of soils inclduing fluids. Biopolymers are environmental-friendly materials, which can be completely degraded by microbes and have been believed not to affect the nature. Thus, various biopolymers such as deacetylated power, polyethylene oxide, xanthan gum, alginic acid sodium salt, and polyacrylic acid have been studies for the application to soil remediation, soil improvement, and enhanced oil recovery. PAA (polyacrylic acid) is one of biopolymers, which have shown a great effect in enhanced oil recovery as well as soil remediation because of the improvement of water-flood performance by mobility control. The study on soil-water characteristic curves of sandy soils containing PAA (polyacrylic acid) has been conducted through experimentations and theoretical models. The results show that both capillary entry pressure and residual water saturation dramatically increase according to the increased concentration of PAA (polyacrylic acid). Also, soil-water characteristic curves by theoretical models are quite well consistent with the results by experimental studies. Thus, soil-water characteristic curves of sandy soils containing biopolymers such as PAA (polyacrylic acid) can be estimated using fitting parameters for the theoretical model.

Retardation effect of heavy metals in soils caused by adsorption onto the surfaces of solids particles is well known phenomena. The adsorption of metal ions has been recognized more strong in clay mineral and organic matter contents rather than sands and gravels. In this study, we investigated the retardation effect in two sandy soils by conducting batch and column tests. The column tests were conducted to obtain the relationship between concentration and time known as breakthrough curve (BTC). We applied pulse type injection of ZnCl$_2$solution on the inlet boundary and monitored the effluent concentration at the exit boundary under steady state condition using EC-meter and ICP-AES. Batch test consisted of an equilibrium procedure for fine fractions collected from two sandy soils for various initial ZnCl$_2$concentrations, and analysis of Zn ions in equilibrated solution using ICP-AES. The results of column test showed that i) the peak concentration of Zn analyzed by ICP was far less than that detected by EC-meter for both soils and ii) travel times for peak concentration were more less identical for two different monitoring techniques. The first result can be explained by ion exchange between Zn and other cations initially present in the soil particles since ICP analysis showed a significant amount of Ca, Mg ions in the effluent. From the second result, we found that retardation effect was not present in these soils due to strong cation exchange capacity of Zn ion over other cations since we did not apply a solution containing more adsorptive cations such as Al. The result of batch test also showed high distribution coefficients (K$_{d}$) for two soils supporting the dominant ion exchange phenomena. Based on the retardation factor obtained from the Kd, we predicted the BTC using CDE model and compared with the BTC of Zn concentration obtained from ICP The predicted BTC, however, disagreed with the monitored in terms of travel time and magnitude of the peak concentrations. The only way to describe the prominent decrease of Zn ion was to introduce decay or sink coefficient in the CDE model to account for irreversible decrease of Zn ions in liquid phase.e.

This paper presents the modeling of geosynthetic-reinforced compacted soils and discusses the reinforcement effect arising from confining the dilatancy deformation of the soil by geosynthetics. A series of compressive shear tests for compacted sandy soil specimens wrapped by geosynthetics are carried out by quantitatively examining the geosynthetic-reinforcement effect, occurring from a confinement of the dilative deformation in compacted soils during shearing. In the test, the initial degree of compaction is changed for each series of sandy soil specimens so that each series has different degree of dilatancy characteristics. Herein, the axial forces working on the geosynthetics so as to prevent dilative deformation of compacted soils during shearing are measured. Furthermore, the elasto-plastic modeling of compacted soils and a rational determination procedure for input parameters needed in the elasto-plastic modeling are presented. And to describe the irreversible deformation characteristics of compacted soils during shearing, the subloading yielding surface (Hashiguchi (1989)) to the elasto-plastic modeling is introduced. Finally, the elasto-plastic finite element simulation is carried out and the geosynthetic-reinforcement effect is discussed.
The infiltration rates of the upland soils on hill side slope were investigated in situ using rainulator of which rainfall intensity was 100mm/hr. The soil moisture profile after the water infiltration was compared with that calculated from Youngs' equation. The results obtained are as follows: 1. Time required for infiltration rate to reach constant during rainfall was 15 to 25 min. The infiltration rate measured after 30 min was considered to be final infiltration rate. 2. The final infiltration rates of clay soils were lower than 10mm/hr., loamy soils 10 to 20., coarse loamy soils 20 to 30, and sandy soils higher than 30mm/hr., respectively. 3. The saturated hydraulic conductivity of the surface soil of Samgag sandy loam was 0.47mm/min., Songjeong clay loam0.16 mm/min., and Jeonnam silty clay loam 0.14mn/min., respectively. 4. The soil moisture profile calculated from Young's equation was in close agreement with measured in situ.
