To obtain the basic informations on the farm cultivation of Eleutherococcus senticosus Max., field survey of the native habitat in Mt. Deokyu such as weather, soils, vegetation and growth was carried out. The habitat of E. senticosus is situated at 127$^{\circ}$ 45'E, 35$^{\circ}$ 52' N in Mt. Deokyu where the elev-tion ranges from 1,050 to 1,300 meters above the sea level. Mean annual temperature forecasted around the habitat was 5.8$^{\circ}C$, mean maximum temperature in August, 24.6$^{\circ}C$ ; mean minimum temperature in January, -13.5$^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity during the growth periods, over 95%. To divide the area according to climatic conditions was classified cool temperature and humid rain forest zone. In another view, it belonged to deciduous broad-leaf forest zone and soil texture was sandy loam with dark brown gravels. Acidity and P$_2$O$_{5}$ content of soil represented pH 5.2~5.6 and 10ppm, respectively. The growth of E. senticosus was poor under the low light intensity(relative 20% of full sun-light) at the growing place of the habitat and the propagation was conducted by root sucker. The natural vegetation was consisted of big trees, 3 species; shrubs, 8 species and herbs, 4 species.
A field microplot(D 20cm, L 85cm) experiment filled with Bonryang sandy loam soil (Typic Udifluvents) was conducted to obtain quantitative information on the movement of applied nutrients under diffetent soil moisture regimes and ladino clover cultivation. Chloride moved rapidly with soil water. When soil moisture tension was maintained at loer than 0.2 bar most of the Cl appeared to move outside the microplot 4 month after the microplot installation. Regardless of soil moisture condition, Cl was not detected in the soil due to the fast movement of the Cl beyond the microplot after 5.5 months Although large amount of P and water were applied to the soil of high available P during the field experiment, movement of P was negligible and most of P remained in thc place where applied due to the low solubility of the fused and superphosphate. Phosphate in the soil extracted by Bray No.1 solution and taken up by plant increased with soil moisture. Under the condition of irrigation at 0.2 bar, plant took up 23% of the applied P, and 24% of the P was extracted by Bray NO.1 solution, while plant took up 14% and 13% of the P was turned out to be Bray No.1 P. at thc nonirrigated condition after final harvest.
A filed experiment was carried out to investigate the effects for growth, yield of red lopper (Saelona) and properties of soil by beer sewage sludge application to the sandy loam which fertility was common. The results obtained were summerized as follows. 1. Growth of red pepper in sludge plot was very poor by drought in early stage, but color of loaves was green and growth strength was better than nontreated plot after rainfall in last stage. There were no significant differencies between plant height, number of branch on main stem and stem height in sludge and standard plot. 2. Yield of matured red pepper per plant in NPK+, and PK+ sludge 1200kg, 2400kg and 4800kg/10a plot were less than those in standard plot respectively. 3. Ratio of dry weight of matured red pepper in NPK+, and PK+ sludge 1200kg, 2400kg and 4800kg/10a were high than those in standard plot appreciably. 4. Sewage sludge application (1200kg/10a. N=51kg) was available as nitrogen source of organic fertilizer considerably, but there were some growth inhibition by excess of amount applied. 5. Sewage sludge application decreased the pH of the soil and increased the content of organic matter and exchangeable babe in the soil appreciably.
Differences in fertilizer responses of Chinese cabbage to soil water status were investigated in a field experiment. The growth pattern, water use, nutrient uptake, apparent efficiency of fertilizer and yield were analyzed under the 4-different fertilizer levels (N-P-K rate, kg/10a: 0-0-0 Fo, 11.5-10-12.5 Fo.5, 23-30-25 F1.0, 34.5-30-37.5 F1.5 and under the 4-different soil water status levels (non irrigated plot Mo, -0.1 to -1.0 bars M1, -0.1 to -0.5 bars M2, -0.1 to -0.2 bars M3). The soil was Bonryang sandy loam in the experimental farm of the Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Suweon. The growth and yield responses to the fertilizer levels showed a large difference between F0 and F0.5 but little differences were recognized between F0.5, F1.0 and F1.5 when the soil water potentials at 20-cm soil depth were lower than -2.0 bar. Under the well irrigated soil conditions, M2, and M3, the growth and yield responses to the fertilizer levels were significantly increased and the nutrient requirements were increased as well. The total uptake of nutrients decreased as the fertilizer amounts increased when the soil water potentials were low, while the total uptake of nutrients increased when the soil water potentials were high. Therefore, in considering nutrient availability of the applied fertilizers, the soil water status should be taken into account.
Magnesium hydroxide, which recently registered as a Mg fertilizer, is greatly different from magnesium sulfate in its solubility and effect on soil pH. In this study, the effects of magnesium hydroxide and magnesium sulfate on growth of chinese cabbage were compared at the application rate of $300kg\;MgO\;ha^{-1}$ in a Gyeongsan clay loam soil. Although magnesium hydroxide was effective in increasing number of leaf and fresh weight, overall effects of magnesium hydroxide and magnesium sulfate on the growth of chinese cabbage were not significantly different ($p{\leq}0.05$). Comparing the two magnesium fertilizer treatments, magnesium content of chinese cabbage was relatively higher in the magnesium sulfate treatment in the early stage of growth, but it was higher in the magnesium hydroxide treatment at harvest. Contents of Ca, P, and K in chinese cabbage were relatively higher in the magnesium hydroxide treatment than those in magnesium sulfate treatment. But, the differences in nutrient uptakes by chinese cabbage between the treatments were not significant ($p{\leq}0.05$). Therefore, magnesium hydroxide is expected to be used with nearly the same effects on crops as magnesium sulfate at the same application rate of Mg. Soil pH in the treatment of magnesium sulfate was lower than that of control treatment, but magnesium hydroxide could increase pH. Magnesium hydroxide can be used preferentially in acid and/or sandy soils, where magnesium sulfate can induce further soil acidification and leaching loss of Mg is often a severe problem.
We developed a mathematical simulation model to portray the vertical distribution of soil water from the measured weather data and the known soil hydraulic properties, and then compared simulation results with the periodically measured soil water profiles obtained on Jungdong sandy loam to verify the model, In this model, we solved potential-based Richards' equation by the implicit finite difference method superimposed on the predictor-corrector scheme. We presumed that: soil hydraulic properties are homogeneous; soil water flows isothermally; hysteresis is not considered; no vapor flows; no heat transfers into the soil profiles; and water added to soil surface is distributed along the soil profile following partial displacement principle. The input data were broadly classified into two groups: (1) daily weather data such as rainfall, maximum and minimum air temperatures, relative humidity and solar radiation and (2) soil hydraulic data to approximate unsaturated hydraulic conductivity and water retention. Each hydraulic polynomial function approximated using the Chebyshev polynomial and least square difference technique in tandem showed a fairly good fit of the given set of data. Vertical distribution of soil water as approximations to the Richards' equation subject to changing surface and phreatic boundaries was solved numerically during 53 days with a comparatively large time increment, and this pattern agreed well with field neutron scattering data, except for the surface 0.1 m slab.
To identify the effects of straw mulching on soil physicochemical properties in reclaimed saline soil, field experiment was conducted for 3 years (2010~2012) in Saemangeum reclaimed land. Soil series of the experimental field was Munpo and soil texture was fine sandy loam. The experiment was conducted at a field with EC of $2.4dS\;m^{-1}$ (field I) and the other field with EC of $5.6dS\;m^{-1}$ (field II). Each experimental field was treated with rye straw incorporation, mulching with rye straw and control. In 2010 rye straw produced from other field was used for the experiment and in 2011~2012 rye straw cultivated at the same experimental field was used. After rye straw application, soybean was cultivated. After 3 years field experiment, by rye straw incorporation, soil salinity decreased from $2.4dS\;m^{-1}$ to $0.6dS\;m^{-1}$ at field I but increased from $5.6dS\;m^{-1}$ to $7.6dS\;m^{-1}$ at field II. By mulching with rye straw soil salinity decreased from $2.4dS\;m^{-1}$ to $0.5dS\;m^{-1}$ at field I and also decreased from $5.6dS\;m^{-1}$ to $0.5dS\;m^{-1}$ at field II. By rye straw incorporation and mulching soil organic matter increased from $2g\;kg^{-1}$ to $4g\;kg^{-1}$. At field I yields of soybean were similar between rye straw incorporation and mulching but at field II yield of soybean increased apparently by mulching with rye straw compared to rye straw incorporation and control.
In order to examine the factors affecting herbicidal injury of pepper, crop injury and growth response of 2 red pepper cultivars and 2 sweet pepper cultivars to napropamide and pendimethalin were evaluated under defferent conditions of soil texture, organic matter, soil temperature and seeding depth in the greenhouse. Growth response of 4 pepper cultivars was also examined by roos dipping to napropamide and pendimethalin. More inhibition of top leaf growth by root dipping to napropamide was occurred in red pepper cultivars than in sweet pepper cultivars. However, sweet pepper cultivars showed more severe inhibition of top leaf growth by root dipping to pendimethalin compared to red pepper cultivars. Crop injury due to napropamide and pendimethalin was more severe in sandy soil than in loam soil and this trend was more remarkably shown in sweet pepper cultivars. Crop injury due to napropamide and pendimethalin was reduced with the increase in organic matter especially in cv. Walgeykwan and cv. Orient al Pimento. As seeding depth of pepper cultivars became deeper, crop injury due to napropamide and pendimethalin was reduced in cv. Walgyekwan and cv. Oriental Pimento.
This experiment was conducted to find out the effects of lime materials application on reducing injury of simulated acid rain(SAR) in soybean grown in pot contained with sandy loam. Six treatments including control, slaked lime(SL), 1% and 2% lime water(LW) and composite treatments with SL+LW were applied. Slaked lime was applied to soil in pot before planting, and lime water was applied to leaves a day prior to the spray of SAR(pH 2.7) and normal rain(pH 6.0), and these were sprayed at 2-day intervals. Growth, yield and yield components, foliar injury rate, chrolophyll content and photosynthetic activity in leaves, content of mineral nutrients in plant and soil chemical properties were analyzed and investigated. These results obtained are summarized as follows : Seed yield of all lime treatment was reduced by SAR compared with control. But seed yield of all lime treatment was increased with treatment of lime material in soil and on leaves. After 15 and 45 times spray of SAR, all lime treatments were effective in injury reducing visible injury of leaves compared with none treatment. Chlorophyll content in leaves was highest in plants treated with slaked lime+ 1% lime water and photosynthetic activity was highest with treatment of slaked lime. Concentration of total nitrogen, phosphate, and sulfur in soybean plant were increased by the spray of SAR. Concentration of total nitrogen, potassium and calcium in soybean plant were increased with treatment of slaked lime into soil. By treatments of SAR, soil pH was decreased, and total nitrogen and sulfur concentration in soil were increased. However, available phosphate and exchangeable cations in soil such as calcium, magnesium and potassium were reduced. Soil pH, calcium and silicate concentration were increased with treatment of slaked lime into soil.

Radio-tracer experiments on the Sr-90 absorption by rice and soybean from a sandy-loam soil of pH 6.35 treated with 5.2 and 31.2Bq Sr-90 per g-soil were carried out through pot cultivations. Sr-90 absorption rates of both crops increased till the mature stage when the rates were about 1.0%. Concentrations in their whole tops, however, decreased or changed little as they grew. Sr-90 concentrations in plant parts of both crops increased with the increase of those in soil. Soil-to-plant transfer coefficients of Sr-90 for rice and soybean at mature stages ranged, on the dry weight basis, from 0.07(unpolished seed) to 3.67(lean and from 0.86(seed) to 9.26(leaf), respectively. Only the unpolished rice seed showed a significant difference in the coefficient with 0.17 in 5.2Bq treatment and 0.07 in 31.2Bq treatment. Sr-90 retention rates of the upper 15cm soil after crop harvests were about 80% Sr-90 absorptions had no effect on the plant growth and yield of the crops.
