  • Performance of single cell at solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system is largely affected by electrocatalytic and thermal properties of cathode. Samarium-based perovskite oxide material is recently recognized as promising cathode material for intermediate temperature-operating SOFC due to its high electrocatalytic property. Perovskite structured $Sm_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_{3-\delta}$ and its composite material, $Sm_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_{3-\delta}/Sm_{0.2}Ce_{0.8}O_{1.9}$ were investigated in terms of area specific resistance (ASR), thermal expansion coefficient (TEC), thermal cycling and long term performance. $Sm_{0.2}Ce_{0.8}O_{1.9}$ was used as electrolyte material. Electrochemical ac impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and dilatometer were used to measure the cathodic properties. Composite cathode ($Sm_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_{3-\delta}$: $Sm_{0.2}Ce_{0.8}O_{1.9}$ = 6:4) showed a good ASR of 0.13${\Omega}$ $cm^2$ at 650$^{\circ}C$ and its TEC value was 12.3${\times}$10-6/K at 600$^{\circ}C$ which is similar to the value of ceria-based electrolyte of 11.9${\times}$10-6/K. Performance of composite cathode was maintained with no degradation even after 13 times thermal cycle test.

  • A spectroelectrochemical method has been applied to investigate the electrochemical behaviors and identify the kinds of samarium ions dissolved in high temperature molten LiCl-KCl eutectic. An optically transparent electrode (OTE) fabricated with a tungsten gauze as a working electrode has been used to conduct cyclic voltammetry and potential step chronoabsorptometry. Based on the reversibility of the redox reaction of $Sm^{3+}/Sm^{2+}$, which was determined from the cyclic voltammograms, the formal potential and the diffusion coefficient were calculated to be -1.99 V vs. $Cl_2/Cl^-$ and $2.53{\times}10^{-6}cm^2{\cdot}s^{-1}$, respectively. From the chronoabsorptometry results at the applied potential of -1.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl (1wt%), the characteristic peaks of absorption for samarium ions were determined to be 408.08 nm for $Sm^{3+}$ and 545.62 nm for $Sm^{2+}$. Potential step chronoabsorptometry was conducted using the anodic and the cathodic peak potentials from the voltammograms. Absorbance analysis at 545.63 nm shows that the diffusion coefficient of $Sm^{3+}$ is $2.15{\times}10^{-6}cm^2{\cdot}s^{-1}$, which is comparable to the value determined by cyclic voltammetry at the same temperature.

  • The luminescent properties of $Eu^{3+}$ and $Sm^{3+}$ doped potassium tungstate phosphor are investigated. The $K_{4-3x}(WO_4)_2:Eu^{3+}\;_x,Sm^{3+}\;_y$ phosphor is produced by firing the mixed precursors, followed by re-firing with a flux. The re-firing process results in the defect-free surface and uniform growth of the particles. The strong absorption in the region of ultra violet light is observed due to the 4f-4f electron transitions of the $Eu^{3+}$ and $Sm^{3+}$ ions. The doping concentration of europium into potassium tungstate is relatively high, compared to other host materials. It is revealed that the crystal structure is a monoclinic with space group, C2/c. This crystal structure facilitated the $Eu^{3+}$ ions to be located with the Eu-Eu distance larger than 5 ${\AA}$ so that concentration quenching does not occur even at high doping concentration. The excitation spectrum could be adjusted by the introduction of the samarium. A small amount of the $Sm^{3+}$ ions that acts as a sensitizer increases the energy absorption peak around 405 nm.

  • The study was designed to establish quantitative method for assessing the marginal leakage of dental restorations. 18 Class V cavities with $45^{\circ}$ bevel joint were prepared and replicas of these teeth were made with polyethylene wax. and classified with three groups. First group was filled with Scotch bond and silux. Second group was filled with glass ionomer cement:scotchbond/silux. Third group was filled with Dentin-Adhesit/Heliosit. After finishing, all specimens were subjected manually to 100 thermal cycles at $0^{\circ}C$ and $100^{\circ}C$ Samarium nitrate solution, irradiated with flux of $6{\times}12^{12}$ neutrons/$cm^2$/sec for 11 hours, woled for 200 hours, counted with the HpGe detector and the tracer uptake was determined by comparison with a standard of samarium ($10{\mu}g$). The following results were obtained. 1) The group filled with glass ionomer cement base showed least marginal leakage. 2) The group filled with Dentin-Adhesit/Heliosit showed less marginal leakage than the group filled with scotchbond/silux.
