  • The objectives of this research were to study the effect of salt-shrinkage finishing of silk on shrinkage degree and dyeing property of cochineal, and to investigate the efficacy of obtained results for imparting surface design effect on silk fabric. Ultimately it was aimed to suggest a technical process for developing natural dyed silk products with diverse design. Premordanted silk fabric was treated with $Ca(NO_3)_2$ solution(gravity: 1.45) at $90^{\circ}C$ for 1 min, washed, dried for further evaluation. The shrinkage of salt-treated fabric was calculated. The effects of salt treatment on the dye uptake of cochineal and colorfastness were investigated. The degrees of shrinkage were 10% and 3% for warp and weft, respectively. The salt treatment resulted in improving dye uptake of cochineal slightly. In addition, it improved colorfastness to washing and light. On the basis of the results, a technical process composed of premordanting, salt treatment and natural dyeing was suggested and using the process, two examples of textile design were presented. It can be concluded to impart various three dimensional surface design effect on silk fabric by applying salt-shrinkage finishing with combination of natural dyeing and mordanting.

  • The phenomenon of the shrinkage of silk fibers induced by inorganic salts including LiBr, $Ca(NO_3){_2}$, and $CaCl_2$, has been studied up to the present as one of the finishing methods of silk. It is expected that the shrinkage phenomenon may greatly contribute to the realization of the high sensibility of silk fibers. Especially the shrinkage enables the expression of three-dimensional appearance of silk fabrics along with the improvements in dimensional stability, resilience in stretching, and comfort. Numerous theoretical studies on the contraction phenomenon by $Ca(NO_3){_2}$ have been conducted so far. These studies have focused mostly on the silk fibers. It is difficult to find studies on silk fabrics. The negative aspects of the finishing are such as strength drop, yellowish discoloration, and fiber damage. These should also be considered as well as the positive aspects. In this study, the phenomenon of salt shrinkage is diversely reviewed by applying $Ca(NO_3){_2}$ solution for the silk fabrics as objects. The changes in the air permeability, thickness, and color were investigated with focus on the shrinkage of the silk fabrics according to the changes in treatment conditions. Some findings from this study are as follows: Within short period of time at the initiation of salt shrinkage, the salt shrinkage proceeds effectively. In the case of concentration of 47.4%, or 46.3% of $Ca(NO_3){_2}$ solution, appropriate treatment time seems to be 20seconds, or $2{\sim}8$minutes, respectively. Excessive shrinkage is obtained when lower liquor ratio is adopted. As a result, the condition is acting extremely disadvantageously against the thickness and yellow discoloration aspects.

  • Consumer and property evaluation of wetsuit materials were conducted to obtain useful data for developing competitive products that meet consumer expectations and improving industrial competitiveness. Data were collected through online surveys of 213 domestic consumers who have experienced wearing wetsuit among marine leisure activities. Five types of commercial wet suit materials by brand and four types of commercial wet suit materials with the same quality by thickness were collected. Then, their physical properties, salt water resistance and thermal insulation rate were evaluated and compared. As a result, the most commonly used wetsuit material is 3 to 5 mm thick, and the basic jersey material is bonded on both sides. As a processing for imparting functionality, processing for improving warmth and reducing surface resistance are most frequently used. Consumers often feel uncomfortable when wearing a wetsuit, such as wearing comfort, weight, ease of movement, stretchability, and clothing pressure, which are different from those of casual wear. Also, mechanical strength and warmth were considered to be the most important criteria for selection of wetsuit material for purchase or rental. The mechanical properties of brand A and B were better than those of brand C, D, and E. Resilience and thermal shrinkage were better in brand C, D, and E. On the other hand, there was no significant difference in the physical properties due to the difference in thickness of the material at the same quality. Also, it was found that the thicker the material, the more stable it is in the heat. Brand A and B had superior salt water resistance than brand C, D, and E. In the thermal insulation test, brand A and B showed better insulation characteristics than brand C, D, and E, but the types of bonded fabric and surface finishing of materials were thought to have affected. In comparison of the thickness, the thicker the materials, the better the salt resistance and the thermal insulation.

  • In this study, we investigated for natural rubber foam to replace petrochemical-based neoprene foam. Experiments were conducted on vulcanization system and 2-step foaming process of natural rubber. The vulcanization system were EV(Efficient Vulcanization Cure), Semi-EV(Semi-Efficient Vulcanization Cure) and CV(Conventional Vulcanization Cure). In the 2-step foaming process, first molding temperature was 140℃, times were 15, 20, 25, and 30minutes, and the second molding temperature was 160℃, the times 5, 10, 15, and 20minutes. The cure and viscosity characterization were evaluated by oscillating disc rheometer (ODR) and mooney viscosmeter. Various mechanical characteristics, including hardness, tensile strength, elongation at the point of rupture, and tear strength, were quantified. Subsequently, an assessment of alterations in these mechanical attributes was conducted post-immersion in a NaCl solution. In addition degree of volume change was measured after immersing the NR foam in NaCl solution and the low-temperature permanent compression set was evaluated at 4℃. And expansion ratio and shrinkage ratio of NR foam were evaluated for 28 days. As a result the EV vulcanization system showed the least change in physical properties before and after salt water immersion, and the lowest shrinkage ratio for 28 days. In addition it was confirmed that the 2-step foaming optimum condition differed depending on the appropriate vulcanization condition.

  • Alkaline hydrolysis to improve the hand of PET/acetate union fabric was studied in relation to skin saponification and retarding effect of salts on the alkaline hydrolysis of cellulose acetate fiber, accelerating effect of salts on the alkaline hydrolysis of PET fiber, and changes of total hand value(T.H.V) of PET/acetate union fabric treated with alkali/salt solution. It was found that the rate of saponification of acetate was delayed by the addition of salts such as LiCl, NaCl and CH$_{3}$COONa into NaOH solution below 10 minutes. The rate of shrinkage of acetate fabric treated with 5g/l NaOH solution at 9$0^{\circ}C$ and 60 minutes showed 20 % but it was decreased 8% by. the addition of 120g/l Concentration of inorganic salts. We could know that the rate of alkaline hydrolysis of filament yarn treated with alkali solution at 9$0^{\circ}C$ and 60 minutes was delayed about 3 % using 2,000T/M of hard twist yarn, especially acetate filament treated with alkali solution at 9$0^{\circ}C$ and 10 minutes was delayed about 10%. T.H.V. of PET/acetate union fabric was increased from 2.77 to 3.04~3.18 by the addition of salts into alkali solution.
