The interrelation into nucleation and thermodynamic parameters of solutions has been established by plotting of various dependencies: the enthalpy of dissolution, solubility product and super-solubility on ionic salt radii and also the extent of deviation from an ideal Debye -Huckel model of electrolyte solution on solubility product. The possible methods of perfect crystal growth from aqueous solution have been found a priori by separating of known set of pair values of solubility and super-solubility into no less than six-nine characteristic and distinctive sub-sets.
In this study, a series of highly swelling hydrogels based on sodium alginate (NaAlg) and polymethacrylamide (PMAM) was prepared through free radical polymerization. The graft copolymerization reaction was performed in a homogeneous medium and in the presence of ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator and N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker. The crosslinked graft copolymer, alginate-graft-polymethacrylamide (Alg-gPMAM), was then partially hydrolyzed by NaOH solution to yield a hydrogel, hydrolyzed alginate-graft-polymethacrylamide (H-Alg-g-PMAM). During alkaline hydrolysis, the carboxamide groups of Alg-g-PMAM were converted into hydrophilic carboxylate anions. Either the Alg-g-PMAM or the H-Alg-g-PMAM was characterized by FTIR spectroscopy. The effects of the grafting variables (i.e., concentration of MBA, MAM, and APS) and the alkaline hydrolysis conditions (i.e., NaOH concentration, hydrolysis time, and temperature) were optimized systematically to achieve a hydrogel having the maximum swelling capacity. Measurements of the absorbency in various aqueous salt solutions indicated that the swelling capacity decreased upon increasing the ionic strength of the swelling medium. This behavior could be attributed to a charge screening effect for monovalent cations, as well as ionic cross-linking for multivalent cations. Because of the high swelling capacity in salt solutions, however, the hydrogels might be considered as anti-salt superabsorbents. The swelling behavior of the superabsorbing hydrogels was also measured in solutions having values of pH ranging from 1 to 13. Furthermore, the pH reversibility and on/off switching behavior, measured at pH 2.0 and 8.0, suggested that the synthesized hydrogels were excellent candidates for the controlled delivery of bioactive agents. Finally, we performed preliminary investigations of the swelling kinetics of the synthesized hydrogels at various particle sizes.

Changes of physicochemical properties of brined cucumber were investigated in the samples mixed cucumber and water at 1 : 1.2 ratio in various salt concentrations from 15 to 30%. As salt concentrations in brine solutions were increased, cucumber was getting constricted and decreased in the size of diameter. Salt concentrations of brined cucumber were reached an equilibrium after 30 days of brine storage. When cucumber was preserved at 30% salt concentration, pH was gradually decreased until 60 days of brine storage. When cucumber was preserved in 15% salt solution, the yellowness on the surface of cucumber peels was the most intense among the groups. Among the groups preserved by more than 20% of salt, no difference was observed in intensity of yellowness after 30 days of brine storage. The absorbances of isopropyl alcohol extracts at 410, 505, 607, and 665 nm were different from those of raw cucumbers. Regardless of salt concentration, the hardness of cucumber was increased as preservation was prolonged except the group preserved in 15% salt solution.
Crosslinked poly(glycerol-co-malate)s were synthesized from L-malic acid in Krebs cycle and glycerol. The synthesized polymer was identified by FT-IR spectroscopy. Swelling degrees of the copolymer hydrogels were increased with an increase in pH of the aqueous solution. Hydrolytic behaviors of the crosslinked copolymers were investigated in various pH buffer solutions at 37${\circ}C$. The Hydrolysis of the copolymers proceeded faster with increasing pH of the aqueous solution. Releasing behaviors of the model drug such as diclofenac monosodium salt were also measured in various pH aqueous solutions at 37${\circ}C$. The release concentration of diclofenac monosodium salt from the hydrogel systems was increased with increasing pH. These facts indicate that the unreacted carboxyl and hydroxyl groups in the copolymers are greatly affected by pH in the conditions.

The amino acid composition, protein quality, and protein functionality of protein solution extracted from three edible insect species were investigated. We used 0.02% ascorbic acid and 0.58 M saline solution to extract water-soluble and salt-soluble proteins from the three insect species. Extracted protein solutions of Tenebrio molitor (TM), Allomyrina dichotoma (AD), and Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis (PB) were divided into six groups, according to species and solubility: WTM, WAD, WPB (water-soluble), and STM, SAD, and SPB (salt-soluble). Defatted TM had the highest protein content, but its protein solubility was the lowest, for both water and saline solutions. Amino acid composition differed by edible insect species and buffer type; SPB had the highest protein quality, followed by WPB. PB had a higher pH than the other species. Color values also differed among species. SPB had abundant high molecular weight proteins, compared with other treatments; and also had the highest foaming capacity, foam stability, and emulsifying capacity. In conclusion, PB is a good source of functional protein compared with the other studied species. Additionally, protein extraction using saline solution is promising as a useful method for improving edible insect protein functionality.
Purpose To investigate the physico-chemical properties of CB-ph [2-benzoyloxycinnamaldehyde], an anticancer drug obtained from Cinnamomum cassia using methylenechloride. and its stability in various aqueous solutions. Results CB-ph was rarely soluble in water but soluble in methanol and very soluble in ether. Kinetic salt effect on degradation of CB-ph in buffer solutions at pH 4.0 and 6$0^{\circ}C$ showed a linear relationship having a positive slope that means reactions between hydronium ions and protonated substrates. Actin and myosin solutions and fresh ground pork were irradiated with the electron beam (e-beam) at a dose of 0, 1.5, 3.0, 5.0 and 10 kGy. The changes in SDS-PAGE pattern of 2 proteins and the salt-soluble proteins extracted from ground pork after e-beam irradiation were monitored. When the myosin solution was irradiated with e-beam, myosin was degraded completely. Complete myosin degradations were observed even with the lowest dose (1.5 kGy) of e-beam treatment. Actin was degraded with the irradiation, but to a less extent than myosin was. The degradation of actin increased as the e-beam treatment increased from 1.5 to 10.0 kGy. Among the salt-soluble proteins extracted from ground pork, myosin was degraded gradually when the e-beam dose increased from 1.5 up to 10.0 kGy. Similar gradual increase in the degradation of actin also occurred with the increase of irradiation. Increases of 2 low molecular weight compounds (<29 kDa) were observed when the irradiation dose increased from 1.5 to 10.0 kGy. These 2 molecules are thought to be the breakdown products produced from the degradation of major salt-soluble proteins, myosin and actin. The salt-soluble protein content of ground pork did not change with the e-beam irradiation.
In the framework of the European project SAMOSAFER, this numerical study focuses on some thermal aspects of the Emergency Draining Tank (EDT) located underneath the core of a Molten Salt Reactor. In case of an emergency, this tank passively receives the liquid fuel salt and is designed to ensure a subcritical state. An important requirement is that the fuel does not overheat to maintain the EDT Hastelloy container integrity. The present EDT is based upon a group of hexagonal cooling assemblies arranged in a hexagonal grid and cooled down thanks to conduction through the inert salt layer up to an air flow in charge of removing the heat. This numerical thermal study relies on a conjugated heat transfer analysis coupling a Finite Element solid thermal code (SYRTHES) and two instances of a Finite Volume CFD codes (Code_Saturne). Calculations on an initial design suggest that a simple center airpipe flow is likely to not sufficiently cool the device. Alternative solutions have been evaluated. Introduction of fins to enhance the heat transfer do not bring a noticeable improvement regarding maximum temperature reached. However, a solution in which the central pipe air flow is replaced by several cooling channels located closer to the fuel is investigated and suggests a better cooling.
Germination and seedling emergence of 40 barley cultivars and lines having been bred in Korea were studied under different water and salt stress conditions containing different sucrose and KC1 concentration in laboratory at Suweon. This study revealed that the barley cultivars and lines differed markedly in their emergence rate index(ERI), total stand(TS), coleoptile length, seedling height, top and root weight. Those characters of the most cultivars were progressively reduced as water and salt stress increased. Jogangbori, Dongbori 1, SB 77460 and SB 77415 were less sensitive to both stress and will be useful for breeding sources. ERI was highly correlated with TS, coleoptile length and seedling height. ERI and TS between two different solutions were correlated each other, and this study indicated that for screening the varieties or lines tolerant to water and salt stress, both ways were available and should be screened genetic materials with a good germination and emergence rate in I stress conditions.
Measurement of supersaturation is important in crystallization processes, because it is one of key factors to control crystal size distribution and shape determining product quality. A monitoring system of the supersaturation using a quartz crystal sensor is applied to the supersaturation measurement. From the variation of resonant frequency, the beginning of the formation of salt crystal on the sensor surface is detected while the sensor is directly cooled down. The degree of supersaturation is computed from the solubility difference at the temperatures of the salt solution and the sensor. The performance of the propsed system of the supersaturation measurement is examined by applying the system to the crystallization of three different salt solutions. The experimental outcome compared with eye observation result and photographic analysis indicates that the proposed system is effective and useful to determine the supersaturation in the crystallization process. In addition, the microscopic monitoring of the initial stage crystallization is available with the sensor system.
