To see if the Panax Ginseng has any influence upon the amount of water and food intake, an experiment was carried out using 30 male rats. The animals were divided equally into the ginseng and the saline groups. For 5 days, animals belonging to the ginseng group received every day 0.5 ml/100g body weight of ginseng extract (4 mg of ginseng alcohol extract in 1 ml of saline), while animals belonging to the saline group received the same amount of saline. After the last medication on the 5th day, each animal was accommodated in a cage which was provided with a food well and a water supplier made of glass tube bent $30^{\circ}$ at the tip. The amounts of water and food consumed in the daytime (from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and at night (from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. next morning) were measured for 2 days. The ginseng group tended to consume water and food slightly more than the saline group did. However, the difference between the 2 group was far from reaching significancy. The influence of Panax Ginseng upon water and food intake was not evident.
A study was planned to see if the Panax Ginseng has any influence upon the general activity of rats. Seventeen male rats (mean body weight: 204 g) was divided into a ginseng group (N=9) and a saline group (N=8). Once a day for 5 days they received subscutaneously 0. 5m1/100g body weight of ginseng extract solution (4 mg of ginseng alcohol extract in 1 ml of saline), and same amount of saline, respectively. For 20 days beginning from the 1st day of medication on, each rat received activity measurement by means of beam interruption method. Following results were obtained : 1. Activities at night (6 p.m. to 6 a.m. next morning) and in 24hours on the 10 th, 12th, and 13 th day were significantly increased in the ginseng group compared with activities of the saline group. 2. Summed total night and 24-hour activities observed for 15 days after termination of medication were also significantly augmented in the ginseng group compaired with those of the saline group, although no remarkable difference existed between the 2 groups with regard to the summed total daytime activity. It is inferred that the ginseng augments general activity of rats especically at night.
The effect of salinity on the nitrification efficiency of the nitrifier consortium was evaluated for the nitrification of saline wastewater. The nitrifier consortium, which was the activated sludge acclimated with ammonium as the only energy source, was used as the nitrifier for the salt acclimation. Airlift reactors for the nitrification of ammonia with increasing concentration in saline synthetic wastewater (35 g/I NaCD, and synthetic wastewater without salt as a control, were continuously operated with the nitrifier consortium for 43 days. The ammonia removal rate was about 23g ammonia-N/$m^3$/day in both the absence and presence of the salt. An accumulation of nitrite was observed in the saline nitrification reactor at an early period. However, the nitrite decreased to less than 1 mg/l after 39 days of operation. The salinity increased the acclimation time of the nitrifier consortium to obtain a stable marine nitrification system. However, the salt acclimated system showed the efficient removal of ammonia which was same as that without salt.
The aerobic heterotrophic bacteria in the histosphere associated with grasses (Gramineae, Caryphyllaceae, Crucifereae) and rice cultivars in saline and reclaimed saline paddy soils were varied with species and rice cultivars. The fraction of aerobic heterotrophic $N_2$-fixing bacteria to the total aerobic heterotrophic bacteria were averaged to eighteen percent in the histosphere of grasses and rice. Acetylene reducing activity of these bacteria were ranged from 1 to 24 n mole/tube/hr. Most of the bacteria strains were predominated of hydrogen utilizing bacteria. The majority of these bacteria were closed to Pseudomonas, Azospirillum, Klebsiella and Agrobacter.
The purpose of this study is to understand the high saline water phenomenon of Handong-ri area in the eastern coast of Jeju Island, were investigate the tidal effect of groundwater level, variation of electric conductivity and temperature, geological logging on the monitoring wells, chemical water quality, and ratios of oxygen istope of groundwater and seawater Results in investigating variation of interface zone of freshwater and saline water represented that the hyaloclastites formed at below groundwater table is developing toward the coast; this area consisted of stratum of good permeability. Hyaloclastites is presumed the main path of the high salinity water There are a lot of movement by the tide at upper layer. Salinity of lower layer spreads to upper up step in proportion to tidal energy. Because of hydrogeological characteristics, Interface zone of freshwater and saline water is made, High salinity of groundwater occur in east coastal area of Jeju Island. Therefore, I think that high saline groundwater phenomenon is natural condition by simple mixing.
In order to study the effects of bee venom herbal acupuncture on the neurotransmitters of the rat brain cortex, herbal acupuncture with the bee venom group and normal saline group was performed bilaterally on the point corresponding to LI 4 of the rat. The average optical density of the neurotransmitters from the cerebral cortex was analyzed 30 minutes after the herbal acupuncture with immunohistochemical methods. The results were as follows: 1. The density of NADPH-diaphorase in the bee venom group was increased significantly at the motor cortex, visual cortex, auditory cortex, cingulate cortex, retrosplenial cortex, and perirhinal cortex, compared to the normal saline group. 2. The average optical density of vasoactive intestinal peptide in the bee venom group had significant changes at the insular cortex, retrosplenial cortex, and perirhinal cortex, compared to the normal saline group. 3. The average optical density of neuropeptide-Y in the bee venom group increased significantly at the visual cortex and cingulate cortex, compared to the normal saline group.
In order to observe the factors affecting light utilization efficiency in the canopy of a rice crop grown in reclaimed saline areas in Korea, 22 varieties of rice were cultured at the average salt concentration of 6.05mmhos/cm $25^{\circ}C$, (0.39%) in saline soils and non-saline silty loam soils. The inhibition of tillering ability by salt damage at the maximum tillering stage was greater than to growth in height. A significant direct correlation was observed between both ratios and salt concentration with each variety. In the salty areas the length of the flag leaf of the maturing stage showed a positive correlation with the production of rough rice while other living leaf showed a negative correlation. LAI of maturing stage was less in the salty area than in the non-salty area, while the former showed higher ratio in net assimilation and translocation to head with greater RGR before and after the heading stage.
An in vitro experiment under laminar non-pulsatile blood flow and an acute canine ex vivo femoral A-V series shunt experiment were undertaken to investigate the effectiveness of saline perfusion through pores of porous tubes to prevent formation of mural thrombus. PS/SBR porous tubes were used for the in vitro experiment. Commercially obtained ePTFE porous tubes were etched by sodium naphthalenide, and the etched tubes were used for the ex vivo experiment. According to the results of the in vitro experiment, mural thrombus on the surface of the porous tribe could be prevented by the saline perfusion. Adhered blood cells decreased semi-logarithmically with increased perfusion rate (up to $0.022\;ml/min-cm^2$) of isotonic saline solution. According to results of the ex vivo experiment, mural thrombus decreased with increased perfusion rate (upto $0.060\;ml/min-cm^2$).
In northern China, abundant summer rainfall and a higher water table can weaken the soil due to salt heave, collapsibility, and increased moisture absorption, thus the chlorine saline soil (silty clay) needs to be stabilized prior to use in road embankments. To optimize chlorine saline soil stabilizing programs, unconfined compressive strength tests were conducted on soil treated with five different stabilizers before and after soaking, followed by field compaction test and unconfined compressive strength test on a trial road embankment. In situ testing were performed with the stabilized soils in an expressway embankment, and the results demonstrated that the stabilized soil with lime and SH agent (an organic stabilizer composed of modified polyvinyl alcohol and water) is suitable for road embankments. The appropriate addition ratio of stabilized soil is 10% lime and 0.9% SH agent. SH agent wrapped soil particles, filled soil pores, and generated a silk-like web to improve the moisture stability, strength, and stress-strain performance of stabilized soil.
