Power quality mitigation devices play an important role in lots of industrial segments. Although there were many devices available in the market, the selection of an appropriate device specially for voltage sags and interruptions mitigation has been a challenge in the utility and customer for several years. It usually depends on technical and economic characteristics of the device. Nevertheless, most mitigation method is selected by rule of thumb or empirical method. In this paper, the life cycle cost analysis for the probabilistic risk assesment of voltage sag mitigation method is performed using either the deterministic or probabilistic approach. The difference between a deterministic and a probabilistic cost analysis approach is illustrated with five different case studies. This paper not only provides a comparison of life cycle costing of various devices but it also indirectly shows the possible savings due to the mitigation of voltage sags in the form of a project balance chart.

The AC railway system is quite differing from the general electric power system because it is single- phase and intermittently heavy loads. Thus, inevitably power quality problems are occurred in the AC railway system, i.e. voltage regulation voltage sags, voltage imbalance, and harmonic distortion. Recently, the power quality of the AC railway system becoming a hot issue because it is affect the control and safety of high-speed traction. In addition it is also affect the power quality of the electric power system. In this paper, single-phase Unified Power Quality Conditioner(UPQS) for the AC railway system is proposed to compensate the voltage sags and harmonic distortion. The configurations and control schemes of the proposed single-phase UPQC are presented. The effectiveness of the proposed single-phase UPQC application is verified by the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation works. It can be shown that the application of UPQC in the AC railway system is very useful to compensate the voltage sags and harmonic distortion from the results of related simulation works.
Spatial cable systems can provide more transverse stiffness and torsional stiffness without sacrificing the vertical bearing capacity compared with conventional vertical cable systems, which is quite lucrative for long-span earth-anchored suspension bridges' development. Higher economy highlights the importance of refined form-finding analysis. Meanwhile, the internal connection between the lateral and vertical sags has not yet been specified. Given this, an analytic algorithm of form-finding for the earth-anchored suspension bridge with spatial cables is proposed in this paper. Through the geometric compatibility condition and mechanical equilibrium condition, the expressions for cable segment, the recurrence relationship between catenary parameters and control equations of spatial cable are established. Additionally, the nonlinear general reduced gradient method is introduced into fast and high-precision numerical analysis. Furthermore, the analytic expression of the lateral and vertical sags is deduced and discussed. This is very significant for the space design above the bridge deck and the optimization of the sag-to-span ratio in the preliminary design stage of the bridge. Finally, the proposed method is verified with the aid of two examples, one being an operational self-anchored suspension bridge (with spatial cables and a 260 m main span), and the other being an earth-anchored suspension bridge under design (with spatial cables and a 500 m main span). The necessity of an iterative calculation for hanger tensions on earth-anchored suspension bridges is confirmed. It is further concluded that the main cable and their connected hangers are in very close inclined planes.
The cascaded H-Bridge Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) is used for protecting high voltage and large capacity loads from voltage sags. The LC filter in the DVR is needed to eliminate switching ripples, which also provides an accurate tracking feature in a certain frequency range. Therefore, the parameter optimization of the LC filter is especially important. In this paper, the value range functions for the inductance and capacitance in LC filters are discussed. Then, parameter variations under different conditions of voltage sags and power factors are analyzed. In addition, an optimized design method is also proposed with the consideration of multiple impact factors. A detailed optimization procedure is presented, and its validity is demonstrated by simulation and experimental results. Both results show that the proposed method can improve the LC filter design for a cascaded H-Bridge DVR and enhance the performance of the whole system.
The high penetration level of inverter-based distributed generation (DG) power plants is challenging the low-voltage ride-through requirements, especially under unbalanced voltage sags. Recently, a flexible injection of both positive- (PS) and negative-sequence (NS) reactive currents has been suggested for the next generation of grid codes. This can enhance the ancillary services for voltage support at the point of common coupling (PCC). In light of this, considering distant grid faults that occur in a mainly inductive grid, this paper proposes a complete voltage support control scheme for the interface inverters of medium or high-rated DG power plants. The first contribution is the development of a reactive current reference generator combining PS and NS, with a feature to increase the PS voltage and simultaneously decrease the NS voltage, to mitigate voltage imbalance. The second contribution is the design of a voltage support control loop with two flexible PCC voltage set points, which can ensure continuous operation within the limits required in grid codes. In addition, a current saturation strategy is also considered for deep voltage sags to avoid overcurrent protection. Finally, simulation and experimental results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

Wavelet transform is a new method fro electric power quality analysis. Several types of mother wavelets are compared using voltage sag data. Investigations on the use of some mother wavelets, namely Daubechies, Symlets, Coiflets, Biorthogonal, are carried out. On the basis of extensive investigations, optimal mother wavelets for the detection of voltage sag are chosen. The recommended mother wavelet is 'Daubechies 4(db4)' wavelet. 'db4', the most commonly applied mother wavelet in the power quality analysis, can be used most properly in disturbance phenomena which occurs rapidly for a short time. This paper presents a discrete wavelet transform approach for determining the beginning time and end time of voltage sags. The technique is based on utilising the maximum value of d1(at scale 1) coefficients in multiresolution analysis(MRA) based on the discrete wavelet transform. The procedure is fully described, and the results are compared with other methods for determining voltage sag duration, such as the RMS voltage and STFT(Short-Time Fourier Transform) methods. As a result, the voltage sag detection using wavelet transform appears to be a reliable method for detecting and measuring voltage sags in power quality disturbance analysis.

Computers and automated manufacturing processes in industry are very susceptible to voltage sags and surges. The need for greater power reliability makes the end-users to use the uninterruptible power supply and other electronic power conditioning means to maintain the stable voltage. In this paper, a single-phase buck ac-ac converter for Custom Power Applications is presented. The presented converter uses IGBT's as switching module and maintains the stable voltage through PWM technology in spite of the input voltage sags and load rejections. In this paper, the operation characteristics of the power converter at steady state are illustrated using PSPICE simulations.

In recent years, both electric utilities and end users have expressed their deep concerns about the quality of electric power. Especially, voltage sag which is one of power quality disturbance is very serious power quality problem on the power system. Voltage sag is a decrease to between 0.1 and 0.9 pu in rms voltage magnitude on the power system for durations from 0.5 cycles to 1 minute. These voltage sags are usually caused by fault conditions, overloads, and starting of large motors. The wavelet transform has attracted considerable attention in the field of power quality analysis recently. It has proved to be a powerful tool to study those transients that have time-localized information. In this paper, different types of voltage sags are simulated by using EMTP. This paper proposes the effective technique for voltage sag detection using wavelet transform.

In this paper, we propose new unified methodologies of reliability and its cost evaluation in power distribution systems. The unified method means that the proposed reliability approaches consider both conventional evaluation factor, i.e. sustained interruptions and additional ones, i.e. momentary interruptions and voltage sags. Because the three voltage quality phenomena generally originate from the outages on distribution systems, the basic and additional reliability indices are summarized considering the fault clearing mechanism. The proposed unified method is divided into the reliability evaluation for calculating the reliability indices and reliability cost evaluation for assessing the damage of customer. The analytic and probabilistic methodologies are presented for each unified reliability and its cost evaluation. The time sequential Monte Carlo technique is used for the probabilistic method. The proposed DVL(Demand Varying Load) model is added to the reliability cost evaluation substituting the average load model. The proposed methods are tested using the modified RBTS(Roy Billinton Test System) form and historical reliability data of KEPCO(Korea Electric Power Corporation) system. The daily load profile of the each customer type in domestic are gathered for the DVL model. Through the case studies, it is verified that the proposed methods can be effectively applied to the distribution systems for more detail reliability assessment than conventional approaches.

Dynamic voltage restorer(DVR) is now more preferable enhancement than other power quality enhancement in industry to reduce the impact of voltage faults, especially voltage sags to sensitive loads. The main controllers for DVR consists of PLL(phase locked loop), compensation voltage calculator and voltage compensator. PLL detects the voltage faults and phase. Compensation voltage calculator calculates the reference voltage from the source voltage and phase. With calculated compensation voltage from PLL, voltage compensator restores the source voltage. If PLL detect ideal phase, compensation voltage calculator calculates ideal compensation voltage. Therefore, PLL for DVR is very important. This paper proposes the new method of PLL in DVR. First, the power circuit of DVR system is analyzed in order to compensate the voltage sags. Based on the analysis, new PLL for improving transient response of DVR is proposed. The proposed method uses band rejection filter(BRF) at q-axis in synchronous flame. In order to calculate compensation voltage in commercial instruments, the PQR theory is used. Proposed PLL method is demonstrated through simulation using Matlab-Simulink and experiment, and by checking load voltage, confirms operation of the DVR
