  • The incomplete penetration(IP) discontinuity in butt joint weld, which is detected during safety analysis of the steel bridge by nondestructive evaluation(NDE) method, is classified as unacceptable defect according to the NDE codes and standards. In fact, there are a little allowance in butt joint weld in the view point of design criterion, and also detected IP discontinuity should be classified and evaluated for the fatigue strength and residual life estimation. In this study, we performed fatigue test to evaluate the fatigue strength of high strength steel(SWS490A) containing IP discontinuities in various size, the results compared and classified according to the bridge construction standard specification which published by korea administration of construction and traffic. Experimental results could be used to evaluate and estimate the IP discontinuities considering different stress range in butt joint bridge weld during periodic safety inspection.

  • The Half-depth precast deck is a structural system that utilizes pre-cast panels pre-built at the factory as formwork at the construction stage and as a major structural member at the same time after completion. These systems have joints between segments, and the detail and performance of the joints are factors that have a very large impact on the quality, such as the constructability and durability of the bridge decks. In this study, strength performance evaluation was performed for improved joints using connecting rebar by experimental method. Static loading tests were conducted on the test specimen with improved joint, those with existing joint and those without joint. The test results of the specimens were compared to each other, and the flexural strength required by the design was compared. The flexural strength required in the design was presented by finite element analysis. It has been shown that the flexural strength of the specimens with joints were more than twice that required by the design. But the flexural strength of the specimen with existing joint was about 84% of that without joint. The flexural strength of the specimen with improved joints was a nearly similar degree of that compared to the specimen without joint. And a comparison of the moment-deflection relationship curves of the two specimens also shows a very similar flexural behavior. It is confirmed that improved joint has sufficient flexural strength. In addition to strength, the bridge decks require serviceability, such as deflection and cracking, and in particular, fatigue resistance due to repetitive live loads is an important performance factor. Therefore, further verification studies are required.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors affecting the perceptions of patient safety culture, safety care knowledge, and safety care activity among nurses at orthopedic hospitals. Methods: Data were collected during Feb. 16 and Feb. 26, 2017, from 195 nurses of 9 small to medium sized orthopedic hospitals. Questionnaires about patient safety culture, safety care knowledge and activity were used. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, $Scheff\acute{e}$ test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The safety care activity was positively correlated with perceptions of patient safety culture (r=.50, p<.001) and knowledge (r=.48, p<.001). Factors that had influence on the safety care activity were the patient safety culture (${\beta}=.30$, p<.001), age (${\beta}=.27$, p<.001), and knowledge of the safety activity (${\beta}=.21$, p=.004). The patient safety care activity was explained 36.6% by those factors. Conclusion: To enhance the patient safety care activity, it should be provided the environment and open communication for the perceptions of patient safety culture and the in service education program for safety care knowledge.

  • The main purpose of collecting and analyzing operating experience events is to look for insights to improve safety. The underlying assumption is the correlation and causality between events with different safety significances. The analysis of this assumption could be valuable to optimize operating experience feedback programs and to enhance safety. This paper analyses the correlation between events with different safety significances. Groups of events from six nuclear energy related databases are considered. The findings are that a correlation exists but with various levels and not as large or consistent as might be expected across different databases. These results might be the basis for further work to analysis causality, to find out how a similarity in causes influences the correlation, and finally to improve the operating experience program.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to explore the influences of sense of ethics and attitude toward patient safety in confidence in patient safety in nursing students. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted with 198 students who had clinical practices in two nursing schools. Sense of ethics, attitude and confidence about patient safety were measured by a questionnaire. Data were analyzed with SPSS/WIN 19.0 using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. Results: There were significant differences in satisfaction with nursing major by grade. There were significant positive correlations among sense of ethics, attitude toward patient safety, confidence in patient safety, view on patient's safety, and satisfaction with nursing major. Confidence in patient safety was associated with sense of ethics, attitude toward patient safety, and view on patient's safety, with 37.6% of the variance. Conclusion: The findings suggest that we need to develop curriculums for undergraduate students to improve their sense of ethics and patient safety. Further research is needed to examine educational needs on patient safety in nursing students.
