Study on the Course Stability of a Barge in Waves (파랑중 부선의 침로안정성에 관한 연구)

  • For a ship navigating in waves, added resistance, sway force and yaw moment due to waves differ from still water conditions, which affects the maneuverability of the ship. Therefore, it is important to estimate the sway force and yaw moment generated by waves. In this study, numerical simulations were carried out to calculate the hydrodynamic forces acting on a barge in still water and waves using CFD. Based on the results, the characteristics of course stability of a barge were investigated and analyzed. The hydrodynamic forces acting on the barge in waves were stronger than in still water, and it was confirmed that hydrodynamic forces become greater as wavelength becomes longer. In long wavelength regions, the (-) value of the yaw damping lever was larger than in still water. However, in short wavelength regions and when wavelength coincided with the length of the ship, values were smaller than in still water. In this region, it can be assumed that course stability improved. In other words, in long wavelength regions, the course stability of the barge was worse than in still water and short wavelength regions. Therefore, attention is required for safe navigation in long wavelength regions.

Study on Development of Remote Mental Health Care Program with VR for Seafarers

  • Seafarers play an important role in shipping and logistics. However, seafarers are relatively vulnerable to mental illness because they have to board ships for a considerable period of time and work in isolation. In particular, in the pandemic situation caused by COVID-19, the crew change is delayed due to the closure of many ports around the world, increasing the mental burden on seafarers. The mental health management of the crew is important because these mental problems can lead to major accidents of lives and ships. This paper identified the necessity of mental health management of seafarers through a survey and identified problems with the currently operated mental health management program and curriculum. Especially, this study proposed VR-based programs to help crews receive mentally counseling treatment in a timely manner and to reduce the mental burden on them by preventing sensitive personal information exposure. Through this, it is expected to contribute to the stable development of the logistics industry by establishing a safe seafarers working environment.

  • As the Internet usage with web browser is more increasing, the web-based malware which is distributed in websites is going to more serious problem than ever. The central type malicious website detection method based on crawling has the problem that the cost of detection is increasing geometrically if the crawling level is lowered more. In this paper, we proposed a security tool based on web browser which can detect the malicious web pages dynamically and support user's safe web browsing by stopping navigation to a certain malicious URL injected to those web pages. By applying these tools with many distributed web browser users, all those users get to participate in malicious website detection and feedback. As a result, we can detect the lower link level of websites distributed and dynamically.

  • An All-in-one LED lantern is a light device to determine the fairway of ships in operation. The current all-in-one LED lantern powered by solar energy is challenged by insufficient power capacity due to limited sun hours. This article presents an all-in-one 9-Nautical mile LED lantern driven by solar and wind power that is abundant maritime renewable energy. Furthermore, the remote smart monitoring system is developed. A smart control system capable of remote control of the lantern was implemented by using the LED lantern device and monitoring system as IoT. This technology that realtime condition monitoring and remote control are developed for safe ship navigation. We expect that maintaining the accuracy and consistency of LED lanterns prevents marine accidents and reduces social costs.

A Study on the Manoeuvrability of 1/42.0 Scaled KCS (1/42.0 KCS 모형선의 조종성능에 관한 연구)

  • The emergence of new concept ships, such as autonomous ships, has drawn much attention on the manoeuvrability of ships because of the safe navigation and operation of ships. Although the manoeuvrability of KRISO Container Ship(KCS) has been frequently reported, there have been few documents of representative manoeuvre cases conducted in various methods by one institute. This paper presents the manoeuvrability of the ship in 1/42.0 model scale by 3 methods: free running model tests, horizontal planar motion mechanism tests, and computational fluid dynamics analysis. KRISO reports KCS manoeuvre data: 35° turning circle tests and 20/20(10/10) zigzag manoeuvring tests. In addition, a simple formula for integrating and comparing manoeuvre indices, Manoeuvrability Comparing Simple Index(MCSI), is proposed.

  • Scientific and technological progress is also fundamental to the evolving merchant shipping industry, both in terms of the size and speed of modern ships and in the level of their technical capabilities. While the freight performance of ships is growing, the number of crew on board is steadily decreasing, as more work processes are being automated through the implementation of information technologies, including ship management systems. Although there have been repeated appeals from international maritime organizations to focus on building effective maritime security defenses against cyber attacks, the problems have remained unresolved. Owners of shipping companies do not disclose information about cyberattack attempts or incidents against them due to fear of commercial losses or consequences, such as loss of image, customer and insurance claims, and investigations by independent international organizations and government agencies. Issues of cybersecurity of control systems in the world today have gained importance, due to the fact that existing threats concern not only the security of technical means and devices, but also issues of environmental safety and safety of life at sea. The article examines the implementation of cyber risk management in the shipping industry, providing recommendations for the safe ship operation and its systems in order to improve vulnerability to external threats related to cyberattacks, and to ensure the safety and security of such a technical object as a seagoing ship.

  • Our society is rapidly changing, and there is a growing demand for various convenience services in our daily lives. Among these services, railway and subway stations require tailored wayfinding services to accommodate individuals with disabilities. Currently, signage and information desks are the primary means of navigation. However, individuals with disabilities often rely on assistance from others due to physical discomfort or cognitive impairments. In this paper, we propose a customized wayfinding system within railway stations to assist individuals with disabilities. This system aims to ensure safe and convenient mobility in complex indoor environments, including transfer facilities.

  • Individuals with visual impairments face numerous challenges in their daily lives, with navigating streets and public spaces being particularly daunting. The inability to identify safe crossing locations and assess the feasibility of crossing significantly restricts their mobility and independence. Globally, an estimated 285 million people suffer from visual impairment, with 39 million categorized as blind and 246 million as visually impaired, according to the World Health Organization. In Saudi Arabia alone, there are approximately 159 thousand blind individuals, as per unofficial statistics. The profound impact of visual impairments on daily activities underscores the urgent need for solutions to improve mobility and enhance safety. This study aims to address this pressing issue by leveraging computer vision and deep learning techniques to enhance object detection capabilities. Two models were trained to detect objects: one focused on street crossing obstacles, and the other aimed to search for objects. The first model was trained on a dataset comprising 5283 images of road obstacles and traffic signals, annotated to create a labeled dataset. Subsequently, it was trained using the YOLOv8 and YOLOv5 models, with YOLOv5 achieving a satisfactory accuracy of 84%. The second model was trained on the COCO dataset using YOLOv5, yielding an impressive accuracy of 94%. By improving object detection capabilities through advanced technology, this research seeks to empower individuals with visual impairments, enhancing their mobility, independence, and overall quality of life.

Robotic-assisted Total Hip Arthroplasty and Spinopelvic Parameters: A Review

  • Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is an effective treatment for osteoarthritis, and the popularity of the direct anterior approach has increased due to more rapid recovery and increased stability. Instability, commonly caused by component malposition, remains a significant concern. The dynamic relationship between the pelvis and lumbar spine, deemed spinopelvic motion, is considered an important factor in stability. Various parameters are used in evaluating spinopelvic motion. Understanding spinopelvic motion is critical, and executing a precise plan for positioning the implant can be difficult with manual instrumentation. Robotic and/or navigation systems have been developed in the effort to enhance THA outcomes and for implementing spinopelvic parameters. These systems can be classified into three categories: X-ray/fluoroscopy-based, imageless, and computed tomography (CT)-based. Each system has advantages and limitations. When using CT-based systems, preoperative CT scans are used to assist with preoperative planning and intraoperative execution, providing feedback on implant position and restoration of hip biomechanics within a functional safe zone developed according to each patient's specific spinopelvic parameters. Several studies have demonstrated the accuracy and reproducibility of robotic systems with regard to implant positioning and leg length discrepancy. Some studies have reported better radiographic and clinical outcomes with use of robotic-assisted THA. However, clinical outcomes comparable to those for manual THA have also been reported. Robotic systems offer advantages in terms of accuracy, precision, and potentially reduced rates of dislocation. Additional research, including conduct of randomized controlled trials, will be required in order to evaluate the long-term outcomes and cost-effectiveness of robotic-assisted THA.

Initial experience with Scepter Mini dual lumen balloon for embolization of cerebrovascular diseases

  • Objective: Endovascular treatment of cerebrovascular diseases is often challenging due to small caliber, tortuous distal vessels. Several devices and techniques have evolved to overcome these challenges. Recently, a low profile dual lumen microballoon catheter, specifically designed for distal navigation is employed for neurovascular procedures. Due to its recent advent, scarce data is available on clinical utility and safety of Scepter Mini. The aim of this case series is to report our initial experience with Scepter Mini in the management of various cerebrovascular diseases. Methods: All interventional neurovascular cases performed using Scepter Mini between January 2020 till April 2021 were included. Data regarding patient demographics, procedural details and complications was retrospectively collected from patient's electronic medical record and procedure reports. Results: Total twelve embolization procedures were performed in eleven patients, including six brain arteriovenous malformation, two dural arteriovenous fistula, one vein of Galen malformation and three hyper-vascular glomus tumor embolizations. All procedures were successfully performed with adequate penetration of the embolic agent. Complete embolization was performed in six procedures, while intended partial embolization was performed in the rest of procedures. Scepter Mini was solely used in ten procedures, however in the other two embolization procedures it was used as an additional conjunct tool to complete the intended embolization. No balloon related complication was observed in any procedure. Conclusions: Scepter Mini dual lumen microballoon catheter is safe and feasible for delivery of liquid embolic agents for cerebrovascular embolization procedures.
