  • Salmonella enterica serotype Choleraesuis causes swine paratyphoid, with clinical findings of enterocolitis and septicemia. However, the clinicopathological features of S. Choleraesuis infections in pigs have not been reported in Korea. We describe the pathological findings of two weaned pigs with S. Choleraesuis infections, presenting with diarrhea, cough, and sudden death. Pathological examination indicated severe necrotic colitis in pig 1 and septicemic lesions in pig 2. Multidrug-resistant S. Choleraesuis was isolated from the pigs' lungs and intestinal contents. Further research is required for the surveillance of S. Choleraesuis infections in pigs and the virulence estimation in the S. Choleraesuis isolates.

  • Although Behcet`s disease, characterized by oro-genital ulceration and ocular abnormalities, is rare and unfamiliar disease to thoracic surgeon, one must remember that it can cause serious complications on the vascular system such as thrombophlebitis, thrombotic obstuction and aneurysm. We report a case of multiple arterial aneurysms with Behcet`s disease. This 31 year-old female had five times surgical interventions during short period[19 months]. 6 aneurysms were developed in this case, 3 were spontaneous aneurysms, 2 were anastomotic aneurysms and 1 was false aneurysm due to arterial puncture.

  • Background: Parkinson's disease is the second most common degenerative brain disease after Alzheimer's disease. This study reviewed clinical practice of acupuncture and moxibustion treatment for Parkinson's disease to assess the future direction of these treatments. Methods: The literature search used 5 Korean Internet databases. The search terms were "Parkinson's disease." and "Parkinson (Korean)." 36 papers were selected: 27 case reports, 2 respropective studies, 3 uncontrolled clinical trials, 3 randomized controlled trial, 1 non-randomized controlled trial. Results: Filiform needles were used in most of studies. Pharmacopuncture, electro-acupuncture, and auricular acupuncture therapy were also used in combination with Filiform needles. 2. The most commonly used basic acupoints for Parkinson's disease was Saamchimbeop. The most commonly used form of pharmacopuncture involved Bee-venom. Conclusion: It is expected that treatment of Parkinson's disease with a variety of acupuncture and moxibustion therapies will continue to be studied, in addition to treatments that utilize existing Filiform needle treatments in clinical practice.

  • The paper describes a new instrument for early detection of Alzheimer's disease. A new instrument for early detection of Alzheimer's disease is constructed on both the questionnaire for the investigation of living environment, and the lists for the functional tests of the sense, the physiology, and the left and right brains. When the medical doctor has made a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, the demented patient does not recover the indication adding available treatments. Then, the indication of a patient only takes a turn for the worse. For the demented patient can be kept his/her life style, Alzheimer's disease can make an early detection using a new instrument before a diagnosis of the dementia. And the indication of a demented patient can be delayed by the available medical treatments.

  • Meniere's disease is a syndrome with characteristic three symptoms(tinnitus, hearing loss and vertigo). The main pathology is imer lymphdropy by various causes. Western therapy consists of a dietary treatment, medication and a operation. But in these days, Meniere's disease is almost incurable. So we experienced one case of Meniere's disease treated with oriental medical treatment as like acupuncture, herbal medication etc. 37 year-old female patient had a diagnosed Meniere's disease by western medical doctor and had been treated for one year. But there has not been effective. After oriental medical Ueatment, Meniere's disease was recoverd at the end of one month.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to help understand the life and illness-experiences of focusing on a positive lifestyle, patients with Parkinson's disease, Method: The present study adopted a ethno graphic methodology. The participants for this study were 4 men and 3 women, who were treated for Parkinson's disease. Data was collected by an interview and participant observations from August 2003 to September 2004. Tape-recorded interviews were transcribed after the interview and classified and described to realistic tale. Result: Patients with Parkinson's disease experienced the stage of retake-off pursuing positive life by overcoming the acceptance process of illness including the stage of recognition of change, the stage of disruption and the stage of acceptance. The factors of positive life of Patients with Parkinson's disease were their strong will and social support. Conclusion: This study may be used in future studies as an important resource to develop nursing intervention strategies and programs for patients with Parkinson's disease that can help the patients to achieve strong willingness and positive life in Korea.

  • In this study, we propose a novel remote health monitoring system to accurately predict Parkinson's disease severity using a signomial regression method. In order to characterize the Parkinson's disease severity, sixteen biomedical voice measurements associated with symptoms of the Parkinson's disease, are used to develop the telemonitoring model for early detection of the Parkinson's disease. The proposed approach could be utilized for not only prediction purposes, but also interpretation purposes in practice, providing an explicit description of the resulting function in the original input space. Compared to the accuracy performance with the existing methods, the proposed algorithm produces less error rate for predicting Parkinson's disease severity.

  • Sphingolipids are ubiquitous building blocks of eukaryotic cell membranes that function as signaling molecules for regulating a diverse range of cellular processes, including cell proliferation, growth, survival, immune-cell trafficking, vascular and epithelial integrity, and inflammation. Recently, several studies have highlighted the pivotal role of sphingolipids in neuroinflammatory regulation. Sphingolipids have multiple functions, including induction of the expression of various inflammatory mediators and regulation of neuroinflammation by directly effecting the cells of the central nervous system. Accumulating evidence points to sphingolipid engagement in neuroinflammatory disorders, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Abnormal sphingolipid alterations, which involves an increase in ceramide and a decrease in sphingosine kinase, are observed during neuroinflammatory disease. These trends are observed early during disease development, and thus highlight the potential of sphingolipids as a new therapeutic and diagnostic target for neuroinflammatory diseases.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to report the effect of oriental demonstration treatment for episodic vertigo of Meniere's disease. Meniere's Disease characterized by recurrent prostrating episodic vertigo, nausea, vomiting, sensory hearing loss, tinnitus, and a feeling of fullness in the ear associated with generalized dilation of the membranous labyrinth (endolymphatic hydrops). The cause of Meniere's disease is unknown, and the pathophysiology is poorly understood. Methods We experienced one case of Meniere's disease treated with Asian medical treatment, acupuncture and herbal medication. 64-year-old female patient was diagnosed with Meniere's disease by western medical doctor. Methods: Saam acupuncture Sojangjungkyuk applied to the patient. Results After treatment her episodic vertigo, nausea, vomiting and endolymphatic hydrops were decreased but the level of tinnitus it was not improved as much as other symptoms. Conclusions Saam Acupuncture of Asian medical treatment could be safe and effective.
