  • To examine the productivity, growth characteristics, and nutritive value of forage rye at the southern region of Korea, fourteen varieties of rye were sown at Nov. 13, 1992 at the plot of experiment farm of Crop Experiment Station, Mokpo Branch, and over winter survival rate, heading date, yield, yield components and nutritional values were measured. All the varieties used in this experiment showed 100% over winter survival rate at the sowing date of Nov. 13. Heading dates of all the varieties ranges from Apr. 25 to May 10, which seems to be early enough to get high yield. The varieties, Paldal-hod, and Danko introduced from Japan appear to be the most recommended ones in the southem region of Korea. They showed early heading date of Apr. 25, large plant height, greater number of leaves, high yield, low content of crude fiber and crude fat, high crude protein, NFE, and crude a5h.

  • This study was conducted in 1991 and 1992 to determine the effects of winter annual forage corps such as winter rye (Secale cereale L.), rape (Brassica napus subsp. oleifera L.), oats (Auena satiua L.), crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum L.), vetch (Vicia satiua L.) and Italian ryegrass (Lolim multiflorum Lam.) on subsequent growth, yield and quality of silage corn (Zea mays L.). The winter annual forage crops were seeded at the end of August and harvested in the fall and spring before corn planting. Corn-leaf numbers, plant heights and LA1 were generally reduced during early development when corn followed Italian ryegrass(P<0.05) and winter rye, but the silking date of corn was not affected by the winter annual forage crops. Corn dry matter and TDN yields were significantly reduced when corn followed Italian ryegrass and late maturing Kodiak winter rye. The yield reductions for corn following Italian ryegrass and Kodiak winter rye, relative to corn which did not follow the winter annual forage crops, were 49 and 19% respectively. but the corn yield was slightly improved by 2 and 3%, respectively. when corn followed crimson clover and vetch. No quality differences in corn stover were observed among the treatments except for the lowest ADF and NDF contents and the highest IVDMD where corn followed ltaliabn ryegrass.

  • A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of cattle compost application on the change of soil physical properties and their relationship to yield performance of selected main forage crops. Maize(CV. Suweon 19) and sorghum hybrids(CV. Pioneer 9'31) as a summer crops and winter rye were grown on newly reclaimed red yellow soils(Fine loamy, Typic Hapludults) under different application rate of cattle compost associated with chemical NPK fertilization, from Oct. 1986 to Sept. 1989. Experimental field was laid down as a split plots design with four replications. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Cattle compost application reclaimed soil physical propeties, such as formation of granular structure and water holding capacity, and it result in a great increase of plant growth and the rate of dry matter accumulation. 2. While cattle compost treatment reduced the portion of soild phase of the three phase constituents of soils, it increased the portion of air phase and liquid phase comparatively. 3. Organic matter, N, P, K, and mineral content in soil were markedly increased in the plot treated with compost. 4. Cattle compost application increased fodder production both in maize-rye and sorghum hybrids-rye cultivation. Annual dry matter yield of maize-rye cropping was 2183(NI'K only), 2425(NPK+compvst 3000 kg) and 2800kg/lOa(NPK + compost 6000kg/10a).

  • Triticale(Moniko, Presto, Tewo), wheat(Kitami 66, Tsukisarnul, chihoku) and rye(Almo, Warko, Mardar) were harvested in heading, milk, dough and ripe stage. Effects of various harvesting stage on the feed chemical composition and in vitro digestibility(IVDMD) was investigated in these species and varieties. 1. Dry matter yield increased with advancing maturity regardless of forage species. Among the species triticale plants showed the highest yield. 2. The chemical composition of triticale plants in view of feed value generally placed between wheat and rye plants. 3. IVDMDs of triticale plants decreased from heading to dough stage and then increased at yellow ripe stage, while thoes of wheat and rye plants decreased with advancing maturity. Among plant species triticale. plants showed the highest IVDMD at heading and yellow ripe stage, while rye plants showed the lowest value throughout the maturity.

  • This experiment was carried out to determine agronomic characteristics, nutritive value and yield (DM, CP) of Winter Rye as affected by different slurry application on the basis of N contents respectively and was arranged as a randomized complete block design with seven treatments (chemical fertilizer 160kg Nha, cattle sluny 160 . 320 480kg Nha, swine slurry 160 . 320 480kg Nha) and conducted at National Livestock Research Institute, RDA, in Suweon 6om Sep. 1996. to Apr. 1997. The results obtained are summarized as follows : Plant height and leaf length was influenced by slurry application, was orderly ranked cattle sluny 480kg N1 ha > chemical fertilizer 160kg Nha > swine slurry 480kg Nha. Tiller number was increased with cattle slurry application, especilly, the effect of cattle slurry 480kg Nha was obvious but plot of swine slurry tended not to be regular. Crude protein content of rye increased as slurry application level was increased (p< 0.05), but not significant difference was found ADF and NDF content of rye. RFV(Re1ative Feed Value) of rye as affected by slurry application was classified as Grade 2 in all treatments at harvest, according to the forage quality standard assigned by AFGC. Dry matter yield was shown fiom 4,006 kgha to 8,037 kgha as affected by cattle slurry application, in the case of swine slurry application was shown ffom 4,594 kgha to 6,230 kgha (p< 0.05).

  • Rye has been a major winter forage crop in Korea. Varietal improvement of rye has been practiced either by hybrid or population breeding systems. Hybrid breeding offers important advantages over population breeding since it is normally a cross-pollinated crop. The hybrid breeding in rye has been possible since cytoplasmically inherited forms of male sterility (CMS) and corresponding nuclear restorer genes were found. The objectives of this research were to develop the maintainer and restorer lines of Korean inbred lines and to estimate the effect of 'Pampa' type of CMS cytoplasm on yield and its related characteristics. For easy discrimination of male-sterile status of plants, anther scoring and the restore index system in which seed-setting and pollen quantity of viability were taken into account were established. High significant correlation between pollen quantity and pollen viability was found. For "Pampa" cytoplasm, four of 14 Korean inbred lines tested turned out to be a maintainer but no restorer was found. But for "235b" CMS cytoplasm, seven inbred lines acted as complete restorers. The Korean inbred rye lines acted mainly as maintainers in "Pampa" cytoplasm but acted mainly as restorer in "235b" cytoplasm. The 'Pampa' cytoplasm inducing male sterility reduced cohn length and plant height and increased the number of tiller, so forage yield and grain yield were enhanced. However, heading date was slightly delayed compared to the normal cytoplasm.elayed compared to the normal cytoplasm.

  • Winter annual green manure crops may be an effective tool for environmental-friendly agriculture system. The effect of legume (hairy vetch), non-legume (rye) and N fertilization ($190kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$) was examined and compared on red-pepper yield, nitrogen uptake, carbohydrate composition, and soil N and C contents. We monitored soil N and C for 120 days after incorporation (DAI) of green manures or mineral fertilizer. The mineralization of nitrogen reached the maximum around 30 DAI. The amount of inorganic nitrogen supplied by mineralization of hairy vetch residue was greater with than chemical N or rye. Photosynthetic rate was similar by 70 DAT in all treatments however, it in rye-incorporated red-pepper presented a sharp decline at later growth period. Leaf total nitrogen was greater with hairy vetch and chemical N than rye throughout the experiment. The soluble sugar increased steadily in all treatments from 40 to 110 days after transplanting (DAT) whereas starch showed a tendency of great decrease. Hairy vetch greatly promoted red-pepper growth by the later period however, chemical N showed the highest fruit yields.

  • The green manure crops such as rye, hairy vetch and scotch oat were applied to reduce the injury by continuous cropping system(CCS) of sesame(Sesamum indicum L.) cultivation, which manure crops was sowed in latter-September or mid-October and returned to soil in the next year of May. The growth and yields were increased as 33%(65.0kg/10a) in the rotational cropping system(RCS) compared to continuous cropping system of 48.9kg/10a. In the CCS of sesame, it was increased as $10{\sim}15%$ in the green manure crop cultivation, and rye cultivation was the most effective crop to reduce the injury of continuous cropping in the green manure crops. The RCS displayed lower disease outbreak and Fussarium oxysporum density in the soil compared with the CCS, and the green manure crop showed good effect in the CCS of sesame. In the RCS, the porosity was most high in the RCS and CCS of rye cultivation, while rye and hairy vetch was effective way to reduce the injury of continuous cropping. The outbreaks of wilt disease and phytophthora blight were increased as the CCS years, however displayed lowest outbreaks of disease and the yields showed highest in the rye cultivation.
