In this paper, slit steel rubber bearing is presented as an innovative seismic isolator device. In this type of isolator, slit steel damper is an energy dissipation device. Its advantages in comparison with that of the lead rubber bearing are its simplicity in manufacturing process and replacement of its yielding parts. Also, slit steel rubber bearing has the same ability to dissipate energy with smaller value of displacement. Using finite element method in ABAQUS software, a parametric study is done on the performance of this bearing. Three different kinds of isolator with three different values of strut width, 9, 12 and 15 mm, three values of thickness, 4, 6 and 8 mm and two steel types with different yield stress are assessed. Effects of these parameters on the performance characteristics of slit steel rubber bearing are studied. It is shown that by decreasing the thickness and strut width and by selecting the material with lower yield stress, values of effective stiffness, energy dissipation capacity and lateral force in the isolator reduce but equivalent viscous damping is not affected significantly. Thus, by choosing appropriate values for thickness, strut width and slit steel damper yield stress, an isolator with the desired behavior can be achieved. Finally, the performance of an 8-storey frame with the proposed isolator is compared with the same frame equipped with LRB. Results show that SSRB is successful in base shear reduction of structure in a different way from LRB.
Driving tests using model plastic piles with different hammer cushion materials were performed in order to evaluate the efficiency of energy transfer ratio from the hammer, degree of vibration of the surrounding ground and noise due to impacting. A small pile driving analyzer (PDA) was composed using straingages and Hopkinson bar which is measuring force signal and pile-head velocity. The hammer cushion (cap block) materials used for the model driving tests were commercial Micarta, plywood, polyurethane, rubber (SBR) and silicone rubber. The highest energy transfer ratio was obtained from Micarta in the same soil and driving conditions. Micarta was followed by polyurethane, plywood, rubber and silicone in descending order. The more efficient energy transfdr ratio of the hammer cushion materials became, the bigger average noisy (sound) level was found. In addition, Micarta and polyurethane provided bigger bearing capacities than other materials compared in the same soil and driving conditions in which the static loading tests were performed at the end of driving.
The ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) blends with styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) were prepared from an open 2-roll mill following the conventional rubber blend method, and then cure characteristics, mechanical properties and ozone resistance were subsequently examined. With incorporation of SBR the torque value of the EPDM and SBR blends showed a gradual increase in the cure curve. The maximum torque value was obtained with lowest level at 25wt% of SBR and it was increased linearly with more than 25wt%. As the SBR loading increased scorch time and optimum cure time decreased. Hardness represented a maximum at 50wt% of SBR. However upper and lower than that value it decreased. It was found that the unfavorable characteristics of ozone resistance of pure SBR was significantly improved through the blending of SBR with EPDM.

The proposed hybrid damper installs at a coupling beam and consists of a high-damping rubber (HDR) and steel pin. The proposed hybrid damper adopted a pin-lock system acts as a viscoelastic damper under wind load (small displacement) while it behaves as a hysteretic damper under earthquake load (large displacement). In this paper, the pin-lock mechanism and structural performance of the proposed hybrid damper is evaluated through experiment. Experiments were carried out with the variables which displacement, loading frequency and steel pin quantities were used. Test results showed that the pin-lock mechanism and the performance of the hybrid damper under a large displacement were verified. Also equivalent damping ratios of HDR were increasing at a small displacement as displacement amplitudes were increasing. However HDR did not depend on frequency.
Visco-Plastic Damper (VPD) as a passive energy dissipation device with dual behavior has been recently numerically studied. It consists of two bent steel plates and segments with a viscoelastic solid material in between, combining and improving characteristics of both displacement-dependent and velocity-dependent devices. In order to trust the performance of VPD, for the 1st time this paper experimentally investigates prototype damper behavior under a wide range of frequency and amplitude of dynamic loading. A high-axial damping rubber is innovatively proposed as the viscoelastic layer designed to withstand large axial strains and dissipate energy accordingly. Test results confirmed all assumptions about VPD. The behavior of VPD subjected to low levels of excitation is elastic while with increasing levels of excitation, a significant source of energy dissipation is provided through the yielding of the steel elements in addition to the viscoelastic energy dissipation. The results showed energy dissipation of 99.35 kN.m under a dynamic displacement with 14.095 mm amplitude and 0.333 Hz frequency. Lateral displacement at the middle of the device was created with an amplification factor obtained ranging from 2.108 to 3.242 in the rubber block. Therefore, the energy dissipation of viscoelastic material of VPD was calculated 18.6 times that of the ordinary viscoelastic damper.
Magneto-rheological elastomer (MRE) is a material which shows reversible and various modulus under magnetic field. Comparing to conventional rubber vibration isolator, MREs are able to absorb broader frequency range of vibration. These characteristic phenomena result from the orientation of magnetic particle (i.e., chain-like formation) in rubber matrix. In this study, silicone rubber was used as a matrix of MREs. Carbonyl iron particle (CIP) was used to give magnetic field reactive modulus of MRE. The surface of the CIP was modified with chemical reactants such as silane coupling agent and poly(glycidyl methacrylate), to improve interfacial adhesion between matrix and CIP. The mechanical properties of MREs were measured without the application of magnetic field. The results showed that the tensile strength was decreased while the hardness was increased with the addition of CIP. Also, surface modification of CIP resulted in the improvement of physical properties of MRE, but the degree of orientation of CIP became decreased. The analysis of MR effect was carried out using electromagnetic equipment with various magnetic flux. As the addition of CIP and magnetic flux increased, increment of MR effect was observed. Even though the surface modification of CIP gave positive effect on the mechanical properties of MRE, MR effect was decreased with the surface modification of CIP due to decrease of CIP orientation. Throughout this study, it was found that the loading amounts of CIP affected the mechanical properties of MRE, and surface property of CIP was an important factor on MR effect of MRE.

Traditionally, multi-story buildings are designed to provide stiffer structural support to withstand lateral earthquake loading. Introducing flexible elements at the base of a structure and providing sufficient damping is an alternative way to mitigate seismic hazards. These features can be achieved with a device known as an isolator. This paper covers the design of base isolators for multi-story buildings in medium-risk seismicity regions and evaluates the structural responses of such isolators. The well-known tower building for police personnel built in Dhaka, Bangladesh by the Public Works Department (PWD) has been used as a case study to justify the viability of incorporating base isolators. The objective of this research was to establish a simplified model of the building that can be effectively used for dynamic analysis, to evaluate the structural status, and to suggest an alternative option to handle the lateral seismic load. A finite element model was incorporated to understand the structural responses. Rubber-steel bearing (RSB) isolators such as Lead rubber bearing (LRB) and high damping rubber bearing (HDRB) were used in the model to insert an isolator link element in the structural base. The nonlinearities of rubber-steel bearings were considered in detail. Linear static, linear dynamic, and nonlinear dynamic analyses were performed for both fixed-based (FB) and base isolated (BI) buildings considering the earthquake accelerograms, histories, and response spectra of the geological sites. Both the time-domain and frequency-domain approaches were used for dynamic solutions. The results indicated that for existing multi-story buildings, RSB diminishes the muscular amount of structural response compared to conventional non-isolated structures. The device also allows for higher horizontal displacement and greater structural flexibility. The suggested isolation technique is able to mitigate the structural hazard under even strong earthquake vulnerability.
The present study was performed to evaluate the relaxation patterns of rubber elastics, elastomeric modules and chains stored in the water bath. Initial loading profiles were established for extension of $100\%,\;200\%$ of their original length for elastomeric chains and of 21, 28, 35, 42, 49mm for rubber elastics and elastomeric modules. The tests were performed on materials stored in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ and extraoral elastics stored in dry state at room temperature, at 0 hour, 1 hour, 6 hours, 1 day, 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, and 4 weeks, respectively. The following results were drawn: 1. The relaxation of rubber elastics manifested no correlation with increments of the extension distances, but showed correlation with time lapse. Remaining forces of rubber elastics carne out $84.6-98.52\%$ after 1 day, $70.92-89.31\%$ after 3 weeks of period. 2. The relaxation of elastomers manifested no correlation with increments of the extension distances, however represented considerable relaxation with time lapse as rapid relaxation after 1 hour and then gradual relaxations with time lapse. Modules relaxed much more than chains. $60.58-67.05\%$ of remaining forces for chains and $37.77-65.17\%$ for modules after 1 hour were turned out, and $51.48-62.22\%$ for chains and $8.04-25.15\%$ for modules after 3 weeks as well. 3. Permanent deformation rates of rubber elastics could not be measured with present investigation, but elastomers underwent severe deformations. 4. $3-9\%$ of permanent deformations for chains, $3-10\%$ for modules at 0 hour were turned out, and $25-30\%$ for chains, $96-145\%$ for modules after 3 weeks as well.
This paper presents the experimental as well as analytical study conducted on layer-bonded scrap tire rubber pad (STRP) isolators to develop low-cost seismic isolators applicable to structures in developing countries. The STRP specimen samples were produced by stacking the STRP layers one on top of another with the application of adhesive. In unbonded application, the STRP bearings were placed between the substructure and superstructure without fastening between the contact surfaces which allows roll-off of the contact supports. The vertical compression and horizontal shear tests were conducted with varying axial loads. These results were used to compute the different mechanical properties of the STRP isolators including vertical stiffness, horizontal effective stiffness, average horizontal stiffness and effective damping ratios. The load-displacement relationships of STRP isolators obtained by experimental and finite element analysis results were found to be in close agreement. The tested STRP samples show energy dissipation capacity considerably greater than the natural rubber bearings. The layer-bonded STRP isolators serve positive incremental force resisting capacity up to the shear strain level of 150%.

The present study aims to investigate the dynamic properties of a novel isolation system composed of separate rubber and wire isolators. The testing program comprised pure compressive, pure-shear, compressive-stress dependence, and shear-strain dependence tests that used full-scale test specimens according to ISO 22762-1. A total of 22 test specimens were fabricated and investigated. Among the tests, the pure compressive test was a destructive test that reached up to the failure stage, whereas the others were nondestructive tests before the failure stage. Similar to the pure-shear test, at each compressive-stress level in the compressive dependence test or at each shear-strain level in the shear-strain dependence test, the cyclic loading was conducted for three cycles. In the nondestructive tests, examination of the dynamic shear properties in the X-direction was independent of the Y-direction. The test results revealed that the increase in the shear strain increased the energy dissipation but decreased the damping ratio, whereas the increase in the compressive stress increased the damping ratio. In addition, a macro model was developed to simulate the load-displacement response of the isolation systems, and the prediction results were consistent with the experimental results.
