  • This paper compares the performances of permanent-magnet synchronous (PMS) and permanent-magnet vernier (PMV) machines for low-speed and high-torque applications. For comparison with the PMS machines, we consider two types of the PMV machine. The first one has surface-mounted permanent magnets (PMs) on the rotor and the other has PMs inserted on both sides of the stator and rotor. The PMS and PMV machines are designed to meet the condition of equal output power per unit volume. We analyze the magnetic fields of the machines using a two-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA). We then compare their performances in terms of the generated torque characteristics, power factor, loss, and efficiency.

  • The practical pumping speed of a dry pump is considerably lower than the intrinsic speed because of back-streaming through finite gaps of the rotor assembly. The maximum compression ratio and the ultimate pressure of the pump are also directly influenced by the back-streaming rate. Therefore, information on the gap conductance, which determines the back-streaming characteristics of the rotor assembly, is the most important key for estimating the pumping performance of a dry pump. In this paper, the feasibility of calculating analytically the pumping performance of a multi-stage Roots pump, one of the most popular types of dry pumps, by quantifying the gap conductance in a rational way, is discussed.

  • This paper deals with cryogen, which is used solid nitrogen to keep the operating temperature of High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) synchronous machine. To make the solid nitrogen of liquid nitrogen, liquid helium (LHe) passes into and cools the heat exchanger to its own temperature. Two types of heat exchangers are designed and manufactured to make the solid nitrogen, and temperature characteristics of those compare with each other. The rotor cooled by latent heat of solid nitrogen and it is kept under 40K during 2 hours and 30 minutes without LHe.

  • Wind tunnel testings to develope tilt-rotor Smart Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (SUAV) were intensively performed. Small wind tunnel was used to find and evaluate design parameters and to fix general layout of configuration. The application of large tunnel with 40% scaled model is to collect performance and stability related aerodynamic data. During large scale model test wind tunnel is used as a tool to compare Flaperon types, to improve lift characteristics by using different height vortex generators and to alleviate nacelle separated flow effects on the wing.

  • The Savonius wind turbine has a lower performance than other types of wind turbines which may attract more study focus on this turbine. This study aimed to improve wind turbine performance by combining a conventional blade with an elliptical blade into a combined blade rotor. The analysis was performed on three blade models in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) using ANSYS_Fluent Release 14.5. Then the results were verified experimentally using an open wind tunnel system. The results of the numerical simulation were similar to the experimental and showed that the combined blade rotor has better dragging flow and overlap flow than the conventional and elliptical blade. Experimental verification showed that the combined blade was to increase the maximum coefficient of power ($Cp_{max.}$) by 11% of the conventional blade and to 5.5% of the elliptical blade.

  • The multi-degrees of freedom surface permanent-magnet motor (Multi-D.O.F. SPM) has several degrees of freedom operations that are defined as the "roll", "yaw", and "pitch". Normally, the torque that is generated to rotate a rotor includes ripples. The analysis of the torque ripples is important for improving motor performance. In terms of the electric analysis, torque ripple occurs as a result of many factors, including the rotor and stator structures, the distribution of the air-gap flux density, and the waveform of the current in the coils. In particular, the torque ripple is an important factor in the stable operation of the Multi-D.O.F. SPM. Therefore, in this work, the torque ripple was analyzed using various types of magnetization for the permanent magnet. An improved model was proposed for the Multi-D.O.F. SPM based on this analysis.

  • Recently, electric vehicles have got significant attention because it is more eco-friendly and efficient than internal combustion engine vehicles. Instead of an internal combustion engine, the electric vehicle has a motor for propulsion. The permanent magnet synchronous motor which has permanent magnet instead of field winding in the rotor has especially higher efficiency and power density than other types of motor. When the irreversible demagnetization is occurred, drivers are exposed to high risk of accident by the fault operation of motor. Therefore, the irreversible demagnetization of permanent magnet should be detected to reduce the risk of accident. In this study, the demagnetization diagnosis method based on the result of locked rotor test is proposed. Based on short measurement time, the proposed diagnosis method aims to detect the demagnetization fault when an electric vehicle is at a complete standstill. The proposed method is verified through the finite element analysis.

  • The single phase switched reluctance motor has simple, robust structure and economical drive system. So, it is useful to apply in the industrial and home applied machines. Especially, the single phase induction motor, used much in field, has a low efficiency and control ability. For the replacement of it, the single phase SRM is presented. In this paper, the design and characteristics of single phase SRM considering the rotor shape will be presented in the base of general electric motor design method and poly phase SRM design method.

  • A internal lobe pump is suitable for oil hydraulics of machine tools, automotive engines, compressors, constructions and other various applications. In particular, the pump is an essential machine element of an automotive engine to feed lubricant oil. The subject of this paper is the theoretical analysis of internal lobe pump whose the main components are the rotors: usually the outer one is characterized by lobes with circular shape, while the inner rotor profile is determined as conjugate to the other. The topic of this paper is the design of a new rotor, which is based on specific performance as different types depending on the shape of the lobe of the outer rotor. First, the design of internal lobe pumps with circular, elliptical, and their combined lobe profiles is considered. The latter is a new type of lobe profile with special shape whose curvature follows a definite function. Then we introduce the performance indexes used for the comparison. Some of these indexes, such as flow rate and flow rate irregularity, are commonly used for the comparison, while specific slipping is particularly suitable in this case. It is possible to notice that the circular and elliptical type is comparable to the circular one or the elliptical one in terms of flow rate irregularity, but has improved performance in terms of specific slipping. Results obtained from the analysis enable the designer and manufacturer of oil pump to be more efficient in this field.

  • A comfortable indoor environment is important considering that many hours are spent in residential or office space. A humidifier is used to control the indoor humidity. In particular, an element type humidifier has the advantage of a simple structure and low energy consumption. Two types of humidifiers - stationary or rotor - are commonly used for residential purposes. In this study, performance optimization was conducted for a rotor-type humidifying element used in a residential humidifier. The optimization included the rotation speed, water submersion depth, etc. The test range consisted of an open area to the air from 57 to 90%, rotation speed from 0.2 to 2.0 rpm, frontal air velocity from 0.5 to 2.5 m/s. The results showed that the optimal open area to air was 70%. On the other hand, the effects of the rotation speed on the moisture transfer rate was negligible. On the other hand, the pressure drop increased with increasing rotation speed. As the frontal air velocity increased, both the moisture transfer rate and pressure drop increased. The humidification capacity of the present element was 0.08 ~ 0.31 kg/hr. A comparison of the data with the theoretical results was made.
