  • Radial-vaned air separators show a strong stall suppression effect in an axial flow fans. From a survey of existing literature on the effects and the author's data, a possible mechanism for the significant effects has been proposed here. The stall suppression is suggested to have been achieved by a combination of the following several effects; (1) suction of blade and casing boundary layers and elimination of embryos of stall, (2) separation and straightening of reversed swirling flow from the main flow, (3) induction of the fan main flow toward the casing wall and enhancement of the outward inclination of meridional streamlines across the rotor blade row, thus keeping the Euler head increase in the decrease in fan flow rate, and (4) reinforcement of axi-symmetric structure of the main flow. These phenomena have been induced and enhanced by a stable vortex-ring encasing the blade tips and the air separator. These integrated effects appear to have caused the great stall suppression effect that would have been impossible by other types of stall prevention devices. Thus the author would like to name the device "tip-vortex-ring assisted stall suppression device".

  • This paper describes a rotation-type field mill to measure the electric field intensity caused by thunderclouds on the ground level. The field mill developed is consisted of two isolated electrode vanes, a grounded stator and a rotor. To develop a high sensitive field mill, the principles and design rules of a rotation-type field mill are studied. Also, two types of calibration system, such as a cylindrical guard electrodes and a parallel-plate electrodes, are proposed to determine the sensitivity and frequency bandwidth of the field mill. From the calibration experiment, the frequency bandwidth and the sensitivity of the field mill are DC ~ 200 [Hz] and 0.267 [mV/V/m], respectively. Therefore, it can measure the electric field intensity from 73 [V/m] to 18.7 [㎸/m].

  • 5-axis NC machining has a good advantage of the accessibility of tool motion by adding two rotary axes. It offers numerous advantages such as expanding machining fields in parts of turbo machineries like impeller, propeller, turbine blade and rotor, reasonable tool employment and great reduction of the set-up process. However, as adding two rotary axes, it is difficult to choose suitable machining conditions in terms of cutter path and cutter posture at a cutter contact point. Therefore in this paper, it is proposed to decide suitable machining condition through an experimental method such as adopting various cutter paths, cutter postures types. Also, in order to increase the efficiency of 5-axis machining, it is necessary to minimize the cutter posture changes and create a continuous cutter path while avoiding interference. This study, by using an MC-space algorithm for interference avoidance and an MB-spline algorithm for continuous control, is intended to create a 5-axis machining cutter path with excellent surface quality and economic feasibility. finally, this study will verify the effectiveness of the suggested method through verification processing.

  • With the aid of genetic algorithm (GA), global optimization with multiple geometry parameters is feasible in the design of switched flux permanent magnet (SFPM) machines. To investigate the advantages of global optimization over individual optimization, which has been used extensively for the design of SFPM machines, a comparison between the two approaches is carried out for the case of fixed copper loss and volume. In the case of individual parameter optimization, the sequence in which the individual parameters are optimized is very important. In the global optimization a better design can always be achieved although the corresponding torque density is found to be only slightly better than that of individually optimized with correct design sequence. By using the obtained global optimization results, the performance in machines having two types of stator and rotor pole combinations, i.e. 12/10 and 12/14, are compared, and it is shown that higher torque is exhibited in the 12/14 SFPM machine. Finally, this paper also demonstrates that global optimization, with the restriction of equal pole width, magnet thickness and slot opening, can maximize the torque density without significantly sacrificing other performance, such as cogging torque and overload capability.

  • Generator for wind power can be either synchronous or asynchronous (induction) types. Induction and synchronous generators behave in a different way when subjected to severe faults. Induction generators does not have an angle stability limit and short circuit in the neighborhood of an Induction generator causes the demagnetization of the machine when the fault is cleared, the voltage raises slowly, while the grid contributes with reactive power to the generator and the magnetic flux recovers. On the other hand in the synchronous generators the recovery of the voltage is immediate, since the excitation of the rotor angle comes from an independent circuit. This paper shows the result of the transient state analysis in the network connected to wind generation system Several case studies have been conducted to determine the effect of the clearing time of a fault on the network stability. It has been found that the critical clearing time can be as low as 61ms in the case of induction generator compared to 370ms in the case of synchronous generator.

  • As modem industrialized society progresses, the demand for electric power is increasing rapidly. The electric power system is getting amazingly bigger and complicated, which can easily induce serious troubles from the potential of large fault problems and/or system failure. The monitoring and diagnosis of the electric machine for the fault detection and protection has been important part in the electric power system. Most faults in the generator appear in the winding. This paper presents the air-gap magnetic flux characteristic of a small-scale 2-pole synchronous generator according to the faults in the field winding to protect the generator from the fault. The magnetic flux patterns in air-gap of a generator under various fault conditions as well as a normal state are simulated by using finite element method. These results are successfully applied to the detection and diagnosis of the short-circuit condition in rotor windings of a high capacitor generator.

  • The task performed by induction motors grows increasingly complex in modern industry and hence improvements are sought in the field of fault diagnosis. It is essential to diagnose faults at their very inception, as unscheduled machine down time can upset critical dead lines and cause heavy financial losses. Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques have proved their ability in detection of incipient faults in electrical machines. This paper presents an application of AI techniques for the detection of inter-turn insulation and bearing wear faults in single-phase induction motors. The single-phase induction motor is considered a proto type model to create inter-turn insulation and bearing wear faults. The experimental data for motor intake current, rotor speed, stator winding temperature, bearing temperature and noise of the motor under running condition was generated in the laboratory. The different types of fault detectors were developed based upon three different AI techniques. The input parameters for these detectors were varied from two to five sequentially. The comparisons were made and the best fault detector was determined.

  • A superconducting synchronous motor with rotating field coil has been designed. This rotating field coil is composed of high-temperature superconducting(HTS) wire but the stationary armature windings are composed of conventional copper wire. In this paper a 5MW class synchronous motor with rotating HTS coil is designed. This motor is aimed to be utilized for ship propulsion so it has very low-speed. Firstly an air-cored type has been designed, which does not have any iron core both at the field and at the armature teeth. Secondly several iron-cored rotor types are considered to reduce expensive HTS wire cost.

  • A high gradient magnetic (HGM) separator prototype with the $2^{nd}$ generation high temperature superconducting (2G HTS) magnetic system operated in sub-cooled nitrogen is presently under development at NRC "Kurchatov Institute" (Moscow, Russia). The main goal of the project is an attempt to shift away from the complicated liquid helium cryostats towards simple cryocooler-based nitrogen cryogenics as much more convenient for HGM separators industrial applications. Using of commercial HTS tapes allows to get a sufficient level of magnetic fields and extraction forces with low energy consumption. The expected operational parameters of the device are 1.2-1.5 T in the empty operational gap and up to 3 T on the ferromagnetic filters. In this paper we briefly describe the design of the HTS rotary separator prototype with the horizontally oriented rotor axis and propose different types of ferromagnetic filters intended for weakly magnetic ores enrichment.
