  • Hysteresis motor is a synchronous machine which has simple structure and self-start characteristic but also has serious difficulties in numerical analysis. In this study, a finite element analysis for hysteresis motor considering the hysteresis characteristics is presented. The hysteresis model is the magnetization-dependent Preisach model which explains hysteresis phenomena very well. From this, we estimate the instantaneous torque, average torque and hysteresis loss of the rotor, considering slot and winding distribution.

  • The theory for a novel fault-tolerant 4-active-pole homopolar magnetic bearing is developed. If any one coil of the four coils in the bearing actuator fail, the remaining three coil currents change via an optimal distribution matrix such that the same opposing pole, C-core type, control fluxes as those of the un-failed bearing are produced. The hompolar magnetic bearing thus provides unaltered magnetic forces without any loss of the bearing load capacity even if any one coil suddenly fails. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the novel fault-tolerant, 4-active pole homopolar magnetic bearings.

  • Tilting pad journal bearing is widely used for steam turbines because of its excellent dynamic stability. As the turbine capacity increases, power loss in the bearings becomes a matter of concern. Power loss in tilting pad journal bearings can be reduced by increasing the bearing clearance and reducing the pad arc length. In this study, the tilting pad journal bearing is tested by changing the seal tooth clearance to verify the static characteristics of the bearing. Bearing power loss and bearing metal temperature are evaluated to compare the bearing's performance and reliability for several test cases. The test bearing is a tilting pad journal bearing with 300.62mm inner diameter and 120.00mm active length. The bearing power loss, its metal temperature, and oil film thickness are measured and evaluated based on the rotor's rotational speed, oil flow rate, and bearing load. Test results show that a tilting pad journal bearing with large seal tooth clearance has 40% lower power loss compared with a bearing with a small seal tooth clearance. As the seal tooth clearance is increased, the power loss of the tilting pad journal bearing decreases. However, with respect to the bearing metal temperatures, a detuning point is observed that makes the minimum bearing metal temperature. Moreover, as the seal tooth clearance is increased, the oil film thickness increases due to high viscosity.

  • This paper presents the characteristic of newly developed electrical steel and motor performance analysis for HEV/EV. This material is developed and optimized for high frequency operation to reduce the core losses in traction motors to increase fuel efficiency. Four types of electrical steel are introduced, which are optimized for high flux density (PNHF), high frequency low core loss (PNF), high punchability (PNS) and high strength (PNT) to meet different specifications from different types of traction motors. To identify the motor performance with this material, finite element analysis was used to calculate core loss as well as Ld and Lq for efficiency map. Also structure analysis was performed to calculate stress on bridge rotor.

  • This paper presents the shape optimization of a permanent magnet synchronous motor to reduce the torque ripple and iron loss. Specifically, the harmonics of the electromotive force and cogging torque are decreased by adjusting the permanent magnet arrangement and non-uniform air gap length. In addition, an additional flux path along the q-axis is proposed with a unique rotor shape to increase the q-axis inductance and reluctance torque. The improvement in the performance of the proposed model is verified with simulated and experimental results.

  • Performance test of the 75ton class turbopump turbine was performed. Using the measured turbine power characteristics in the wide-range operational conditions, variations of nozzle velocity ratio, total pressure loss, and relative flow angle to the pressure ratios and rotational speeds are quantified. Efficiency and nozzle exit pressure behavior was also investigated and compared with 30ton turbopump turbine data. A rotor blade was redesigned based on the test results and CFD analysis.

  • The axial bearing using two ring type permanent magnets to support the weight of a flywheel is proposed to reduce the bearing loss in a flywheel energy storage , system. Two permanent magnet makes stable force in axial direction but unstable force in lateral direction. The lateral unstable stiffness is identified quantitatively using flux analysis, and then through the rotor dynamic analysis on a rigid flywheel system the unstable effects on the system by the stiffness is investigated.

  • Flux-switching permanent magnet machines (FSPMM) have doubly-salient and simple structures making it cost effective and suitable for mass production. In addition, it is possible to increase the rotor rotating speed and concentrate the flux of the permanent magnet on the air-gap. Due to these merits, the FSPMM can be applied to the various industry applications. To improve the performance, various design variables need to be studied in terms of design techniques. In this paper, we especially concentrate on the distribution of iron losses using a two-dimensional finite-element method (2D FEM). As a result, we can get an information for high efficiency FSPMM design.

  • The cooling system is one of the most concerning factor for the reliability of the electric propulsion ship. Generally, a drive system operation in higher temperature decreases the device's reliability and power efficiency. The management of power loss and temperature of switching devices is indispensable for the reliability of the power electric system. In this paper, the switching devices are molded by IGBT, and the propulsion system is consisted of MIIR(Motor with Inverter Internal to Rotor). The system composition interacts with each other to calculate the loss and temperature of device. The calculation result is used for modeling and designing of the control and monitoring system for the electric propulsion system.
