Modelling and Analysis of Roll-Type Steel Mat for Rapid Stabilization of Permafrost (II) - Parametric Analysis - (영구동토 급속안정화를 위한 롤타입강재매트의 모델링과 해석(II) - 변수해석 -)

  • Using the finite element analysis model presented in accompanying paper, parametric study was performed in this paper. Various parameters were considered such as the width of wheel loads-induced permanent plastic deformation, backfill, equivalent thickness and orthogonal characteristic of steel mats. The effects of these parameters were analyzed for vertical and rotational displacements, maximum moment and tensile stress. From the parametric studies, it is found that great vertical deflection and tensile stress above allowable flexural tensile strength are developed in steel mats by the wheel loads-induced permanent plastic deformation. Backfill or increasing the thickness of steel mats is a feasible solution on this problem.

  • The vibration characteristics of a rotating cantilever beam undergoing impulsive force are investigated using wavelet transformation. The transient response induced by the impulsive force and the rigid body motion of the beam are calculated using hybrid deformation variable modeling along with the Rayleigh-Ritz assumed mode methods. The vibration characteristics of the beam can be analyzed in time-frequency domain with the wavelet transform method. Therefore, the effects of the impulsive force on the transient vibration characteristics of the beam can be investigated more effectively.

  • Dynamic response behaviors of a bridge are examined under seismic excitations in the 2-dimensional directions are examined. A three-dimensional mechanical model is utilized and the corresponding equations of motions are derived to consider the two directional bridge motions due to the randomness residing in the excitation directions. The arbitrary 2-dimensional directions are simulated by applying two independent excitations in the two directions: main direction(longitudinal) ; the additive direction normal to the main (transverse). The rotational superstructure motions due to the spacial motions of the bridge are considered by admitting the deformation of the bearings at supports. The relative displacement to the ground motions and the relative distance between adjacent oscillators are found to be increased by a considerable amount in the case when considering arbitrary directional seismic excitations. It is also found that the piermotions show more complicated behaviors due to the arbitrary seismic directions.

Parametric study of piled raft for three load-patterns

  • Paper presents an improved solution algorithm based on Finite Element Method to analyse piled raft foundation. Piles are modelled as beam elements with soil springs. Finite element analysis of raft is based on the classical theory of thick plates resting on Winkler foundation that accounts for the transverse shear deformation of the plate. Four node, isoparametric rectangular elements with three degrees of freedom per node are considered in the development of finite element formulation. Independent bilinear shape functions are assumed for displacement and rotational degrees of freedom. Effect of raft thickness, soil modulus and load pattern on the response is considered. Significant improvement in the settlements and moments in the raft is observed.

  • In this paper, a enw model-base three-dimensional (3-D) object recognition mehtod using hopfield network is proposed. To minimize deformation of feature values on 3-D rotation, we select 3-D shape features and 3-D relational features which have rotational invariant characteristics. Then these feature values are normalized to have scale invariant characteristics, also. The input features are matched with model features by optimization process of hopjfield network in the form of two dimensional arrayed neurons. Experimental results on object classification and object matching with the 3-D rotated, scale changed, an dpartial oculued objects show good performance of proposed method.

  • In order to respond to the increasing demands of ultraprecision positioning mechanism in the field of precision engineering, more accurate stages are needed whose positioning uncertainty should be in the unprecedented level of nanometers, while maintaining a long travek range. For this application, most conventional stage mechanisms are found not suitable, so the concept of dual servo, which uses two different servos, is one of the new design and control strategies being extensively investigated these days, This paper presents a fine motion mechanism as a part of research on the dual servo control. The stage is made of a single structure of elastic flexure, whose xy .theta. motions are induced in the form of elastic deformation activated by three piezoelectric actuators. Experimental results show that the translational and rotational motions of the stage can be controlled with resolutions of 5 nm and 0.1 arcsec, respectively.

  • The transient temperature distribution in the continuous friction welding 304 stainless steel bars is investigated by experimental and analytical methods. It is calculated by F.D.M. (finite difference method). The heating pressure, the rotational speed and friction coefficient obtained from experiment are used to determine the heat input at the contacting surface. Thermal properties of the workpiece are the function of temperature. The calculated temperature is well coincided with the measured value. The grain size at weld interface is extremely small due to the severe plastic deformation at high temperature, and result of this refined zone reveals higher hardness value. Because the HAZ is very narror about 2-3 mm, welding defects do not occure.

  • The rotational performance off machine tool spindle has a direct influence upon the surface finish of the finished workpiece. This running accuracy of the spindle is improved by increasing preload on the bearings, while it results in higher temperature rise and larger thermal deformation. Therefore, finding the optimal preload condition for high speed spindle is very important factors in spindle motion. in spindle motion. In this study, the effect of the preload on the roundness accuracy has been examined at the different cutting conditions. Experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of the bearing preload on the running accuracy of high speed spindle which was supported by two angular contact bearings.

  • Recently, technical trend in machine tools is focused on enhancing of speed, accuracy and reliability. The high speed usually results in thermal displacement and structural deformation. To minimize the thermal effect, precision machine tools adopt a high precision cooling system. This study proposes a temperature control for an oil cooler system using Pill control with fuzzy logic. In the cooler system, refrigerant flow rate is controlled by rotational speed of a compressor, and outlet oil temperature is selected as the control variable. The fuzzy control rules iteratively correct PID parameters to minimize the error and difference between the outlet temperature and the reference temperature. Here, ambient temperature is used as the reference one. To show the effectiveness of the proposed method, a series of experiments are conducted for an oil cooler system of machine tools, and the results are compared with the ones of a conventional Pill control. The experimental results show that the proposed method has advantages of faster response and smaller overshoot.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the free vibration characteristics of tapered beams with general boundary condition(translational and rotational elastic support) at one end and carrying a tip mass with translational elastic support at the other end. The beam model is based on the classical Bernoulli-Euler beam theory which neglects the effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation. The governing differential equation for the free vibrations of linearly tapered beams is solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. Numerical results are compared with existing solutions by other methods for cases in which they are available. The lowest four natural frequencies are calculated over a wide range of section ratio, dimensionless spring constant and mass ratio.
