  • In this paper, we investigated the disc warping in high-speed slim-type optical disc drive. Recently, the information storage devices are increasing track density and higher rotation speed to enhance their recording capacity and their data transfer rate. Generally, ODD used in the Lap-top Computer has small inner space. So, the flow instability of inner space is rapidly increased as its higher rotation speed. An extreme case, the flow instability causes the malfunction of readout at pick-up of drives. The experiments and numerical analysis were carried out for several cases, the result shows the influence of airflow to the disc warping.

  • The hemispherical resonator gyroscope is a type of vibratory gyroscope, which can measure angle or angular rate, based on its operating mode. This paper deals with the case when the hemispherical resonator gyroscope is operated in angle measurement mode. In angle measurement mode, the resonator pattern angle precesses, with respect to the external rotation input, by the principle of the Coriolis effect, so that the external rotation can be estimated, by measuring the amount of precession angle. However, this pattern angle drifts, due to the manufacturing error of the resonator. Since the drift effect causes degradation of the angle estimation performance of the resonator, the corresponding drift compensation control should be performed, to enhance the estimation performance. In this paper, a mathematical model of the hemispherical resonator gyro is first introduced. By using the mathematical model, a nonlinear observer for imperfection parameter estimation, and the corresponding compensation controller are designed to operate hemispherical resonator gyros, as angle measurement sensors.

  • The first step of face recognition is to align an input face picture with database images. We propose a new algorithm of removing registration error in eigenspace. Our algorithm can correct for translation, rotation and scale changes. Linear matrix modeling of registration error enables us to compensate for subpixel errors in eigenspace. After calculating derivative of a weighting vector in eigenspace we can obtain the amount of translation or rotation without time consuming search. We verify that the correction enhances the recognition rate dramatically.

  • A Navier-Stokes code has been developed to simulate the flow through a cross flow fan. It is based on an unstructured finite volume method and uses moving grid technique to model the rotation of the fan. A low Reynolds number turbulence model is used to calculate eddy viscosity. The basic algorithm is SIMPLE. Numerical simulations over a wide range of flow rate are carried out to validate the code. Comparison of all numerical solutions with experimental data confirms the validity of the present code. Present numerical solutions show a noticeable improvement over a previous numerical method which is based on a model of body force to simulate the rotation of the impeller.

  • A turbo classifier having a rotating rotor of two stage classification region has been developed to have a cut size of 1 micro meter. Particle number concentrations were counted using Aerosol Particle Sizer (APS, TSI co., USA) at inlet and outlet of the classifier. Partial classification efficiency was obtained at various rotation speeds, total flow rates, and feed rates of powders, and classification characteristic depending on design parameters was discussed. Classification performance was enhanced as rotation speed of rotor increased and total flow rate decreased.

  • Face detection plays an important role in HCI and face recognition. In this paper, we propose a rotation-invariant real-time face detection algorithm for color images in complex background. It consists of four processing step: (1) motion detection, (2) skin color region filler, (3) Eyemap detector for rotated face, and (4) Adaboost face classifier. This system has been tested in in-door environments, such as office and achieves over 95% detection rate.

  • In optical disk drive (ODD), disk rotation speed has been increasing rapidly to achieve high data transfer rate. High servo bandwidths for focusing and tracking actuator are required to follow dynamic disturbance by high rotation speed in ODD. However, the servo bandwidth is significantly limited by some vibration modes which are induced by the flexibility of moving part. In this work, the vibration modes affecting bandwidth of actuators are suppressed by modifying actuating force by VCM. For this, the relation between the horizontal component of the actuating force and vibration mode is analyzed and force characteristic affecting to vibration mode is obtained through electromagnetic and structural analysis using simulation program.

  • Curing reaction was carried out with the acrylic resin (ACR) [n-butyl acrylate/atyrene/2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate/acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate (AAEM)] synthesized before and a curing agent, hexamethoxymethylmelamine (HMMM). With rotational rheometer, the effect of catalysts on curing rate of acrylic resin/melamine was examined. Among the four catalysts used, p-toluene sulfonic acid showed the highest reactivity, and the optimum amount of catalyst was 0.5 phr. It was observed that in the ACR/HMMM curing reaction, gelation point was lowered with the increasing the amount of AAEM and HMMM in the ACR.

  • The hindered internal rotation effect of methyl group on chemical reaction was studied for cis-trans isomerization reaction of 1-bromopropene system using RRKM technique. A comparative study of the isomerization rates was also performed between the rigid and allowed internal rotations. The calculated rate of rigid cis-trans isomerization of 1-bromopropene was shown to be three times higher than its other halogenated propene homologues with its internal rotations and found to be in good agreement with experimental observations. These findings could be explained reasonably well in terms of the differences of the rotational barrier heights among halogenated propenes and correlated with the relatively low internal rotation barrier of cis-1-bromopropene, 230 cal/mol, compared to those of other cis-1-halopropenes, 700-800 cal/mol, and trans-1-halopropenes, 2.0-2.4 kcal/mol.

  • Molecular reorientation of oblate symmetric top molecules in the presence of internal rotation is investigated and an analytic expression for the spin-rotational relaxation rate of a nucleus attached to the internal rotor is obtained as a function of the internal angular momentum correlation time. The overall reorientation of the symmetric top is treated by the anisotropic rotational diffusion and the internal rotation is assumed to undergo modified extended rotational diffusion. The result is compared with the previous work for the prolate symmetric top molecule and it is shown that both results reduce to the same expression in the spherical top limit.
