  • Applying a general Galerkin FE lubrication analysis method to spiral groove dry gas seals, this study intends to analyze in detail the effects of groove design parameters, such as a spiral angle, groove width ratio, groove radius ratio, groove depth ratio, and groove taper ratio, on the lubrication performances of an opening force, leakage, axial stiffness and damping, and angular stiffness and damping at low and high rotating speeds: 3,600 and 15,000 nm. Results show that, for the primary design consideration performances such as the opening force and axial and angular stiffnesses, a spiral angle of $25^{\circ}$, a groove width ratio of 0.46, a groove radius ratio of 1.1, a groove depth ratio of 1.0, and a groove taper ratio of 0.0 are preferred. Where the recommended relatively low values of groove depth and taper ratios are to keep the axial and angular dampings positive or higher than 0 particularly at the high rotating speed.

  • The changing process from hovering mode to transition one is of importance to determine a stability of tilt-rotor aircraft, which is utilized in UAV(Unmaned Aerial Vehicle). The analysis on fluid flows and aerodynamic characteristics according to variation of tilting angle of rotor is essential step in development of tilt-rotor. In the present study, the computation domain is divided into the rotating and stationary regions in order to consider the rotating blades. For the convenient realization of various tilting angle as well as application of boundary condition, the whole computation region is constructed into sphere domain. The near farfield boundary condition is adopted. The airfoil used in computation is NACA 0012. The computation results for the hovering mode are validated by comparing with previously conducted experimental results. From the results, the flow fields around rotor blade and the aerodynamic characteristics in transition mode are observed. The computational result will provide the basis for development and performance evaluation of tilt-type aircraft.

  • This paper describes aerodynamic characteristics of an Archimedes spiral wind turbine with various angles of attack. The range of angles was controlled from $-30^{\circ}$ (clockwise) to $+30^{\circ}$ (clockwise). The rotating speed of wind turbine at the same angle of attack in both directions was different. The reason why the-maximum rotational speed was observed at $15^{\circ}$ in clockwise direction can be explained based on angular momentum conservation. Quantitative flow visualization around Archimedes wind turbine blade was carried out between $-15^{\circ}$ (clockwise) and $+15^{\circ}$ (counter clockwise) using high resolution PIV method. The relationship between drag force and rotating speeds was discussed. From these results, optimum design on yawing system of Archimedes spiral wind turbine may provide high efficiency on small wind power system.

  • Purpose: This study examined the hip and lumbopelvic movement while the hip was rotating laterally in individuals with chronic low back pain (CLBP). Methods: Sixty healthy subjects and sixty subjects with CLBP were enrolled in this study. Myomotion (Myomotion research pro, Noraxon Inc., German) was used to measure the hip lateral rotation and the lumbopelvic movement. An independent t-test was used to compare the hip lateral rotation and lumbopelvic rotation between the groups. Results: Between healthy males and females, healthy females showed a smaller hip lateral rotation angle (HLRA) than healthy males in the hip lateral rotation test (HLRT). Between the healthy females and females with CLBP, the females with CLBP showed a smaller HLRA and greater lumbopelvic motion than the healthy females in the HLRT, and their lumbopelvic motions occurred earlier during lateral rotation of the hip. Finally, between the males and females with CLBP, the females with CLBP showed a smaller HLRA and greater lumbopelvic motion in the HLRT, and their lumbopelvic motions occurred earlier during lateral rotation of the hip. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the CLBP affected the hip lateral rotation, and the lumbopelvic movement depended on gender. In particular, compared to the other groups, the females with CLBP showed a larger lumbopelvic rotation angle and smaller hip lateral rotation angle and lumbopelvic motion occurred early during lateral rotation of the hip.

  • In this paper, free vibration of rotating beam with random properties is studied. The cross-sectional area, elasticity modulus, moment of inertia, shear modulus and density are modeled as random fields and the rotational speed as a random variable. To study uncertainty, stochastic finite element method based on second order perturbation method is applied. To discretize random fields, the three methods of midpoint, interpolation and local average are applied and compared. The effects of rotational speed, setting angle, random property variances, discretization scheme, number of elements, correlation of random fields, correlation function form and correlation length on "Coefficient of Variation" (C.O.V.) of first mode eigenvalue are investigated completely. To determine the significant random properties on the variation of first mode eigenvalue the sensitivity analysis is performed. The results are studied for both Timoshenko and Bernoulli-Euler rotating beam. It is shown that the C.O.V. of first mode eigenvalue of Timoshenko and Bernoulli-Euler rotating beams are approximately identical. Also, compared to uncorrelated random fields, the correlated case has larger C.O.V. value. Another important result is, where correlation length is small, the convergence rate is lower and more number of elements are necessary for convergence of final response.

  • Hydraulic systems are used to transform mechanical energy and fluid energy into each other. Its applications are very wide over the whole industries such as automobiles, public works, rockets, machine tools, construction heavy equipments, airplaces and so on. They are hydraulic pumps that transform energy in the systems. In this study, with basic operation principles as a start point, I tried to understand how the rotating radius of a piston affects the lubrication characteristics in more practical conditions, a swash-plate with tilt angle zero capable of rotating motion and other devices was used. In this paper, a slipper was located on 45mm eccentricity from the center of a swash-plate. As a result, through this experiment, it was found that the rotating radius of a piston affects load capacity, leakage flow and lubrication characteristics and it is one of the important parts for improving the pump efficiency.

  • In the case of the general helicopter among rotorcraft, length of the rotor blade for thrust-generation is longer than that of fuselage and tail rotor is required in order to compensate moment of the fuselage. For those reasons, enough space for take-off and landing should be secured and an accessibility for building is low. Also, the accidents caused by tail rotor occur frequently. However, the case of counter-rotating has merits that tail rotor is unnecessary as well as length of the rotor blade can be shortened but has a weakness that the weight of body is increased. In the present study, aerodynamic force measurement on single rotor system equipped with NACA0012 airfoil, which has aspect ratio of 6 and chord length of 35.5 mm, was carried out. And measurement was conducted with blade which has a half size of the former blade by using single motor counter-rotating. Aerodynamic force measurement was acquired by using 6-component balances and coefficients of thrust and power were derived along the pitch angle varying from 0$^{\circ}$ to 90$^{\circ}$ with the increment of 10$^{\circ}$. Those aerodynamic force data will be utilized for the design and production of brand-new counter-rotating rotor blade system which has same thrust with single blade system and provides a good accessibility to building by reducing its blade length.

  • Pressure coefficient in rotating discharge hole was measured to gain insight into the influence of rotation to the discharge characteristics of rotating discharge hole. Pressure measurements were done by the telemetry system that had been developed by the authors. The telemetry system measures static pressure using piezoresistive pressure sensors. Pressure coefficients in rotating discharge hole were measured in longitudinal direction and circumferential direction with various rotating speed and 3 pressure ratios. From the results, the pressure coefficient, and therefore the discharge coefficient, is known to decrease with the increase of Ro number owing to the increase of flow approaching angle to the discharge hole inlet. However, there exists critical Ro number where the decrease rate of discharge coefficient with the increase of Ro number changes abruptly; flow separation occurs from the discharge hole exit at this critical Ro number. Critical Ro number increases with the increase of length-to-diameter ratio, but the increase is small where the length-to-diameter ratio is higher than 3. The decrease rate of discharge coefficient with the increase of Ro number depends on the pressure recovery at the discharge hole, and the rate is different from each length-to-diameter ratio; it has tendency that the short discharge hole shows higher decrease rate of discharge coefficient.

  • For a rigid retaining wall with rough face, the magnitude and distribution of active earth pressure on the wall are affected by the shape of failure surface and arching effect developed in the backfill as well as internal friction angle of the backfill and wall friction angle. Therefore, the practical shape of failure surface and arching effect in the backfill must be considered to acquire accurate magnitude and non-linear distribution of active earth pressure acting on the rigid retaining wall. In this study, a new formulation for calculating the active earth pressure on a rough rigid retaining wall rotating about the top is proposed considering the practical shape of non-linear failure surface and arching effects. Accuracy of the proposed equation is checked through comparisons of calculations from the proposed equations with existing model test results. The comparisons show that the proposed equations produce satisfactory results.

  • A numerical design analysis is conducted to search for an optimal shape of outlet in a rotating-disk CVD reactor. The goal is to suppress flow recirculation that has been found in a reactor having a sudden expansion of flow passage outside of the rotating disk. In order to streamline gas flow, the sidewall at which the flow in the Ekman layer is impinged, is tilted. The axisymmetric laminar flow and heat transfer in the reactor are simulated using the incompressible ideal gas model. For the conventional vertical sidewall, the flow recirculation forming in the corner region could be expanded into the interior to distort the upstream flow. The numerical results show that this unfavorable phenomenon inducing back flow could be dramatically suppressed by tilting the sidewall at a certain range of angle. The assessment of deviation in deposition rate based on the characteristic isotherm illustrates that the sidewall tilting may expand the domain of stable plug-like flow regime toward higher pressure. A physical interpretation is attempted to explain the mechanism to suppress flow recirculation.
