The field experiment was carried out in order to find out the factors affecting lodging of Korean soybean varieties. Among the variety groups which were grown under the same cultural conditions, 25 Korean local varieties were selected by 5 lodging degree, and investigated their root characteristics in relation to lodging. The results obtained were as follows; There were no significant relationships between root dry weight, number of primary roots, number of adventitious roots and lodging. There also were no clear relationships between shoot/root weight ratio and lodging. However, it was recognized that the shoot weight/number of thick roots was highly related to soybean lodging. The susceptible varieties to lodging showed less shoot/thick root ratio.
Experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of size of root crown at transplanting and fertilization on the growth and root yield of Angelica gigas Nakai. Plant height and fresh weight of shoots were increased by fertilizer application, but was not different in emergence rate. Size of root crown at transplanting was also affected the growth of shoot. Plant which had 7.2mm of root crown at transplanting showed highest in plant height and fresh weight of shoots. Growth of root in terms of root length, number of root branches, diameter of root crown, and fresh weight of root was increased by fertilizer application and 5.4mm of root crown at transplanting. Application of fertilizer accelerated the development and growth of node on the stem, which in turn resulted bolting and flowering. Plants which had greater than 7.2mm of root crown at transplanting and application of fertilizer were produced woody roots. Woody roots cannot be used for medicinal purpose. Therefore, yield of roots was highest at transplanting of 3.lmm root crown with fertilizer application.
The effects of supplementing Gamba grass (Andropogon gayanus) with varying levels of hay from cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) and dried cassava root chip on growth and diet digestibility were studied using local male goats with an average initial body weight of 14.0 kg. Thirty-two animals were allocated to a completely randomized $2{\times}2$ factorial design with eight animals per treatment. The factors were two levels of cassava hay (25% and 35% of an expected dry matter (DM) intake of 3% of body weight) and cassava root chips (0 or 1% of body weight) on an individual basis with grass offered ad libitum. Another four animals were assigned to a $4{\times}4$ Latin square design to study digestibility, and were given the same four diets as in the growth experiment. Total DM intake was significantly higher in the group fed diets with cassava hay and root while the DM intake of Gamba grass was not significantly different between treatments. The supplementation with cassava hay and root increased the apparent digestibility of DM, organic matter and N and resulted in a higher N-retention. The apparent digestibility of neutral detergent fibre and acid detergent fiber was not affected significantly. The average daily gain of animals fed diets supplemented with both cassava hay and root was significantly higher than for the animals supplemented with cassava hay alone. The highest daily gain recorded was 70 g/day. In conclusion, supplementing a basal diet of Gamba grass with cassava hay and root chips improved DM intake, digestibility, N-retention and weight gain. In order to minimize the waste of cassava hay, the inclusion level of cassava hay can be recommended to be 25% of expected DM intake, which would give acceptable intake and growth performance when cassava root is included in the diet.

This study was carried out in order to investigate the early growth and root development characteristics of Peucedanum japonicum container seedlings. The experiment was performed by containers (128 and 200 cavities containers) and shading levels (0%, 35%, 50% and 75% shading). Germination rate of P. japonicum seeds was getting higher in the lower shading level and the highest in the full sunlight (71.9%). Plant height was the highest under 50% shading of all containers. Fresh weight and dry weight of the shoot (leaves + stem) were the highest under 50% shading of all containers, too. Meanwhile, fresh weight and dry weight of the root per plant were the highest under the full sunlight of 128 cavities container such as 0.34 g and 0.03 g, respectively. Total root length, root project area and root surface area were higher under the full sunlight of 128 cavities container such as 234.5 cm, $6.6cm^2$ and $20.8cm^2$, respectively and the next higher was under 35% shading such as 201.7 cm, $5.9cm^2$ and $18.4cm^2$, respectively. A case of root volume was the highest with $0.15cm^3$ under the full sunlight. As a result of the surveying the whole experiment, it is concluded that the shoot and root of P. japonicum seedling grow nicely by maintaining 35% shading.

This study was carried out in order to investigate the early growth and root development characteristics of Atractylodes japonica container seedling. Experiment was performed by light intensity (100%, 60%, 25% and 10% of full sunlight). Height was surveyed well under 25% of full sunlight (overall 11.013.0%). Root collar diameter was the highest in the full sunlight (7.52 mm). It was the highest fresh weight (1.52 g, 0.92 g, 0.90 g and 3.34 g) under 25% of full sunlight, root dry weight was getting higher in the higher light level and the highest in the full sunlight (0.13 g). Total root length, root project area, root surface area and root volume were the highest under 25% of full sunlight (434.7 cm, $17.4cm^2$, $54.7cm^2$, $0.55cm^3$, respectively) and the lowest under 10% of full sunlight. As a result of surveying the whole experiment, A. japonica is judged nicely by maintaining 25% of full sunlight, excepting 10% of full sunlight. And light levels during the early growth are overly important to improve early growth.
The study was carried out to clarify reasonable production of healthy seedling, optimal Pot depth, and appropriate transplanting time, which can be deduced from understanding of seedling quality. Seedling quality results from growth of root and shoot, morphology and distribution of root system under influence of Pot depth during seedling growing period. Stem height, shoot dry weight, leaf area and leaf number were increased in proportion to depth of pots. Growth of shoot and root during seedling growing period showed the most dramatic development between 20th and 25th day after temporary planting. Root number increased as pot depth decrease and total root length and dry weight increased as pot depth increase. In 5cm pot, relative multiplication rate was higher and mean extension rate was lower than other depth of Pot. The limitation of pot volume in which rhizosphere was located enhance the development of roots of second and third order. At 20th days after temporary Planting root distribution was relatively uniform in length and development of adventitious root on stem base was poor as Pot depth decreased.
This study was carried out to investigate all the parts' weight growth under the different light intensity and root-cutting. As results : ${\cdot}$ Fresh and dry weight of leaf, shoot, root and seedling treated under 63% R.L.I showed the largest growth. ${\cdot}$ The largest growth in fresh and dry weight of shoot arid seedling appeared at 1/4 root cutting plot. ${\cdot}$ The value of T/R ratio was increased in low light intensity and high root-cutting. ${\cdot}$ The simple nonlinear relationship between light intensity, root-cutting and T/R ratio was recognized, respectively.
BACKGROUND: Since the number of crops cultivated in reclaimed land is huge, it is very difficult to quantify the total crop production. Therefore, a non-destructive method for predicting crop production is needed. Salt tolerant root vegetables such as red beets and sugar beet are suitable for cultivation in reclaimed land. If their underground biomass can be predicted, it helps to estimate crop productivity. Objectives of this study are to investigate maximum leaf length and weight of red beet, sugar beet, and turnips grown in reclaimed land, and to determine optimal model with regression analysis for linear and allometric growth models. METHODS AND RESULTS: Maximum leaf length, width, and root fresh weight of red beets, sugar beets, and turnips were measured. Ten linear models and six allometric growth models were selected for estimation of root fresh weight and non-linear regression analysis was conducted. The allometric growth model, which have a variable multiplied by square of maximum leaf length and maximum leaf width, showed highest R2 values of 0.67, 0.70, and 0.49 for red beets, sugar beets, and turnips, respectively. Validation results of the models for red beets and sugar beets showed the R2 values of 0.63 and 0.65, respectively. However, the model for turnips showed the R2 value of 0.48. The allometric growth model was suitable for estimating the root fresh weight of red beets and sugar beets, but the accuracy for turnips was relatively low. CONCLUSION: The regression models established in this study may be useful to estimate the total production of root vegetables cultivated in reclaimed land, and it will be used as a non-destructive method for prediction of crop information.

In this study, a pull-out strength increasement of grasses was tested in field and the relationship between a weight of root and pull-out strength was established. The tested grasses were commmon reed, reed and sedge which were cultivated by mat-type like turf and used for revegetation of bank. The shear stress of soil at a section can be discribed as a function of root area and pull-out strength, therefore the result of this study will be used as a foundational data for reinforcing the shear stress of the revegetated bank. The heavier weight of root increased, the stronger shear stress was for all grasses. But the relationship between the weight and the shear stress were different by a kind of grass. The difference between common reed, sedge and reed is due to difference of growth and propagation. A reed propagates by subterranean stem and a root weight and pull-out strength are linearly increased by root and growth of subterranean stem.
Increased nitrogen fertilization increased root respiration and top dry weight of rice plant, and increased phosphorus fertilization increased root respiration only with the same amount of nitrogen applied. The effect of phosphorus on root respiration under low growth temperature was not significant and the large application of phosphorus alone decreased root respiration greatly. Root respiration per unit root weight correlated highly with top dry weight and nutrient uptake.
