Weather Conditions Drive the Damage Area Caused by Armillaria Root Disease in Coniferous Forests across Poland

  • Armillaria root disease affects forests around the world. It occurs in many habitats and causes losses in the infested stands. Weather conditions are important factors for growth and development of Armillaria species. Yet, the relation between occurrence of damage caused by Armillaria disease and weather variables are still poorly understood. Thus, we used generalized linear mixed models to determine the relationship between weather conditions of current and previous year (temperature, precipitation and their deviation from long-term averages, air humidity and soil temperature) and the incidence of Armillaria-induced damage in young (up to 20 years old) and older (over 20 years old) coniferous stands in selected forest districts across Poland. We used unique data, gathered over the course of 23 years (1987-2009) on tree damage incidence from Armillaria root disease and meteorological parameters from the 24-year period (1986-2009) to reflect the dynamics of damage occurrence and weather conditions. Weather parameters were better predictors of damage caused by Armillaria disease in younger stands than in older ones. The strongest predictor was soil temperature, especially that of the previous year growing season and the current year spring. We found that temperature and precipitation of different seasons in previous year had more pronounced effect on the young stand area affected by Armillaria. Each stand's age class was characterized by a different set of meteorological parameters that explained the area of disease occurrence. Moreover, forest district was included in all models and thus, was an important variable in explaining the stand area affected by Armillaria.

  • As landscaping building roofs and concrete structures increase gradually for low carbon green growth policy of government, But waterproofing membranes of those structures are effecting by root penetration of landscape plant. 80, we progressed study about test method for fast evaluating root resistance of waterproofing materials jointly with Tokyo Institute of Technology. The result of the study is as follows: (1) The penetrating load of the needle at the displacement speed of 1mm/min was measured for various membrane to basis and lap joints of membrane, the load force was $3{\sim}50$ N by material variously. (2) According to the test method of deriving rhizomes of bamboo grass to basis and lap joints of membrane, there were no penetrated membrane until present, but need persistent observation. (3) Test method of deriving rhizomes of bamboo grass to basis and lap joints of membrane can shorten from period of 2 years to 1 year for testing. Because rhizomes of bamboo grass can grow from May to September, test is possible in same period.

Dento-maxillofacial Abnormalities Caused by Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy

  • A case of dento-maxillofacial abnormality involving a 10-year-old male patient with a history of esthesioneuro-blastoma is presented. This patient had been treated with 54 Gy /sup 60/Co-gamma-radiation to the nasal cavity for 6 weeks and 6 cycles of combination chemotherapy of Cyclophosphamide, Cisplatin, Adriamycin, VM-26 (Tenipo-side), and DTIC (Dacarbazine) when he was 16 months of age. Five years after cessation of cancer therapy, he was disease free and transferred for extensive dental care to Kyung Hee University Dental Hospital. A clinical and radiologic follow-up over last 4 years showed root stunting, premature closure of the root apices, microdontia, developmental arrest, small crowns, and partial anodontia. Maxillofacial morphology evaluated by cephalometric analysis showed deficiency of maxillary development.

노인의 생존백세장수지표에 미치는 건강요인의 영향력 (Influence of Health Factors on the Longevity Index in Korean Centenarians)

  • Objectives: The aim of this paper is to analyze the heath factors for longevity index of survival rate in Korean centenarians, which contribute to longevity. Methods: The subjects of this paper included 996 centenarians in 276 regions of Korea that the data in this study was collected from the National Statistical Office, Republic of Korea in 2005. This paper that proposes indicators as follow: The ratio between the longevity index above 100 years old (100LI) and the survival rate above 65 years old (65SR): 100LISR. The study that examined the longevity factors that between 100LISR and health factors. Results: The results of this study showed that Gyeryong City (23 per 10,000 above 65 years old) included the most of 100LISR in Korea, followed by Cheju Island. The regression showed that significant predictors for longevity (100LISR) were non-drinking, non-smoking, garlic and root vegetable and elderly people are suffering serious health problems, they need caregivers for elderly care (R-Sq(%)=83.9, P=0.001). The correlation showed that significant factors as longevity were Sulfur dioxide (r=-0.677, p=0.004). Conclusion: The implications of this study are that longevity is to be fostered by promoting healthy behaviors of elderly and by inventing various policies to mitigate the environmental pollution.

Relationships Between Soil-Borne Virus Infection and Root Growth Damage in Korean Hulless Barley Cultivars

  • Viral infections and root growth were examined to elucidate the relationship between viral resistance and root growth in 26 Korean hulless barley cultivars. Viral resistance was estimated in experimental filed of Honam agricultural research institute for 3 years. Length and number of seminal and adventitious roots were examined for evaluation of root growth in both field and green-house conditions 30 days after seeding. Dominant viral infection occurred in Korean hulless barley by Barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) in fields; however, susceptible cultivars were infected by either BaYMV, Barley mild mosaic virus (BaMMV) or both. Only four cultivars, including Donghanchalssalbori, Kwangwhalssalbori, Namhossalbori and Naehanssalbori, presented stable resistance to viral infections. Susceptible cultivars to viral infection in fields showed shorter seminal root length and fewer adventitious root number than resistant cultivars. Resistant cultivars showed better root growth and significant difference in adventitious root length in green house conditions. Increase in the number of seminal roots in resistant cultivars was derived from decreased damage of roots by the viral infection compared to the susceptible cultivars.

교정치료시 발생하는 미완성 치근의 길이와 형태변화 (The changes of root length and form in immature teeth after orthodontic treatment)

  • 교정치료에 대한 인지도 변화 및 보호자의 관심증가로 조기에 내원하는 환자가 많으며 그 중 일부가 전치부 치근첨이 완성되기 전인 10세 이전에 고정식 교정장치가 필요하게 된다 따라서 본 연구에서는 미완성 치근의 치료 전후 치근의 길이 변화를 측정하고 형태변화를 관찰하여 완성된 치근의 교정력에 의한 변화양상과 비교하고, 환자의 성별, 기간, 이동양상 등과의 연관성을 조사하였다. 상악의 전치부 치근첨이 완성되지 않은 상태에서 고정식 교정치료를 시작한 8~10세 환자 28명을 실험군으로 하고, 치근첨이 완성된 상태에서 고정식 교정치료를 시작한 11~15세 환자 31명을 대조군으로 삼았다. 상악 4전치의 치료 전후 치근단 방사선사진상에서 치관, 치근길이를 측정해서, 치근길이의 변화량, 치관/치근 비의 변화량을 계산했고 분류체 계에 따라 치근형태에 점수를 부여했다. 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 대부분의 미완성 치근은 교정치료 후에도 치근 길이가 증가하였으며 정상적인 치근첨 형태를 보였다. 2. 치료기간이 길어지거나 개방교합의 경우, 미완성 치근이라도 치근길이가 증가하지 않거나 더 짧아진 경우도 있었으며 정상적인 길이가 되더라도 치근첨의 완성 형태가 뭉툭한 흡수 형태를 보였다. 3. 완성치근에서는 교정치료에 의하여 대부분의 치근이 경미한 치근흡수를 보였으며, 흡수된 치근첨의 형태는 미완성 치근의 완성형태보다 더 뭉툭하였다(p<0.05). 4, 미완성 치근에서는 치료기간과, 완성치근에서는 치아의 이동거리(U1 to facial plane의 변화량)와 유의한 상관관계를 보였다(P<0.05). 5. 미완성 치근, 완성치근 모두 성별, 부정교합 분류, 수직피개의 변화량, 두개저에 대한 치아의 위치 변화(U1 to SN의 변화량)등과는 유의한 상관관계를 보이지 않았다.

Cavity preparation and amalgam filling on the carious lesion were performed and the flap was sutured.

  • Newly sprouted American ginseng (Panax quinquefolium L.) seedlings were transplanted to forest pots with mycorrhizae-infested soil and grown in screenhouse for 2 years. Growth patterns, mortality rate and fresh root weight were investigated. Plants in VAM soil had lower mortality rales than control. In soils infested with two species of mycorrhizal fungi (Glomu deseyicola, frappe, Bloss and Merge and G. intraradices, Schenck and Smith), 28-35% of plants produced 3-prongs in the second season and significantly increased fresh root weight by 41 to 43%.

Impact of Periodontal Treatment and Demographic and Socioeconomic Factors on Tooth Loss in Persons with Disabilities: An Analysis of Korean National Health Insurance Claims Data

  • Background: This study aimed to analyze the effects of periodontal treatment and individual- and tooth-related factors on tooth extraction in people with disabilities. Methods: The Korea National Health Insurance claims data of individuals with disabilities aged 40~64 years with chronic periodontitis in 2008 were obtained. Of these, data on the disabled who underwent scaling/root plaining, subgingival curettage/periodontal surgery, or non-periodontal treatments, and data on their teeth were selected. The extraction of 716,688 teeth from 39,097 patients was tracked until 2018, and the patient- and tooth-level factors related to tooth loss were identified using a mixed-effect logistic regression analysis. Results: Data from approximately 17% of the teeth were extracted during a follow-up period of approximately 11 years. Among the tooth-level variables, scaling/root planing treatment at baseline and periodontal treatment during the follow-up period were associated with a lower risk of tooth loss (odds ratio=0.692 and 0.769, respectively, p<0.001). Non-vital teeth increased the risk of tooth loss by 3.159 times (p<0.001). Among the patient-level variables, females were less likely to have lost their teeth than males, and those with orthopedic impairment or brain lesions/mental disabilities, a higher age group, lower income level, or residents in medium/small cities or rural areas were more likely to have lost their teeth (p<0.001). Conclusion: Through approximately 11 years of follow-up, scaling or root planing, experience with periodontal treatment at least once, female sex, older age, lower income, smaller residential areas, type of disability, and pulp vitality were found to be associated with tooth loss in individuals with disabilities aged 40~64 years with chronic periodontitis. To prevent tooth loss in individuals with disabilities, it is necessary to establish a dental treatment plan that considers the timing of periodontal treatment and the characteristics of the patient and teeth.

Screening rhizobacteria for biological control of root rot and Phytophthora blight on glnseng.

  • Ginseng (Panax ginseng) is one of the most widely cultivated medicinal herbs in Korea. During 3 or 5 years cultivation of ginseng, yield losses can reach as high as 30-60% due to numerous diseases in Korea. Among 106 Bacillus strains isolated from various plant internal roots, we selected three promising biocontrol agents by screening against root rot caused by Cylindrocarpon destructan in a greenhouse. Preinoculation of selected isolates to seed or one-year-old root resulted in stimulation of shoot and/or root growth of seedlings, and control of root rot in infested soils with Cylindronrpon destructans (P=0.05). Furthermore, drenching of selected isolates on seedling-growing pots reduced the incidence of Phytophthora blight when the seedlings were challenged with zoospores of Phytophthora cactorum (P=0.05). However, isolates B1141 and B1142 did not show any antifungal activity against various soilborne pathogens while B1146 did in vitro. Our results provide an insight that rhizobacteria can induce resistance against various plant diseases on ginseng even if any resistant breeds have been unknown on ginseng yet.
