The chemical components in different parts such as seed, cotyledon, hull, pod, leaf, stem and root of Korean sword bean(Canavalia gladiata) were determined in this study. The contents of total sugar and protein were relatively higher in cotyledon than other parts. The highest mineral component was K, Ca in root and leaf, respectively. In case of organic acids, relatively higher content of oxalic acid(2,556 mg%), citric acid(573 mg%) was found in leaf and pod, respectively. Among free sugars, the contents of sucrose(3.80%), fructose(2.17%) were the highest contents in hull and stem, respectively. The highest component total amino acids in cotyledon and leaf, pod, stem, and root was glutamic acid(592 mg%), glutamic acid(429 mg%), proline(497 mg%), lysine(328 mg%) and arginine(714 mg%), respectively. Among fatty acids in hull and pod, palmitic acid(32.75%, 21.93%) was high in saturated fatty acid fraction, while linoleic acid(39.15%, 43.03%) was high in polyunsaturated fatty acid fraction.
The relationship between source leaf position and photo-assimilate translocation and distribution was characterized for tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) grown in the greenhouse. Three different positions of source leaf on the stem (first node above or below the first fruit cluster and $5^{th}$ node above the first fruit cluster) were tested for their influence on $^{14}CO_2$ assimilation and transfer to different parts of the plant. The leaves at the $5^{th}$ node above the first fruit cluster transferred the highest (57%) proportion of $C^{14}$ to other plant parts, followed by leaves home on the first node below the first fruit cluster (50%), and the first node above the first fruit cluster (39%). In all treatments, fruits served as the strongest sink for $C^{14}$, followed by stem, leaf, and root tissues. The leaf home on the $5^{th}$ node above the first fruit cluster transferred the largest amount of $C^{14}$ to the second fruit cluster.

In order to use the excellent features of saponin and phenolic compounds in the leaf and fruit of ginseng, ginseng fruit Yakgwa (GFY), ginseng leaf Yakgwa (GLY) and ginseng root Yakgwa (GRY) were made via adding the fruit, leaf and root powder in the process of making Yakgwa, and the properties were investigated. When making Yakgwa, GFY and GLY had superior expansion compared to GRY. 2.5-GFY (added 2.5% ginseng fruit powder) and 2.5-GLY (added 2.5% ginseng leaf powder) increased about 1.68 times and had better expansion than the control; however, when more amount of fruit and leaf were added, the expansion was decreased. The GFY and GLY showed green and red color, and the brightness and yellowness were decreased. Oil absorption during making Yakgwa showed to increase as the amount of fruit and leaf powder were increased regardless of the ginseng parts. Hardness of Yakgwa increased as the root additives were increased, and it decreased when leaf and fruit were added. The results of sensory evaluation on ginseng-based Yakgwa showed that oily taste was lowered as the amount of fruit and leaf additives were increased, which had increased the preference. On the overall preference of Yakgwa, 5.0-GFY, 2.5-GLY and 7.5-GRY was high, which contained 2.30 mg/g, 1.02 mg/g, and 0.91 mg/g of saponin, respectively.
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of shading on the growth of 1 -year-old seedlings of Cornus controversa. The height growth was highest in relative light intensities of 100% and 50%, but relative growth rate in 50% was higher than that in 100% treatment. The growth did not occur under 9% relative light intensity. The root collar diameter growth at different light intensities is similar to height growth. The leaf area was highest in 50% relative light intensity, and the leaf area under the light intensity was small compared with the control. SLA and LAI of seedlings increased with decreasing relative light intensity. The LAR and LWR of seedlings increased with decreasing light intensity, but LWR decreased at 9% relative light intensity. The dry weight of root, stem, leaf and branch, and the number of branch and leaf decreased with decreasing relative light intensity. T/R ratio was highest in 17% and 30% relative light intensity. Lateral root growth decreased with decreasing light intensity except for that in 50% light intensity.
Iris dichotoma Pall. is an important endangered plant belonging to the family Iridaceae. A method was developed for the rapid micropropagation of I. dichotoma through plant regeneration from leaf, rhizome, and root explant-derived calli. Leaf, rhizome, and root segments were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D; $0-3.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) for callus induction. Callus production was highest at $1.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ 2,4-D, where 73.8% and 45.5% of cultured rhizome and root cuttings, respectively, produced calli. The viable calli were maintained at an induced concentration of 2,4-D ($3.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$). They were then transferred to MS medium supplemented with various concentrations of 2,4-D ($0-3.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) in combination with 6-benzyladenine (BA: 0, 1.0 and $3.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) for adventitious shoot regeneration. The addition of a low concentration of 2,4-D into BA-containing medium significantly increased the frequency of shoot regeneration in leaf, rhizome, and root-derived calli. The highest number of adventitious shoots (26.4 per callus) formed at $0.5mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ 2,4-D and 1.0 mg/l BA. For rooting of the shoots, half- strength MS medium supplemented with different concentrations of indole 3-butyric acid (IBA) $0-3.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ was tested. The optimal results were observed using half-strength MS medium supplemented with $1.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ IBA, on which 98% of the regenerated shoots developed roots with an average of 3.5 roots per shoot within 45 days. The plantlets raised in vitro were acclimatized and transferred to soil with 95% success. This in vitro propagation protocol will be useful for conservation and mass propagation of this endangered plant.
Disease is the major problem in ginseng cultivation from seed stratification, soil preparation prior to planting, right through to drying of the roots. There are many soil-borne disease pathogen in rhizosphere soil environment, furthermore occurrence of diseases by a diverse group of fungi and related organisms are closely related to various soil condition. Observable symptoms for soil-borne diseases include wilting, leaf death and leaf fall, death of branches and limbs and in severe cases death of the whole plant. The fungus Cylindrocarpon destructans is the cause of root rot characterized by a decay of the true root system in many ginseng production areas in Korea. Some pathogens are generally confined to the juvenile roots whilst others are capable of attacking older parts of the root system. However, the relation between the soil environmental characteristics and ginseng root rot by soil-borne disease pathogen is not clearly identified in ginseng field. In this paper, we reviewed soil-borne plant pathogen causing root rot disease of ginseng with respect to soil environment.
Two fertilizer levels were treated to the nine barley varieties developed at different years to investigate the morphological and physiological traits related to grain yields. Recently developed varieties were higher in amounts of chlorophyll and nitrogen content of leaf, root activity, root weight and specipic leaf weight as compared with older varieties. Dry matter production was closely related to NAR rather than LAI in new varieties, but indicating the reverse results in older varieties. They showed higher NAR and light transmission rate in new varieties but higher LAI in older varieties. Leaves in new varieties were distributed uniformly according to its position on clum. However, leaves in older varieties arranged irregularly showing more distribution at the upper and middle positions on culm. The factors which showed high correlations with grain yield were chlorophyll content, root activity, NAR, and nitrogen content of leaf of which stepwise multiple regression with grain yield indicated that 90% of total variance was occupied by chlorophyll content, root activity and dry matter.
Mechanical stimulation induce the morphological changes in plants. In this study, we investigated the growth changes of tomato seedlings applicated to mechanical stimulation. The brushing treatment was used for mechanical stimulation. The brushing treatment interval was 2 hr using transfer device attached acrylic film from 10 days after sowing. Growth parameter of tomato seedlings were measured 3-day intervals to investigate the growth changes during brushing treatment. The plant height and leaf area were decreased in brushing treatment than the control, and the fresh and dry weights of shoot didn't have significant difference in the control and brushing treatment. The total root length and root surface area were increased in brushing treatment compared than the control, and root volume has no significant difference in the control and brushing treatment. In conclusion, these results suggest that the application of brushing treatment on tomato seedling make shorten plant height and well-development root morphological characteristics.
To develop a new propagation method of Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) by cutting, stem cuttings with leaflets obtained from ginseng seedlings were planted in rooting media treated with three levels of NAA concentration. NAA solution of 1.0 ppm was the most effective for the rooting of ginseng stem cuttings as well as for root growth after initiation of the roots from cuttings. A mixture of sand and leaf compost as a rooting medium for ginseng stem cuttings showed the best results in rooting percentage of cuttings and root growth after rooting. An acril film cap covering was very effective to prevent water loss by transpiration from the leaflets of stem cuttings and for rooting and root growth after rooting. Cuttings of leaf petiole with 5 leaflets from 2 year old ginseng plants showed good rooting as well as root growth after rooting in a mixture of sand and leaf compost treated with 1.0 ppm NAA.
Recently, due to environmental and toxicity issues, there has been increasing attention on research regarding natural products that can reduce the use of chemical fertilizers. Wood extracts derived from the biorefining process contain various fertilizer ingredients. HPLC analysis revealed that wood extract contains approximately 5.2% hemicellulosic sugar. The growth of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) upon treatment with wood extract (extract obtained from steam-exploded pine) or water-soluble fertilizers containing different nutrients was analyzed in this study. After two weeks, the growth characteristics of lettuce as affected by wood extract or water-soluble fertilizers were significantly different. The effect of water-soluble fertilizers containing ascorbic acid, magnesium sulfate, citric acid, potassium nitrate, amino acids, or seaweed extract was less desirable than that of wood extracts regarding plant height (18.6 cm), number of leaves (10), leaf length (14.1 cm), shoot fresh wight (9.8 g/plant), root fresh weight (0.8 g/plant) and shoot dry weight (0.6 g/plant). The plant height, number of leaves, leaf length, shoot fresh wight, root fresh weight, shoot dry weight of water-soluble fertilizers containing wood extract were significantly different compared to the control (plant height :13.5 cm, number of leaves : 7, leaf length : 9.4 cm, shoot fresh wight : 5.3 g/plant, root fresh weight : 0.7 g/plant, shoot dry weight : 0.4 g/plant, root dry weight : 0.07 g/plant). From these results, it was concluded that wood extract can be used as a potential water-soluble fertilizer to increase the yield of leafy vegetables.
