  • Recently Ibadan in southwestern Nigeria has been facing severe water shortage due to the increase of population, social and economic activities. In order to meet the shortfall, attempts to utilize rainwater harvesting (RWH) have been made to provide an alternative source of water supply. A desk study was conducted to review various RWH technologies locally, regionally and globally. A hydrological analysis was also carried out using rainfall data for 30 years from two meteorological stations, with the aim of providing a more sustainable RWH system for water supply to private individuals, organizations, and government agencies. RWH is found to be technically feasible based on the prevailing rainfall pattern with over 90% of households having a rooftop constructed from technically appropriate materials. Results of the study indicate that an average roof of $80m^2$ will collect 82,835 L/yr (45 L/person/day) for a family of five people which is about the required water demand for drinking and cooking purposes. Hence, the capacity of storage tanks and the catchment area required for an all-purpose water supply system based on RWH are quite large. These can be reduced to affordable sizes, by collecting and storing water for cooking and drinking only while non-potable uses are supplemented by water from other sources. However, it must be highlighted that due to the type of roofing material, rainwater should go through proper treatment in order to be used for potable purposes. This study clearly shows that Ibadan city has a good rainwater harvesting potential.

  • Cool roofs are currently being emerged as one of important mechanism to save energy in relation to the building. This paper reviews worldwide experiences (USA, Japan and EU etc) for the potential benefits cool roofs offer in relation to building energy saving for comparison purposes. It is confirmed that there is a significant potential to the energy saving by introducing the cool roof in a Korean climate because of similarity in terms of HDD (Heating Degree Day) and CDD (Cooling Degree Day) as those countries reviewed. Such a comparative study highlights that the type of measurements performed and the quantitative parameters reported from the countries should be standardized in Korean context in order to implement further comparable experiments for scientifically sound investigations. It is anticipated that this research output could be used as a valuable reference in implementing a Nation-wide cool roofing strategy in the central and local governments since a suitable technical, more objective direction has been proposed based on the measured, fully quantitative performance of the involved components of a cool roof system in the global context. From this critical review, a very important step has been made concerning the practicality of cool roof in Korean context. Ultimately, the suggestion in this paper will greatly contribute to opening new possibilities for introducing cool roof in this country, proposed as an initial aim of this paper.

  • Asbestos has been used for roofing, walling and the like for the constructions since 60's~70's owing to its excellent fire resistance and heat insulative nature. However, it has banned to be used in major countries all over the world since WHO-affiliated International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) stipulated asbestos by a top carcinogen causing lung cancer, malignant mesothelioma and so on in 1986. Therefore, we had prohibited the use of asbestos on brakes for automobile since 2007 and on most of the products other than some cases of having no alternatives such as munitions from 2009. Nevertheless, diseases from asbestos have a long incubation period of 10~40 years, therefore, even if being exposed to asbestos, preliminary prevention is rather more important than instant possible damage as damages can be greater decades later. Accordingly, this thesis has a purpose to seek a plan in order to guarantee the rights of national health from harmfulness of asbestos by comparing and reviewing the policies on asbestos in advanced countries such as France, Japan, Netherlands and such like.

  • Work-related falls are a major problem in the construction and roofing industries. To avoid serious injury to the worker caused by high decelerations or forces, different systems to absorb the energy of a fall are implemented in personal protective equipment. In this study, shock energy absorber lanyard protection tube was prepared using high tenacity PET fiber, P-aramid fiber, and UHMWPE fiber, respectively. Dynamic load test and static load test, bursting strength test based on the Korea fall protection equipment standard(Korea Occupational Safety & Health Agency standard 2013-13) or conformity European safety test(CE : EN355) were conducted. Especially maximum arrest force by dynamic load test of energy absorber showed below 6,000N.

  • The purpose of this study is to reveal the characteristics of Kan as a compositional unit in relation with its usage, building base, structural system, and roofing system in Seo Baek Dang and Gwan Ga Jeong. The results are as follows: Seo Baek Dang and Gwan Ga Jeong share a common characteristics: Kan module forms the plan to be 1:1 in shape and enables flexibility in usage and regularity in compositional aspect. In Seo Baek Dang, there are active level differences in base, room floor levels and column heights to achieve intended roof design while minimizing the deviation of module (500 mm) of four sides enclosing the an-madang (inner courtyard) and, in Gwan Ga Jeong, instead of differentiating levels, maximizing the module control (up to 1,560 mm) and lowering the roof slope are found. They are regarded resulting in a rather plane manner. Through a comparative analysis, it is found out that these two houses have a common characteristics of Kan to form a quadrate plan while they have differences both in conceptual and tectonic manner that is 'how to build a house' in similar conditions of region, period and society. In addition, Kan as a module is clarified to have a relative value that regulates both structural and aesthetical aspects.

  • It has been a very hard problem to reduce solids especially suspended solids (SS) in recirculating aquaculture systems. Present description is based on the performance of trapping SS by the biofilter of Intensive Bio-production Korean (IBK) system which is originally developed for nitrification. We found out that this filter has an excellent capability to remove SS in addition to nitrification. Filter element used here is corrugated plastic roofing plates readily available in the market, and cheaper than specially developed and patented products. It is easy to maintain the system, and requires low power consumption to operate for the treatment of a large amount of water. With 2 pumps of 5 hp each, about 500 $m^3$ of water is treated per hour. Flow speed in the filter was 2.6 mm/sec on average. This low flow speed and very large amount of water treated are the reasons for very effective trapping of fine SS. Upon single pass through this filter, 74.5% of total SS and 40% of non-settleable SS were removed. Wherever this filter is employed in recirculating fish farms water keeps high clarity, this having also been empirically ascertained.

  • Buildings are responsible for approximately 50% of current carbon dioxide emissions. Energy planning at a town and city scale needs a strategic approach, supported by strong planning policies. The purpose of this study was to investigate the urban scale grid-connected photovoltaic(PV) system for urban residential and commercial sector applications. The integration of PV technology into roof of houses is an approach that is being championed in Germany, Japan and United states etc. In the Korea, PV roofing systems already are given the large number of houses which are projected to be built by 2012. However unlike germany and Japan, urban scale grid-connected PV system is not yet installed. The solar city which is installed building-integrated photovoltaic system is available to use of renewable energy sources such as solar to meet demand, instead of fossil fuels, with the goal of realizing an ecologically oriented energy supply.

  • Recently, the interest is increased rapidly about the New Hanok as contemporary house. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to recognize New Hanok as valuable things, which represents traditionality of urban, and to seek how it can be developed as contemporary house. This research analyze the characteristics of New Hanok is built since 2000. The result are as followings. First, many contemporary architects used only the roofing tiles and traditional Hanok elevation design as the design vocabulary of New Hanok. In future, the design vocabulary of New Hanok must be developed variously. Secondly, the construction of New Hanok is possible from the land of minimum $100m^2$ in a city can be found. Thirdly, as a result of having analyzed at the form and the spatial side, it has been analyzed that New Hanok can be divided into 3 types in the form side, which is 'the transfiguration of format', 'the motive borrowing of traditional elements', 'the vertical extension and reconstruction'. In the spatial side, it has been analyzed that New Hanok can be divided into 3 types, which is 'the center of Madang', 'the integration of circulation', 'the transfiguration of design principle'. Lastly, The contemporary architects were analyzed into having a thought that New Hanok must maintain an appearance of Hanok.

  • Stainless steels have been widely used as a building exterior materials in Asian countries for the last decade. It is required for the materials in this field to have an aesthetic appearance, a relatively high strength, and an excellent corrosion resistance. Other metallic materials such as copper, aluminum, and carbon steels have been also used as the exterior materials. Considering the cost of maintenance, stainless steel, having the outstanding corrosion resistance, is replacing other materials in the several parts in the building exteriors. Ferritic stainless steel has been applied as the roofing materials because its thermal expansion is much smaller than that of austenitic stainless steel. Therefore, it is suitable for the large-scale construction such as airport terminal, convention center, and football stadium. To improve the corrosion resistance of the ferritic stainless steels, the modification of alloy composition has been studied to develop new grade materials and the progress in the surface technology has been introduced. Corrosion properties of these materials were evaluated in the laboratory and in the field for longer than two years. High-Cr ferritic stainless steel showed excellent corrosion resistance to the atmospheric environments. In the region close to the sea, the corrosion resistance of high-Cr ferritic stainless steel was much superior to that of other materials, which may prove this steel to be the appropriate materials for the construction around seashore. In some of the large constructions around seashore in South Korea, high-Cr ferritic stainless steels have been used as the building exterior materials for six years.
