Among many artifacts donated by Yoo Chang-jong, we duplicated and performed conservation treatment for a colored brick(J3432), a roof tile with monster-mask design(J1886) and a mould for roof tiles with monster-mask design(J1882). We focused on the restoration of the paint layer for the colored brick. As for the roof tile with monster-mask design, we cleared the existing poorly repaired part and then performed a complete conservation treatment. We would like to present the process to duplicate a roof tile with monster-mask design using a real mould, for the special exhibition entitled "Donated Tiles of Yoo Chang-jong".
Roofing tile research conducted in Korea so far is mostly related to studies on roofing tile patterns excavation report on the roof tile klin site in the aspects of archeology architecture and history of art. There have been continuous studies on kiln ground and manufacture techniques of roofing tiles. However it is difficult to find roofing tiles research based on scientific experiments. The research on this paper performs physical and chemical experimental study to understand order, manufacturing techniques and other characteristics of Chosun Dynasty roofing tiles excavated in Dongdaemun stadium. As for physical experimental study water absorption, specific gravity, whole-rock Magnetic susceptibility rate and Differential Thermal Analysis are conducted. As for chemical experimental study, neutron activation analysis(NAA), microstructure observation, X-ray diffractometry(XRD) analysis are conducted. Result of neutron activation analysis and statistical analysis on piece of roof tile 22 samples clearly show that the roofing tile samples are from different time line and places. It also shows different composition when compare average value of rare earth resources per findspots. It means roofing tiles were manufactured from clay mineral from several places. Close inspection using XRD and polarization microscope reveals that main components of roofing tiles are quartz and felspar. Mica and Illite are found partially. XRD analysis shows mullite mineral composition which occurs when roofing tile is calcined around $1000^{\circ}C$. Differential thermal analysis shows gradual exothermic peak near $900^{\circ}C$. Based on these results, it is assumed that roofing tile is made at $900{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$. result of XRD analysis shows mullite were made near $1000^{\circ}C$. in Differential Thermal Analysis shows gradual exothermic peak near $900^{\circ}C$. this results shows that roof tiles were made near 900~1000 near $1000^{\circ}C$ mean value of whole-rock Magnetic susceptibility rate. When performed comparative analysis using whole-rock Magnetic susceptibility rate average value, findspots provided no certain classification to arrange. Nonetheless low whole-rock Magnetic susceptibility rate 0.2~0.78(${\times}103$ SI unit) is found when roofing tile patterns are Pasangmun, Taesangmun, Eosangmun, Kyukjamun, Heongsunmun. Overall absorptivity is 14~21%. It is similar to 14~18% of roofing tile from Chosun Dynasty. There is only 1.4~2.5g/cm3 of roof tile sample specific gravity. The analysis finds no difference in specific gravity by findspots.
The purpose of this study is to analogize the appearance of Korean Ancient Architecture in view of the Stone Remains from 3 Kingdom Period to Unificated Shilla Period. But in these period, there is no building remains but some stupas and fine arts. Especially, there are many architectural appearance and revealing signature in these Historical Stone remains. Architectural elements which are analogized by stone remains what has value as historical materials by preservation of original form from 3 Kingdom Preiod to Unificated Shilla Period are as follows : 1) Platform, the representative characteristic of Korean traditional architecture, was frame structure and accumulate structure. And circular or square footing stood a same shape column on it is put on the platform. 2) In the case of column, there used entasis column and inclined column and circular chamfer technique was applied on the top side of it. Upper side of column, capital and head pentrating tie that small bearing block was put on the center of it was joined. And longitu야nal rest(長舌) supported a cross beam. Capital and small bearing block had no bottom heel, and heel side was curved and straight. Centered bracket structure was often used, and multi bracket structure is not used yet. Inward incline technique was used. 3) Inward opening pair door which had lintel, threshold, doorjamb was usually used, Fixing stone was used for structural safety, and circular handle and lock was used for decoration. Handrail was used on the edge of wooden floor for decorative effect and safety. 4) Square rafter and circular rafter were used in the same period and so did flying rafter. Double eaves and single eave were used in the same period but, single eave was usually used. In this period, square rafter was usually used. This would be studied more by comparing with Japanese wooden architecture. 5) Hipped roof was used and half-hipped roof was not used yet. In front of th hip, there are small sculpture called Jap-Sang(雜像), and windbell was hang on the end of the hip rafter. Concave roof tile, convex roof tile, round eaver tile, decorative tile at end of roof ridge were used. Lotus style was well used on the face of roof tile for decoration. From the results of this study, wooden architecture of Unificated Shilla period was simple compare to Koryo dynasty and Chosun dynasty but, it had some brilliant character. It was hard work that analogized the form of non-existent wood architecture of Ancient Korean period by restricted stone remains. But, in addition to the results of this study and research of old documentations, more study should be go on.
Stamped-Roof Tiles, the characteristics of Baekje Tiles are one of the most frequently excavated tiles in Iksan. Considering the types and amount of excavation of the Stamped-Roof Tiles unearthed in Iksan area, it seems that these are closely related with a Royal family. The tiles might be manufactured by a particular gorup of file maker since they are produced with same way. Referring the Ganji carved in the Stamped-Roof Tiles, I suppose that the tiles were produced and used in two time periods, the time around enthronement of The King Mu and the second quarter of the 7th century around Gichuk, AD. 629. In addition, Convex Tiles used in Wanggung-ri Site and Mireuk Site was also produced in same time as the Stamped-Roof Tiles, considering there pattern and the amount of excavation. The social background of tile production was analogized based on the technology and the time of the tile manufacture as well as the characteristics of the Stamped-Roof Tiles which represent the Obu and the Ohang. The production of the tiles was supported by Obu which aided the King Mu-oriented construction project the economic capacity of the Royal family was not enough to promote. The tile production system was totally controled by the Royal family and the inspector, neither producer nor donator, examined the quantitation of the tiles and generated the imprint of a seal with the Stamped-Roof Tiles.

The result can be summarized as follows. First, the following periodically changing characteristics were examined:roof form(gambrel/hipped-flat-gable), structure of roof and wall(wood-framed-cement masonry-RC-Light iron framed), roof material(thatched-tiled-slate-cement/steel sheet-asphalt/sandwich panel/mortar water-proofing), wall material(clay plaster/lime plastered-dressing tile/bricks-painting on the cement plastering-native stone dressing/siding/tile), fence material(masonry of stone and cement bricks), and courtyard materials(clay and concrete). Secondly, the regionally changing characteristics of those elements, rural housing structure, roof form, roof structure material, wall finishing material, fence and courtyard material in the outer space, differed according to the location of rural housing, i.e.north, middle, south region. The changing characteristics of both the roof structure and wall structure are similar to those of the three regions.

This study examined ornamental metals used as architectural members among metal artifacts excavated from ancient Buddhist temples and palaces in Korea. Through this, we approached the decorative characteristics of ancient architecture eaves. 1. The decorations used in eaves of Korean ancient architecture include roof-end tiles and ornamental metal. Through excavation examples, the technique of attaching ornamental metal to the rafters and corner rafters of high-ranking architectures in the 7th and 8th centuries (ornamental metal for rafter end, ornamental metal for corner rafter end), and tosu iron in the 10th century It seems to be fashionable. 2. Several buildings were built in ancient Buddhist temples and palaces. At this time, they differentiated ornamental metal according to the hierarchy of the building. The higher the hierarchy, the greater the difference in the number of ornamental metal installations, materials, and decoration techniques. In addition, ornamental metal used in eaves is an important factor in the discrimination of the times as the type, number of members, and patterns change depending on the era. 3. The great feature of the eaves metal decoration excavated in the 7th and 8th centuries is the attachment of ornamental metal to the rafters and horsetails. This seems to create a sense of grandeur by removing the weight of the roof and giving the impression constructed regardless of gravity by supporting it with non-material materials.
Centering around ruins recognized of being relatively early stage related to flat tile and brick, excavated in Silla capital area, the study attempted elementary approach to seek the appearance time of every remain through comparing them from the excavated cases and production methods of Short beating, Medium beating plate, Long beating plate and Stamped-roof tile. Gyeongju began to use the short beating plate made of tile-less plates or tile plate and increased its quantity. That is deemed to be due to efficiency of beating plate making methods, and moreover to be limited only for use in the palace castle and offices. That is, making short beating plates is presumed to be made merely under some definite objectives. Medium beating plate has been spread to the whole country since Silla and Baekje united. Differently from Koguryo and Baekje, Silla had its unique Beating-plates making technology available for mass-production, which was spread to the whole country and resulted in disappearing of Koguryo and Baekje technology. Long beating plate was not nearly founded in Gyeongju area, but flat tile and common tile excavated in Sachunwang Temple site and Samrang Temple 3rd remains are known. In the outskirts of Gyeongju, long beating plate appeared between the latter half of 8C and the beginning of 9C. Until now, different views have raised to appearance of long beating plate of Unified Silla, which is expected to be clarified under the situation excavated by position relations. Stamped-roof title in Gyeongju is estimated as used after the datum point year 679. While in Baekje area, five stems and branches were involved, in Silla area, code or sign was shown much. The difference between two areas would be due to each other factory, and especially the marked contents werenot letters, which means it had been changed from Baekje s existing-methods. That is, it says the production environment changed owing to Silla's merging. And stamped-roof tile was temporarily used in Gyeongju but soon disappeared, which was because Silla beating plates made under cylinder-shaped tile barrel(圓筒瓦桶) and hitting-pressing of Medium beating plate had beenspread to the whole country, so the production technology of Koguryo and Baekje was naturally dismissed. In consequence, the mergence by Silla brought about unification of each nation's special technology.
Purpose: This study was on the economic feasibility of BIPV system, focused on comparison with construction cost of BAPV system depend on roof finishing materials, and to suggest basic data on the construction cost. Method: Construction cost of BAPV system was calculated, by selecting asphalt single, flat type roof tile, color steel plate, titanium zinc plate as roof finishing material of residential building and by sum up each cost for roof finishing construction and cost for 3kWp-volumed PV module installation. Also, the economic feasibility was analysed quantitatively by comparing the cost for BIPV system construction, installing same volumed PV module instead of roof finishing materials. Result: 1. By installing BIPV system instead of the roof finishing material, the cost of construction falls ; about 19% in case of the titanium zinc plate, which is the most expensive, and about 11% in case of the color steel plate. 2. Reducing amount of the construction cost gets larger because of installing BIPV module instead of the roof finishing material, as the construction cost for roof finishing material gets higher ; therefore, it is more economical than BAPV system in terms of whole cost of construction.
Recent major post-hurricane damage assessments in the United States have reported that the most common damages result from the loss of building roof coverings and subsequent wind driven rain intrusion. In an effort to look further into this problem, this paper presents a full-scale (Wall of Wind --WoW--) investigation of external and underneath wind pressures on roof tiles installed on a low-rise building model with various gable roofs. The optimal dimensions for the low-rise building that was tested with the WOW are 2.74 m (9 ft) long, 2.13 m (7 ft) wide, and 2.13 m (7 ft) high. The building is tested with interchangeable gable roofs at three different slopes (2:12; 5:12 and 7:12). The field tiles of these gable roofs are considered with three different tile profiles namely high (HP), medium (MP), and low profiles (LP) in accordance with Florida practice. For the ridge, two different types namely rounded and three-sided tiles were considered. The effect of weather block on the "underneath" pressure that develops between the tiles and the roof deck was also examined. These tests revealed the following: high pressure coefficients for the ridge tile compared to the field tiles, including those located at the corners; considerably higher pressure on the gable end ridge tiles compared to ridge tiles at the middle of the ridge line; and marginally higher pressure on barrel type tiles compared to the three-sided ridge tiles. The weather blocking of clay tiles, while useful in preventing water intrusion, it doesn't have significant effect on the wind loads of the field tiles. The case with weather blocking produces positive mean underneath pressure on the field tiles on the windward side thus reducing the net pressures on the windward surface of the roof. On the leeward side, reductions in net pressure to a non-significant level were observed due to the opposite direction of the internal and external pressures. The effect of the weather blocking on the external pressure on the ridge tile was negligible.
This study deals with the contemporary rural housing with special reference to the roof types/materials and the outer wall materials in Ulleungdo Mountains. The most frequent roof type of rural housing is the hip-and-gable roof type(42.1%); and the next, the gable roof type(25.8%). For the roof materials, the precoated steel plate(69.1%), the asphalt shingle(11.8%), and the cement(10.7%) are the most frequent but the roofing tile and the artificial slate are not used. And for the outer wall materials, the cement(27.5%), the siding(21.3%), the corrugated galvanized iron(16.8%), and the lumber sheet(6.7%) are the most frequent. It is the hip-and-gable roof housing type with the precoated steel plate(roof materials)(41%), or the hip-and-gable roof housing type with the precoated steel plate(roof materials) and the cement(outer wall material) (18.0%) that is the most frequent type of rural housing in Ulleungdo Mountains. For the roof/wall materials, the ratio of the corrugated galvanized iron is high probably due to the relatively low cost of transport, and the ratio of the roofing tile, the artificial slate, the red brick, and the building stone is very low probably due to the relatively high cost of transport.
