Until now, most studies regarding stone pagodas of the Honam region have been about stone pagodas with Baekje style because it was the territory of Baekje. However, after reviewing the designated cultural properties, I found that among the 94 stone pagodas in the Honam region there are 15 stone pagodas with Baekje style built in the Goryeo Dynasty and 34 stone pagodas with Silla style. So far, most research efforts have been concentrating on stone pagodas with Baekje style. Through a review of stone pagodas with Silla style, I sought to reveal new aspects of the pagodas in the Honam region. After reviewing the placement of pagodas, I found stone pagodas with Silla style were built mostly in South Jeolla Province during the Unified Silla period. However, in the Goryeo Dynasty stone pagodas with Silla style were erected throughout the Honam region. This shows enhanced Buddhist control over the Honam region than in the previous period. It can be verified especially in Gimje, Jeongeup, Sunchang, Damyang, Yeongam, and Gangjin, where stone pagodas with Baekje style and stone pagodas with Silla style coexist. The types of stone pagodas with Silla style in the Honam region can be divided into two. There are 21 pagodas with two-story foundation, and 12 with single foundation. They seem to have inherited characteristics of the two-story foundation of Silla pagodas. Two pagodas with single foundation were made of a single rock or natural rock for lower foundation. Regarding the body of the pagoda, there are 21 three-story pagodas and 12 five-story pagodas. 25 pagodas have first floors made of a single rock. These are likely to be in the tradition of Silla pagodas. However, the lower part of the roof stones vary as there are three, four, or five-tiered ones. Overall, 12 out of 16 pagodas with middle column in foundation, and 15 out of 21 three-story pagodas are located in South Jeolla Province. This proves that stone pagodas in the South Jeolla Province well maintained the tradition of Silla and became popular.
The lastest art is being characterised by an ever active exchange between different genre. This is a study on the installation aspect in deconstruction architectured and interior design. The progressive and aggressive nature of installatation art embodies uncatagorized genre, the freedom of material application, introduction of the notion of time in space, the reversion of subject and object, the union of art and every experience, understanding of object through deconstruction, enlargement of concept of space, collage-style composition and layer technique. I can conclude that the installation aspect in Tshumi's Parc de la Villette is its call upon the audience to actively participate, the introduction of a coincidental conjunction, its challenge on the conventional idea of park and its flexibility caused by human activity and time. In Hadid's Hong Kong Peak Club the installation aspect is the application of layer technique using four enormous beams horizontally laid out on a man-made moutain. Furthermore, Libeskind's pursuit of the mental in Berlin Museum Extension through the penetration of an invisible line into a void creates a new interpretation of the role of a museum and thus relates itself to installation art. The installation aspect in Himmelblau's Vienna Roof Renovation is the literal deconstruction of the roof of an old building in the old section of Wien and the expression of time and space through the interrelationship between interior and exterior environment by the use of juxtaposition technique. Finally, I note that the installation aspect in Gehry's Santa Monica Residence is the reorganization of cheap material as a form of 'object', that creates spon-taneity, movement as well as flow of time in space and ex-hibit the double-sidedness of the visible world.
The Bunhuangsa stone pagoda, constructed in AD. 634, National Treasure no. 30, has been named as 'brick-copied pagoda' since the Japanese-ruling period by scholars. It is said that the Chinese brick pagoda was its precedent model, however the Bunhuangsa Pagoda is the oldest of all the Chinese-style brick pagodas except one, the Sungaksa Pagoda. The Chinese pagoda cannot have been a precedent model to copy due to its complex detail of wood vestige, as the Bunhuangsa pagoda is simple form without ornament. Domestic brick pagodas cannot have been a precedent model to copy as well, because all the domestic brick pagodas are younger than the Bunhuangsa Pagoda. Therefore, the terminology 'brick-copied pagoda' is a fallacy; it is rather that later brick pagoda copied the precedent the Bunhuangsa stone pagoda. The Bunhuangsa Pagoda is simply a piled-up pagoda of thick or thin, big or small slates of stone, facing only one smooth side and therefore needing nothing to relate to brick. The originality of the pagoda is more related to simple piled-up Indian stone stupa rather than Chinese brick pagoda. The roof form of its gradually stepped projection comes from the harmika of the summit of Indian stupa. Contrary to general history, old Silla Dynasty imported Buddhism directly from India by sea. From written national history and by temple foundation history, the Indian Buddhism evangelist possibly made influence to the erecting of temple and pagoda. The original wrong terminology has made a harmful effect gradually to the naming of mass-styled stone pagoda of only carved stepped-roof form after brick-copied pagoda. The false term 'brick-copied pagoda' should be discarded, which comes with superficial observation based on toadyism to China and colonialism to Japan. Instead of the fallacious term, this paper suggests multi-storied 'piled-up pagoda with slate stone.'

The rural housing is a key element of the rural landscape. The studies on the rural housing have focused on folk housing, but this study focuses on the comtemporary rural housing. The research area is the eight rural settlements on the sea islands of Gyeongnam. This study may provide the base for an understanding Korean rural landscape through the analysis of the rural housing types with special reference to the roofing types and materials. Most roofing types but the flat roofing type belong to the traditional roofing types. Among the combined-style roofing(결합양식지붕) types, the pitched-and-flat roofing(경사-평지붕) type is about ten times more frequent than the pitched-and-pitched roofing(경사-경사지붕) type. The most frequent roofing materials are cement, precoated steel plate(컬러강판), and artificial slate(인조슬레이트). Five typical types of rural housing are derived from the remarkable combinations of roofing types and roofing materials in the research area.

A lotus flower pattern of the shape of straight and pointed petals has the forms whose lotus flowers are pointed, and is one of the representative forms of lotus flower pattern of Baekjae along with a round and a triangle protruded style. This style of lotus flower pattern was applied to roof-end tiles, halos of Buddhist images, containers of Buddha's bones, head supports, etc. from the Hanseong period to the Sabi period of Baekjae. However most of lotus flower patterns that remain today were used for the tiles of the Sabi period. Many of them were produced under the influence of the Northern Dynasties and the Southern Dynasties of China, and of Goryeo, which implies the active cultural exchange of Baekjae at that time. Among the present lotus flower patterns of the shape of the straight and pointed petals, that of the earliest time is from Gyeongdang district of Poongnab mud castle and belongs to the mid-fifth century. However there is a higher chance that the gradual subsequent excavation and research will find some tiles of the earlier period and other styles can also be unearthed.

This study was conducted to provide a method for fire suppression in a central area inside the roof of a wooden cultural property using a gas extinguishing apparatus, which is used as one of fire suppression methods with view to preventing valuable wooden properties inherited from ancestors from being destructed by fire. For a wooden property, it is very difficult to suppress fire when combustion spreads to a central area inside its roof, so it is impossible to put out a fire without destructing it. Such a fire fighting apparatus as a sprinkler, etc., installed in modern structures, is very effective, but the possibility of damaging a cultural property is highly probable after installment and operation, which leads to its low adaptability to a wooden property. Thus, the necessity of developing a fire suppress ion apparatus was raised to minimize the said problem and to obtain the desired results, and the need of making a plan on the installment was also raised based on the results of a test whose validity was proven. The central area inside a roof is a traditional - architectural style which is found in Korean wooden structures only, so it is impossible to discover similar cases in foreign countries. For this reason, this study was conducted to verify the effectiveness by developing a fixed fire suppression apparatus designed considering the speed and effectiveness in fire suppression. This study was sequentially carried out in the following steps. First, a frame for this study was made and the specific plan on a fire suppression method was established. Then, a fire suppression apparatus was installed. In the first step, the effectiveness for fire suppression was tested by installing valve open - punched - main water pores, and in the second step, the same effectiveness was tested by valve opened - punched - injection ports. For a wooden property similar to "Sungnyemun"(Gate of Exalted Ceremonies), its central area of the roof decides whether the fire suppression is successful or not, so the opinions on how to put out a fire were presented in this study, and thus the objective data to establish a method on fire suppression in a wooden structure(cultural property) was secured. Lastly, a scientific verification in the effectiveness for fire suppression measures was presented by installing a gas - fixed fire suppression apparatus.
In South Korea, mora than 90% of swine barns had open-style side wall by winch operation, and less than 5% of swine barns were semi-windowless or windowless style. The aisle ventilation system of the barn was changed to roof-wall ventilation system, and the width and the length of barns were 10~12 m and 30~50 m, respectively. The width of aisle satisfying energy save was 2~3 m. The re-modeled barns inhaled air through duct which was opened to aisle and exhaled through forced ventilation fans on the windowless wall which was accomplished by installing planks on the open wall. After remodelling, the culling ratio and energy cost were decreased from 11% (47 heads) to 3% (12 heads) and from 1,550,000 won to 730,000 won, respectively. Hence, re-modeled swine barns raising 400 heads could save 2,835,680 won during winter (from December to March).
This thesis aims to analyze the architectural form for the restoration of noogak(樓閣), Boje-roo(普濟樓) which was constructed at the central court of Beomeo-sa(梵魚寺). The results are as follow; 1. Boje-roo was established in 1700. By the constructional records and poetic essays of the times, the architectural of the establishment building was consisted fo two stories structure. The passage system for the approach to the court was the nuha-jinip(樓下進入), that is to say, one might walk between the columns of lower story of the building. And one could ascent the upper stairs and approach to the upper level, inner court. 2. By the remodelling in 1812, the building was varied to one story structure. Therefore the passage system for the approach to the inner court transformed from the nuha-jinip to the ugak-jinip(隅角進入), that is to say, one might ascent the atairs of the podium and could approach the inner court through the both sides of the building. 3. Under the Japanese imperialistic rule, the structure of it's roof and walls of Boje-roo were altered to the Japanese style. In 1965, the wooden columns were shifted to the concreted column, and the wooden wall-panels were shifted to the brick wall attached stone slates. 4. Conclusively speaking, for the restoration of Boje-roo, the establishment form in 1700 is the more proper than the remodelling form in 1812.
The purpose of this study is to examine the design characteristic of the facade of the main adminstration building in university. The main administration building which is a basic of educational facilities has various administration setups, such as the register's office, the student affairs section, the planing department, the general affair's office and so on. This building performs academic, administration, facilities management, and admissions service. Also, the building has an ideological, historical, and symbolic image, having an organic relationships with the other educational facilities. This study choose one hundred seven universities, except universities that does not provide information easily and the second campus which does not have the main administration building, as the subjects of the study. The analysis is derived from the design elements applied to facade design of the main administration building and this is divided into design principles(balance symmetry, contrast, rhythm), the formal composition(geometrical, linear), and the style of architecture(classical architecture and modern architecture). The results of the research are summarized as follows: The design characteristic of the facade of the main adminstration building in university has chronologically changed. First of all, in the 1940's, symmetry emphasized on the center of building, superimposition, division, pediment, and arch were marked. Then, superimposition was prominent in the 1950's and symmetry emphasized on the center of building was shown in the 1960s again. Flat roof was in the 1970's, 1990s and 2000's. Finally, pediment was dominant in the 1980's. The design elements of the main administration building can be samples of chronological styles of architecture. Facade design, with proper design of the past and recent times, includes the meaning that achieve the great purpose of the university by emphasizing visual images.
