  • No.2 PCM (Pickling and tandem cold rolling mill) at Pohang works was revamped in 2003. The purpose of this project is to produce carbon and stainless steel using conventional carbon production process, rolling and annealing. This paper introduces the applied facilities and technologies of PCM which are used in production of carbon and stainless steel. To realize the main purpose of this project, POSCO have developed laser weld technology in normal carbon and special steel (stainless, high carbon and high silicon). And this report describes the method which is developed to get down the surface defect of stainless 400 series. After revamping, No.2 PCM can have competitive power in this field and can supply the special steel using carbon rolling process.

  • The abnormal grain coarsening in wire rolling induces detrimental defects, such as jagged size tolorance, severe bending after heat treatments and drawing troubles, in the following secondary processes. Neishi et al observed that there is a band type region where grain coarsenting occurs in the plastic strain vs. deformation temperature plot. Based on the finding, we have investigate whether grain sizes and ferrite volume fractions are correlation to deformation strain with three kinds of wire rod diameters as for the different average deformation conditions. The samples were chosen from the No.2 Wire Rod Mill of POSCO where 3-roll type of finishing mill stand are used. It was found in the present work that the grain size and ferrite volume fraction of the rolled and cooled microstructure were changed with rolling reduction and rolling temperature. Abnormally grown grains at various observed points were also found. To have homogeneously fine grains of microstructure from the No. 2 Wire Rod Mill, it will be easier to control finish rolling temperature at around 750$^{\circ}C$ rather than to find another rolling schedule.

Optimization of edger model to increase rolling yields in the plate mill (Edger 압연모델 최적화를 통한 후판압연 실수율 개선)

  • To increase rolling yields by minimizing trimming losses of hot-rolled plate, optimization logic for the edger model has been developed. The logic to determine optimum edging amount model has been formulated on the basis of actual production rolling data. In case of broadside rolling, the fish tail shape at the sides of plate was better for reducing the crop loss and this could be achieved when the edging amount of broadside rolling was increased. At a given broadside rolling ratio, methodology to determine optimum edging amount for the finish rolling which could minimize the width deviation of plate were systematically derived. Therefore, for a given broadside rolling condition and the permissible tolerance in width deviation of plate, it was possible to optimize the edging amount in finish rolling to maximize rolling yields. The application of optimization logic in this study increased rolling yields from approximately 10% to 30% at various longitudinal eding raitos.

  • In the present work, cross-roil rolling was rallied out using a rolling mill in which the roll axes are tilted by $5^{\circ},\;7.5^{\circ},\;10^{\circ}$ towards the transverse direction of the roiled sample. The evolution of strain states during cross-roll rolling was investigated by three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) simulation. Parallel to cross-roll rolling, normal-rolling using a conventional rolling mill was also carried out in the same rolling condition for clarifying the effect of cross-roll rolling. It turned out that three shear rate components were all introduced to the rolled sample by the cross-roll rolling process, while only one shear rate component operated during normal-rolling.

  • The strip profile and shape control is one of the most important technologies in Hot Rolling Mill System. Because the unbalance of strip´s shape and wave appearance between stands has a bad effect on Hot Rolling Mill System by making the inferior thickness, strip´s damage and so forth in factories.   • This paper proposes a looperless tension control algorithm which is robust to disturbance and tensional variation in rolling process using SVR(Support Vector Regression). Hot rolling process which is global technology to coil steel after continuous finishing process for welded bars followed by roughing mill process, becomes hot issue. Finishing mill process not only makes it possible to produce ultra thin steel strip(0.8 mm) but enhance the quality of terminals of coil, which increases the productivity due to faster process. Constant tension control between stands in hot rolling process is essential to enhance the quality of steel. Sensorless tension control is under research by some advanced companies to replace the conventional tension control method because in continuous finishing mill process, it is impossible to install the looper used in conventional control system. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • A kinematic and dynamic optimal design of a new parallel-type rolling mill based upon Stewart platform manipulator is investigated. To provide sufficient degrees-of-freedom in the rolling process and the structural stability of each stand, a parallel manipulator with six legs is considered. The objective of this new parallel-type rolling mill is to permit an integrated control of the strip thickness, strip shape, pair crossing angle, uniform wear of the rolls, and tension of the strip. By splitting the weighted Jacobian matrices Into two parts, the linear velocity, angular velocity, force, and moment transmissivities are analyzed. A manipulability measure, the ratio of the manipulability ellipsoid volume and the condition number of a split Jacobian matrix, is defined. Two kinematic parameters, the radius of the base and the angle between two neighboring Joints, are optimally designed by maximizing the global manipulability measure in the entire workspace. The maximum force needed in the hydraulic actuator is also calculated using the structure determined through the kinematic analysis and the Plucker coordinates. Simulation results are provided.

  • In the foe of global competition, the requirements for the continuously increasing productivity, flexibility and quality(dimensional accuracy, mechanical properties and surface properties) have imposed a mai or change on steel manufacturing industries. Indeed, one of the keys to achieve this goal is the automation of the steel-making process using AI(Artificial Intelligence) techniques. The automation of hot rolling process requires the developments of several mathematical models for simulation and quantitative description of the industrial operations involved. In this paper, an on-line training neural network for both long-term teaming and short-term teaming was developed in order to improve the prediction of rolling force in hot rolling mill. This analysis shows that the predicted rolling force is very closed to the actual rolling force, and the thickness error of the strip is considerably reduced.

  • In plate mill studies on crop decrease of the top and bottom ends of hot rolled plate have been performed. The plane view shape for the thin plate after broadside rolling was controlled by roll gap difference with AGC in broadside rolling process. New models for thin slab after broadside rolling have been formulated based on the actual production rolling data to give optimal rolling condition A new plate rolling method called by dog bone rolling has been applied making it is possible to prevent non-uniform plastic deformation at top and bottom ends. By new rolling method crop losses of rolled plate have been improved by 10% on average with an effective fishtail crop shape.
