  • In this paper, we present a simplified analytic approach for the prediction of roll force to be applicable to the grooveless rolling. The approach is based on the deformation shape deduced from physical considerations and employs the assumption that the deformation homogeneously occurs in three directions. Strain and strain rate are calculated by the geometric relationships between those components and the prescribed deformation functions. Then, stress components are obtained from the Levy-Mises' flow rule. By integrating the stress components along the rolling direction, roll force are finally obtained. The prediction accuracy of the proposed model is examined through comparison with results obtained from the finite element analysis.

  • A Finite Element (FE)-based model is proposed for predicting the roll force in an edger. The model is developed on the basis of the hypothetical mode of rolling and the least-squares regression analysis from the result of the FE approach. This model reflects the effect of process variables affected by the roll force, and has three dimensionless parameters, I.e., shape factor, reduction ratio and width-to-thickness ratio. The model prediction compared satisfactorily with experiment observations.

  • he rolling contact behaviors between a smooth ball and a flat rough surface under dynamic load are intricately affected by many factors, such as the diameter of a ball, normal load and the roughness of a flat surface etc. Accordingly, the experimental study is done to find them on the base of elastic hysteresis loss as theoretical approach is very difficult. The experimental apparatus composed of damped-free vibration system is used. This paper investigates the damping characteristics on the rolling contact area through rolling friction force and logarithmic decrement versus displacement obtained in accordance with the variations of those factors, and presents a new experimental method to find out contact width using the relations of logarithmic decrement and rolling friction force with displacement.

  • The important factor to evaluate the running safety of a railway vehicle would be the interaction force between wheel and rail(derailment coefficient), for which is one of important factors to check the running safety of a railway vehicle that may cause a tragic accident. Element that analyze derailment coefficient is consisted of wheel load and lateral force. In this paper, studied about method that calculate vertical force(wheel load) by bending load of axle in rolling stocks.

  • The quality requirements for thickness accuracy in cold rolling continue to become more stringent, particularly in response to exacting design specification from automotive customers. One of the major impacts from the tighter tolerance level is more unusable product on the head end and tail end of tandem mill coils when the mill is in transition to or from steady state rolling condition. A strip thickness control system for a tandem cold steel rolling mills is composed with blocked non-interacting controller and controllers for strip thickness and tension control of each rolling stands. An intelligent mathematical model included an elastic deformation of strip has been developed and applied to the field in order to predict the rolling force. The simulated results showed that the effect of elastic recovery should be included the model, even if the effect of elastic compression was not important.

  • Republic of korea has begun operating high speed train service according as KTX service operation starts in 2004. Also, EMU whose maximum speed is over 150 kph will be starting to service with electrification and improvement of existing railroad. Moreover, metropolitan electric railways have begun an express service to increase scheduled speed. Therefore, running resistance of rolling stock becomes more important factor effects on the performance. Running resistance of rolling stock is the factor which is necessary for the performance or operation plan of rolling stock, and it's related to rolling friction, slip friction, drag force, gradient, acceleration, curvature, tunnel condition and so on. It is possible to be calculated by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). However it is predicted by experimental equation from running resistance test because of the complex calculation and manifold variables. In this paper, studies about running resistance of rolling stock is introduced, and each term of experimental equation is studied through theoretical approximation. Also, running resistance of rolling stock is estimated by the result of running resistance test, and effects being related to friction, drag force, gradient is examined.

  • Surface rolling is one of the micro plastic processes which yields local deformation of surface, and improves surface roughness, hardness and fatigue strength. With the use of gray cast iron (GC 30) as material for experiment, the changes in surface roughness were investigated. A number of previous theses were refered to the effects of surface rolling for this study. With the use of steel ball of excellent in surface roughness and hardness, and with the applied force 20Kgf, surface rolling was performed. The summary of the experiment is as follows: (1) With the fixed applied force 20Kgf and the ball of 8.726mm in diameter, surface roughness was found to be the most excellent. (2) Increase in hardness was most prominent in the first rolling, but less effective in the succeeding rolling. (3) Reduction on diameter was affected by the previous process before rolling, and about 70 to 90% of reduction was made in the first rolling.

  • It is very important to find out causes of strip pinching for the high quality of products and fer the stable operation of rolling system. We have examined the strip pinching from three points of view to find out the causes of strip pinching in rolling system: strip shape, rolling operation conditions, and behavior of strip. Wedge, off center, and difference of rolling force through CMD(Cross machine direction) are found to possibly provide major initial causes of strip pinching. Generally strip pinching occurred in the tail of strip. Thus, computer simulations by using a FEM code were also carried out to find out the initial mechanism of strip pinching depending upon the force and geometric boundary conditions at the time of strip tail rolling. The strong compression force effect due to the sudden release of strip tail from the work roll and non-uniform strip tail shape (ex. Fish tail) across the CMD were found to provide possible major causes of strip pinching.

  • Ring rolling is a type of forging for manufacturing large-diameter rings. Products manufactured by ring rolling are useful in the aerospace industry because of their excellent mechanical properties and high dimensional accuracy. The major components of the ring rolling process are a mandrel and main roll that shape the inside and outside of the ring, an axial roll that shapes the top and bottom of the ring, and a side rolls to position the ring. In this study, a simulation of ring rolling using finite element method (FEM) was performed. DEFORM, a commercial machining analysis program, was used. Based on the simulations, the mandrel feed force required for machining and the drive torque of the main roll were predicted. It was also possible to identify the metal flow caused by machining.
