  • Sheets of aluminum alloy 1100 were asymmetrically cold rolled in a rolling mill with different roll speeds. In order to promote the shear deformation during asymmetrical rolling, cold rolling without lubrication was performed with a roll speed ratio of 1.5/l.0. The evolution of texture components during asymmetrical rolling was investigated by the calculation of the orientation distribution function (ODF) using the monoclinic sample symmetry. The strain state during asymmetrical rolling was tackled by means of FEM calculations. Asymmetrical rolling gave rise to the development of pronounced strain gradients throughout the thickness layers which resulted in the formation of strong texture gradients in the aluminum sheet.

  • This paper presents a precision on-line model for the prediction of the roll force and tension distributions across the strip in hot strip rolling. The approach is based on an approximate 3-D theory of rolling, and in particular, considers the effect of pre-deformation of the strip, which occurs near the roll entrance before the strip enters the bite zone. The prediction accuracy of the proposed model is examined through comparison with the predictions from the 3-D finite element models.

  • In order to investigate the evolution of strain states during screw rolling, the samples of pure copper rod were rolled in a three-roll screw rolling mill. Microstructure observations and hardness measurements were carried out for examining the deformation during screw rolling. In addition, the finite element method (FEM) was employed to calculate. The strain states reveal that the shear strain plays a dominant role in the deformation during screw rolling.

  • A mathematical model for the analysis of roll gap phenomena in the strip temper rolling process is described. A new approach to solve the roll indentation and diverging problem in modeling of severe temper rolling cases is obtained by adopting the preliminary displacement principle of two contacted rough bodies to describe the friction behavior in the roll gap. The mechanical peculiarities of the temper rolling process, such as a high friction value with high roughness rolls and a non-circular contact arc, low reduction and non-negligible entry and exit elastic zones as well as central preliminary displacement zone etc., are all taken into account. The deformation of work rolls is calculated with the influence function method and an arbitrary contact are shape is permitted. The strip deformation is modeled by the slab method and the entry and exit elastic deformation zones are included. The preliminary displacement principle is used to determine the boundaries and to calculate the friction of the central preliminary displacement zone. The model is calibrated against the production mill data and installed in the setup computer of a temper rolling mill in POSCO. The validity and precision of the model have been proven through a comparison of the measured roll forces and the predicted ones.

  • The abnormal grain coarsening in wire rolling induces detrimental defects, such as jagged size tolorance, severe bending after heat treatments and drawing troubles, in the following secondary processes. Neishi et al observed that there is a band type region where grain coarsenting occurs in the plastic strain vs. deformation temperature plot. Based on the finding, we have investigate whether grain sizes and ferrite volume fractions are correlation to deformation strain with three kinds of wire rod diameters as for the different average deformation conditions. The samples were chosen from the No.2 Wire Rod Mill of POSCO where 3-roll type of finishing mill stand are used. It was found in the present work that the grain size and ferrite volume fraction of the rolled and cooled microstructure were changed with rolling reduction and rolling temperature. Abnormally grown grains at various observed points were also found. To have homogeneously fine grains of microstructure from the No. 2 Wire Rod Mill, it will be easier to control finish rolling temperature at around 750$^{\circ}C$ rather than to find another rolling schedule.

  • Roll forming refers to the production of long plate-molded products, such as panels, pipes, tubes, channels, and frames, by continuously causing the bending deformation to thin plates using rotating rolls. As the roll forming method has advantages in terms of mass production because of its excellent productivity, the size of the roll forming industry has been continuously increasing and the roll forming method is increasingly being used in diverse industrial fields as a very important processing method. Furthermore, as the roll forming method mainly depends on the continuous bending deformation of the plate materials, the time and the cost of the heterogeneous materials developed in the process are relatively large when considered from the viewpoint of plastic working because many processes are continuously implemented. The existing studies on roll forming manufacturing have reported the loss of large amounts of time and materials when the raw materials or product types were changed; further, they have stated that the use of this method can hardly guarantee the uniformity of the formed shapes and the consistency in terms of size and cannot detect all the defects occurring during the mass production and related to the dimensions. Therefore, in this research, a real-time process data-based smart roll forming method that can be applied to multiple products was studied. As a result, a roll forming system was implemented that remembers and automatically sets the changes in the finely adjusted values of the supplied quantities of individual heterogeneous materials so that the equipment setting changing time for heterogeneous material replacements or changes in the products being produced can be shortened. It also secures the uniformity of the products so that more competitive and precise slide-rail products can be mass-produced with improvements in the quality, price, and productivity of the products.

  • In the roll forming process, a sheet or strip of metal is continuously and progressively formed into a desired cross-sectional profile by feeding it through a series of forming roll. Accordingly, it is important to maintain the material properties of the initial sheet and deform uniformly during the roll forming. The roll forming process was estimated in consideration of some factors such as material properties, strip thickness, roll diameter, roll velocity, and the deformation of the material that influence the forming length. The hydroforming technology has been recognized as a new technique in manufacturing industry, especially in automotive industry. The formed pipe in used in hydroforming process is manufactured by the roll forming. The formability during hydroforming is very sensitive to the state of pipes which are made by roll forming. Particularly the amount of hardening during roll forming affects the formability. Therefore, it is necessary to design the optimum roll flower to reduce the local hardening. In this paper, optimum roll flower which has uniform strain distribution through sheet width was obtained by comparing strain distribution in various roll flower. Finite element analysis(FEA) is performed to estimate the strain distribution related to hardening by roll forming. A numerical analysis is carried out by SHAPE-RF.

  • We examined the working fracture behavior of a silicon-steel strip caused by deformation deviation by performing a pilot rolling test. The deformation deviation resulted in the edges (or center portion) of the strip being stretched and the other parts being compressed in the rolling direction; this was because of different degrees of deformation in these parts. We designed roll grooves shape to reflect the role of roll bending, which generates waviness in the strip in an actual cold rolling process, into the pilot rolling test. The material used in the rolling test was highsilicon steel (about 3%). The results of the test showed that the type of fracture in the strip specimen varied with the magnitude of the deformation deviation. The tensile stress produced at the strip edges because of the center waviness in the rolling direction was a crucial factor that resulted in edge cracking and a zigzag-shaped fracture at the center.

  • Press processing is one of the best machining methods capable of mass production, satisfying dimensional, shape and quality among the methods of processing a metal plate. Among them, Fine blanking is a method of obtaining a precise cross-section such as machining of the shear surface shape. In this research, Using SCP-1 and SHP-1 materials. The deformation behaviors of the material flow affecting the die height of the shear section in accordance with the position of the V-ring in the Fine blanking were compared and analyzed. Result of interpretation, It was confirmed that the force acts on the position where the material flow direction accurately forms the die roll that the material of SCP-1 is at a position of 1.5 mm and the material of SHP-1 is at 2.0 mm. As a result, it was confirmed that the state of fo1111ing the shear surface by the V-ring was excellent. Using analysis results, In the experiment, the height of the die roll was considered by applying The position of the V-ring was 1.5 mm in SCP-1 and 2.0 mm in SHP-1. As a result of comparing the height of the die rolls, the height values of the die rolls were different from each other, It has been considered that the tendency of the die rolls to coincide with each other. It is considered that the difference of the die roll height is caused by the pressure input of the V-ring. In this study, the deformation behavior of the material(In addition to the position of the V-ring, the flow direction of the material depends on the shape of the V-ring and the Indentation amount) is considered to be an important factor in determining die roll height.
