  • It is well known that the standard penetration test (SPT) has been used in all over the world to get geotechnical properties of the ground. However, it is difficult to apply the SPT to the dense sand, gravel, weathered rock, etc. For the application of the SPT in these grounds, it is necessary to change in the diameter and the impact energy of the SPT. For the improvement of site investigation technology, Large Penetration Testing device (KICT-type LPT) was developed and applied to the in situ condition. The drop height and weight of the hammer in developed system were decided as 760mm and 150kg, respectively. And the developed sampler has the inner diameter of 63 mm and the length of 500 mm with the adjustment of energy ratio to the SPT of 1.5. In this study, the performance of KICT-type LPT was evaluated by using a calibration chamber system and pile driving analyzer (PDA)

  • This study is to clarify the comparative relationship and a mechanical anisotropy of rock on the subject of granite distributed in the Namwon area Uniaxial compressive and Brazilian strengths with respect to the horizontal and vertical axes of granite are shown the linear relation. In the case of the result of the p-wave velocity measurement. it is represented that the velocity of vortical direction is faster about 10 to 15% than other two horizontal directions. The difference between velocities is caused by a developmental pattern of microcracks distributed in rock. Moreover, this result is very consistent with the result investigated through thin sections. The proportion of uniaxial compression strength to Index of point load strength ($Is_{(50)}$) is 18~20 times in case of granite. Uniaxial compressive strength is relatively good relationship with point load strength, Schmidt hammer rebound value, and tensile strength point load strength of them is the best comparative relationship. It is indicated that point load test is the most useful tool to estimate uniaxial compressive strength, comparing with other experimental methods.

  • To improve the pile design efficiency(design bearing capacity/the strength of materials) from 70 percent(160tonf) to 80 percent(190tonf), this paper analysed the existing pile loading test data and performed the precise dynamic loading test and Bi-directional loading test for the first time in Korea. Analysis result of the existing dynamic loading test data by Davisson method showed that bearing capacity of piles penetrated at weathered rock stratum(N=50/15) exceeded 190tonf. But the analysis result by CAPWAP method showed that piles less than the target bearing capacity were 40% due to the lack of impact energy. To get the target bearing capacity from the dynamic loading test, using the hammer over 6tonf to trigger the enough impact energy is necessary. Allowable bearing capacty of Bi-directional static loading test by Davisson method was 260.0~335tonf(ave. 285.3tonf) and exceeded overwhelmingly the target capacity. And this exceeded the bearing capacity of precise dynamic loading test(ave. 202.3tonf) performed on the same piles over 40%. The difference between the capacity of Bi-directional loading test and dynamic loading test was caused by the insufficient impact energy during dynamic loading test and increase by interlocking effect by near piles during Bi-directional static loading test.

  • In this study, we investigated the stone materials used in the Woldae of Kwanghwamun gate to estimate their provenances. The Woldae was partly reconstructed in 2010 using red-colored original stone and greyish new stone. We carried out geological survey in Mt. Bukhan (Bukhansan) and Mt. Surak (Suraksan) to estimate the source of stone, where red-colored granitic rocks are widely distributed. Though the petrographical features of the granitic rocks from the surveyed area are quite similar, there exists a slight variation of magnetic susceptibility and color index of the rocks: the granitic rocks from Mt. Surak have higher value of magnetic susceptibility and clearer reddish feature. A series of evidence, such as historical records, stone cutting traces and petrographical features, for the source of stone materials used in the Woldae tells that Mt. Surak would have been the provenance for the stone materials used in the Woldae. We also conducted a nondestructive test to examine the physical property of the rocks. The original stone shows low compressive strength (147 MPa) due to the weathering, whereas the rock in Mt. Surak has higher compressive strength (244 MPa) capable of being used as building materials. If there were any difficulties to use the granitic rocks in Mt. Surak, some granitic rocks that have similar petrological characteristics, such as Changsu stone and Yeongjung stone from the Pocheon area, could be used as building material instead.

  • This study is to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties on the Ipseok-dae columnar joints of Mt. Mudeung National Park. For these purposes, physical and mechanical properties as well as discontinuity property on the Mudeungsan tuff, measurement of vibration and local meteorology around columnar joints, and ground deformation by self-weight of columnar joints were examined. For the physical and mechanical properties, average values were respectively 0.65% for porosity, 2.69 for specific gravity, 2.68 g/cm3 for density, and 2411 m/s for primary velocity, 323 MPa for uniaxial compressive strength, 81 GPa Young's modulus, and 0.25 for Poisson's ratio. For the joint shear test, average values were respectively 3.15 GPa/m for normal stiffness, 0.38 GPa/m for shear stiffness, 0.50 MPa for cohesion, and 35° for internal friction angle. The JRC standard and JRC chart was in the range of 4~6, and 1~1.5, respectively. The rebound value Q of silver schmidt hammer was 57 (≒ 90 MPa). It corresponds 20% of the uniaxial compressive strength of intact rock. The maximum vibration value around the Ipseok=dae columnar joints was in the range of 0.57 PPV (mm/s)~2.35 PPV (mm/s). The local meteorology of surface temperature, air temperature, humidity, and wind on and around columnar joints appeared to have been greatly influenced the weather on the day of measurement. For the numerical analysis of ground deformation due to its self-weight of the Ipseok-dae columnar joints, the maximum displacement of the right ground shows when the ground distance is approximately 2 m, while drastically decreased by 2~4 m, thereafter was insignificant. The maximum displacement of the middle ground shows when the ground distance is approximately 0~2 m, while drastically decreased by 3~10 m, thereafter was insignificant. The maximum displacement of the left ground shows when the ground distance is approximately 5~6 m, while drastically decreased by 6~10 m, thereafter was insignificant.
