Evaluating stability of dam foundations is one of the prime areas of any rock engineering investigations. Despite best engineering efforts in the design and construction of dam foundations, the foundation regime of a constructed dam suffers deterioration due to continuous erosion from backwater current of dam discharge and dynamic effects of loading and unloading process. Even during construction, development of frequent cracks due to sudden thermal cooling of concrete blocks is not uncommon. This paper presents two case studies from India and Bhutan. In the first case, the back current of water discharge from the Srisailam dam in India had continuously eroded the apron and has eaten into the dam foundation. In the second case with dam construction at Tala Hydroelectric Project in Bhutan, sudden overflow of river during the construction stage of dam had led to development of three major cracks across the dam blocks. This was ascribed to adiabatic cooling effect of concrete blocks overlain by chilled water flow. Non-destructive evaluation of rock mass condition in the defect regime by the borehole GPR survey helped in arriving at the crux so as to formulate appropriate restoration plan.
Blast-induced ground vibrations by a significant amount of explosives may cause many problems for mining slope stability. Geological discontinuities have a significant influence on the transmission of dynamic pressure of detonation and according to their position relative to the slope face may have damaging or useful impacts on the slope stability. In this study, the effect of geological discontinuities was investigated by modelling a slope with geological discontinuities through applying the dynamic pressure in three-dimensional discrete element code (3DEC). The geological discontinuities in four states that generally apperceived in mine slopes are considered. Given the advantages of the pressure decay function defined by some researcher, this type of function was used to develop the pressure-time profile. The peak particle velocities (PPV) values were monitored along an axis by utilization of Fish programming language and the results were used as an indicator to measure the effects. As shown in the discontinuity-free model, PPV empirical models are reliable in rocks lacking discontinuities or tightly jointed rock masses. According to the other results, the empirical models cannot be used for the case where the rock mass contains discontinuities with any direction or dip. With regard to PPVs, when the direction of discontinuities is opposite to that of the slope face, the dynamic pressure of detonation is significantly damped toward the slope direction at the surface of discontinuities. On the other hand, when the discontinuities are horizontal, the dynamic pressure of detonation affects the rock mass to a large distance.

The construction site for $\bigcirc\bigcirc$ transformer substation was located at a mountain valley. In order to prepare the site, the valley was first filled with crushed rock debris up to 63m. Since the main concern of this project is to minimize differential settlement of the foundation of transformer facilities, dynamic compaction was performed every 7m followed by reinforcement with EMP(Ez-Mud Piling). The EMP is one of bored piling methods, in which a hole is bored by means of air percussion and maintain by injecting Ez-Mud. Then a PHC pile (Pretensioned spun High strength Concrete pile) is embedded and finalized with a hammer. In this study, bearing capacities and long term behavior of a pile installed by EMP were investigated. To achieve these objectives, a series of tests such as static and dynamic load tests were conducted. In addition, a construction quality control standard was proposed based on the test results.
This paper investigates the effect of rock discontinuities on a shear stress wave that is induced by earthquake or blasting and provides the result of numerical parametric studies. The numerical tests of different conditions of rock and discontinuity have been carried out after confirming that the numerical approach is valid throughout a verification analysis from which the test results were compared with a theoretical solution. In-situ stress condition was considered as a rock condition and internal friction angle and cohesive value, which are the shear strength parameters, were considered as discontinuities condition. The joint inclination angle was also taken into account as a parameter. With the various conditions of different parameters, the test results showed that a shear stress wave propagating through a mass is highly influenced by the shear strength of discontinuities and the condition of joint inclination angle as well as in-situ stress. The study results indicate that when earthquake or blasting-induced dynamic loading propagates through a jointed rock mass or a stratified soil ground the effect of in-situ stress and discontinuities including a stratum boundary should be taken into account when evaluating the dynamic effect on nearby facilities and structures.
With the increase of expansion and use of the underground space, the possibility of an underground explosion by terrorists is increasing. In this study, after modeling a circular tunnel excavated at a depth of 50m, an explosion load was applied to the inside of the tunnel. As for the explosion load, the explosion load of the maximum explosive amount for six types of vehicle booms proposed by ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms) was calculated. For the rock mass around the circular tunnel, three types of rock grades were selected according to the support pattern suggested in the domestic tunnel design. Nonlinear dynamic analysis was performed to evaluate the influence of the ground structure by examining the surface displacement using the explosion load and rock mass characteristics as parameters. As a result of the analysis, for grade 1 rock, the influence on the uplift of the surface should be considered, and for grade 2 and 3 rocks, the influence on a differential settlement should be considered. In particular, for grade 3 rocks, detailed analysis is required for ground-structure interaction within 40m. Also, it is considered that the influence of Young's modulus is the main factor for the surface displacement.

To secure long-term structural safety of underground openings for radioactive waste disposal, the proper structural safety analyses are required. Especially, the structural analysis for underground openings should consider the effects of groundwater pressure. The objective of this study is to develop the structural analysis method for saturated rock masses. In this study, the interaction between groundwater distribution and structural behavior of rock masses are carried out to develop the structural analysis method of saturated rock masses. Then, a 3-Dimensional Multi-Phase Dynamic Analysis Program (MPDAP-3D) has been developed by modifying the existing MPDAP which is based on the concept of 2-dimensional two-phase media.
Dynamic fracture processes of rock were analyzed to investigate the influence of the initiation error of the delay detonator in smooth blasting. The analysis models for the smooth blasting considered two blast geometries with three charge holes, and the simultaneous initiations without initiation error, with the initiation error of electronic delay detonator and with the initiation error of pyrotechnically delay detonator(DS detonator) were applied to the charge holes. In order to examine the effect of electronic and DS initiation detonator on the smooth blasting, the fracture process results were analyzed statistically.
A FE-BE procedure is presented for dynamic analysis of concrete arch dams. In this technique, dam body is discretized by finite elements, while foundation rock is handled by three dimensional boundary element formulation. This would allow a rigorous inclusion of dam-foundation rock interaction, with no limitations imposed on geometry of canyon shape. Based on this method, a previously developed program is modified, and the response of Morrow Point arch dam is studied for various ratios of foundation rock to dam concrete elastic moduli under an empty reservoir condition. Furthermore, the effects of canyon shape on response of dam, is also discussed.
Ground vibrations are an integral part of the process of rock blasting. The sudden acceleration of the rock by the detonation gas pressure acting on the drillhole walls induces dynamic stresses in the surrounding rock mass. This sets up a wave motion in the ground much like the motion in a bowl of jelly when disturbed by the action of a spoon. The wave motion spreads concentrically from the blasting site, particularly along the ground surface, and is therefore attenuated, since its fixed energy is spread over a greater and greater mass of material as it moves away from its origin. Some theoretical aspects of the generation and propagation of vibrations produced in rock blasting are analyzed; although it must be indicated that this is just a mere approximation to the problem, as the actual phenomena are much more complex owing to the interaction of different types of waves and their modifying mechanics.

The behavior characteristics of underground structures are reported as they are not affected by their dynamic characteristics such as surface structures, but by dynamic characteristics of soil and rock surrounding the underground structures. Therefore, dynamic behavior of surrounding soil and rock dominates the dynamic behavior of the underground structure. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the dynamic response (longitudinal deformation and ovaling deformation) of the underground structure under earthquake loading. The dynamic responses of the underground structures were evaluated with varying earthquake conditions, soil conditions, and structural conditions using conventional closed-form solution of seismic behavior of underground structure. In addition, shaking table tests were conducted to simulate the earthquake loading and the dynamic behavior of the model was analyzed.
