  • Lots of roadway tunnel have been almost constructed in forms of closely-spaced tunnel in korea. If closely-spaced tunnel is not constructed at a sufficient distance between tunnels, the problem of stability can occur. However, the case that can not secure a sufficient distance between tunnels can occur due to a difficulty in buying a lot and an issue of popular complaint and environmental disruption. Generally, tunnels are not influenced by each other when a center distance between tunnels is two times longer than tunnel diameter under the complete elastic ground and five times under the soft ground. In this study, the scaled model tests of closely-spaced tunnel by using homogeneous material were performed and induced displacements were measured around the tunnel openings during excavation. The influence of distance between tunnels on the behavior of closely-spaced tunnel was investigated.

  • This paper deals with the numerical study for excavation crossing the fault zone and the change of support pattern in field. The numerical analyses by FLAC program were performed to evaluate the suitable support pattern influenced by the width of Fault Zone, considering rock mass condition(RMR classification). Based on the results, it is found that partial reinforcement or degrading support pattern is suitable, when the width of Fault is under 3m. But when the width of Fault is more than 6m(0.5D), extra support pattern for fault zone is acceptable. At field, this result is generally used as a guide in the construction of roadway tunnel, but it is also possible to vary this assessment along the condition of fault.

  • The main goals of the automotive suspension systems are to isolate roadway unevenness from the tire and to improve vehicle stability. To overcome the performance limitation of the passive systems the active systems which completely replace the passive spring and damper elements with a force generating actuator has been studied. However, application of the system has been limited because it has required a significant amount of power. Recently, alternative systems which retain passive elements but include active elements have been developed to reduce the power required. Those systems are mostly focused on the control system which compresses the spring-damper directly. In this study, a new type of power efficient control system which makes the spring-damper unit slide in side way is studied. After constructing the control system including dynamic modeling and motion control, two types of alternative control systems are compared in view of power consumption and dynamic attitudes such as roll responses as well as heave responses. Also, a half car bond graph model is developed to show clearly the significant differences in performances between two control systems.

  • In deep mining, the lateral deformation of strip coal pillar appears to be a new characteristic. In order to study the lateral deformation of coal-mass, a monitoring method and monitoring instrument were designed to investigate the lateral deformation of strip coal pillar in Tangkou Coalmine with the mining depth of over 1000 m. Because of without influence of repeated mining, the bedding sandstone roof is easy to break and the angle between maximum horizontal stress and the roadway is small, the maximum lateral deformation is only about 287 mm lower than the other pillars in the same coalmine. In deep mining, the energy accumulation and release cause a discontinuous damage in the heterogeneous coal-mass, and the lateral deformation of coal pillar shows discontinuity, step and mutation characters. These coal-masses not only show a higher plasticity but also the high brittleness at the same time, and its burst tendency is more obvious. According to the monitoring results and theoretical calculations, the yield zone of the coal pillar width is determined as 15.6 m. The monitoring results presented through this study are of great significance to the stability analysis and design of coal pillar.

  • Bicycle is an environment-friendly transport mode contributing to a more sustainable transportation systems. To innovatively increase the use of bicycle as a significant transport mode, bicycle-friendly roadway environment should be provided. This study proposes a method to evaluate cycling environment based on the analysis of data collected from an specially equipped probe bicycle. The inertial measurement unit(IMU) consisting of a gyro sensor, accelerometer, and a global positioning systems(GPS) receiver was installed on the probe bicycle. Cycling stability index(CSI) and bicycle speed data were used as inputs of the proposed evaluation framework adopting the Fault Tree Analysis, which is a well-known technique for the risk analysis. The outcomes of this study will serve as an intelligent assesment tool for cycling environment.

  • Emulsified Asphalt Mixture(EAM) is more environmentally-friendly and cost-effective than typical Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) because EAM does not produce carcinogenic substances, e.g., naphtha, kerosene, during the both of manufacturing and roadway construction process. Also, it does not require heating the aggregates and asphalt binder. However, EAM has some disadvantages. Generally EAM has a less load bearing capacity and more moisture susceptibility than conventional HMA. The study evaluated a Fiber modified EAM (FEAM) to increase load bearing capacity and to decrease moisture susceptibility of EAM. Modified Marshall mix design was developed to find Optimum Emulsion Contents (OEC), Optimum Water Contents (OWC), and Optimum Fiber Contents (OFC). A series of test were performed on the fabricated specimen with OBC, OWC, and OFC. Tests include Marshall Stability, Indirect Tensile Strength, and Resilient modulus test. Comparison analyses were performed among EAM, Fiber modified EAM (FEAM), and typical HMA to verify the applicability of EAM and FEAM in the field. Test results indicated that both of EAM and FEAM have an enough capability to resist medium traffic volume based on the Marshall mix design criteria. Also the study found that fiber modification is effective to increase the load bearing capacity and moisture damage resistance of EAM.

  • Most of roadway tunnels have been constructed in the form of parallel twin tunnel in Korea. If parallel twin tunnel does not have a sufficient separation distance between tunnels, the problem of tunnel stability can occur. Generally, it is reported that tunnels are not influenced by each other when a center distance between tunnels is two times longer than tunnel diameter under the complete elastic ground and five times under the soft ground. In this study, the scaled model tests of closely-spaced parallel twin tunnel using homogeneous material are performed and induced displacements are measured around the tunnel openings during excavation. The influence of separation distance between tunnels on the behavior of closely-spaced tunnel is investigated. The experimental results are expressed by the induced displacement vector and progress of crack during construction and at failure. The results show that based on the analysis of induced displacement at the crown during construction, the additional displacement of the preceding tunnel induced by the excavation of following tunnel decreases as the separation distance between twin tunnel increases until the center to center distance is two times of tunnel diameter. Beyond this point, however, the additional displacement has become stabilized.
