Building Information modeling is playing an important role in transforming the construction industry. It helped the industry with better visualization, minimum design errors, and excellent planning of the construction activities. Time and cost saving can be effectively achieved by using BIM for any construction project. It improves information exchange between all the project stakeholders. However, the development of earthwork 3D BIM is still underway and has not been fully implemented yet. This paper presents the study of a complete process for Earthwork BIM design using Autodesk Civil 3D. A real site road construction project is used as a case study to explain the process of earthwork modeling, starting from laser scanning to 3D model. Quantity take off calculation is very important part of any road construction project so during this study earthwork volume from two 3D earthwork model is calculated. The results obtained through this study will be the basis for future work which has been concluded in this paper.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between height of cutting and filling as well as the height of slope of roadsides. It also suggests the rational height of slope to minimize topographical damage in road construction. Hence, in this study, 44 cases of expert's opinions related to height of slope in Environmental Impact Assessment(EIA) for road construction projects are reviewed, and 23 cases of data related to height of cutting and filling in EIA for road construction projects are used for analyzing relationship between height of slopes and height of cutting or filling of roadside. The results are as follows; Most of heights of cutting, filling and slope in EIA for road construction are over the required standards 20 or 30m(in case of cutting) and 10 or 15m(in case of filling). It also shows that there is high-level correlation between height of cutting and filling and height of slope of roadside. According to regression analysis, it is suggested that the general standard of each heights of cutting and filling are 25.33~33.23m(in case of cutting) and 14.56~18.08m(in case of filling), but it should be considered in EIA review for road construction projects that these heights suggested in this study are over the required standards.

With the recent development of intelligence and automation technologies for construction machinery, the demand for safety and efficiency of road-cutting operations has continued to increase. In response to this, a double-blade road cutter has been developed that can automatically cut roads. However, a double-blade road cutter has a load difference between the two blades due to the ground and wear conditions of the cutting blades. The difference in load between the two blades distorts the direction of travel of the cutter. In this study, a vision sensor-based driving guide technology was developed to correct the driving path of road cutters. In addition, we developed a load-sensing technology that detects blade loads in real-time and controls driving speed in the event of overload.

The use of road cutters in the maintenance of obsolete underground facilities maintains polluting dust, cutting sludge, etc, polluting the air environment, soil, and water, causing civil complaints caused by noise, and consequently interrupting work. Therefore, it is time for eco-friendly pavement cutting technology for fugitive dust and cutting sludge emission management and noise management. This study was based on research by the development of eco-friendly pavement cutting technology in urban areas. In this study, the current state of existing road cutters is investigated and the patented technology analysis of road cutters is conducted to derive the design elements of eco-friendly pavement cutting technology.

This study has conducted case studies in order to suggest alternatives to the historical data-based estimate system. Price fluctuation calculation methods based on historial cost indexes, standard estimate and construction cost indexes were applied to 9 road construction sites in Jeju for an analysis. As a result, in 5 construction sites (about 56% of 9 sites), the index control rate calculated based upon historical data-based estimate system was higher than that calculated based upon standard estimate and construction cost indexes. Thus the establishment of the requirements for the adjustment of contract price due to price fluctuation delays, which leads to a significant difference in price fluctuation amount. And, in an analysis of construction cost indexes, the indexes for road construction were used for calculating index control rate which ranges from 2.0 to 9.4 percent, indicating the time of construction amount and price fluctuation application has a significant influence on index control rate.

Construction industry is facing difficult challenges in terms of productivity, manpower, and industrial accidents. Currently, along with the 4th Industrial Revolution, various high-tech technologies are emerging, and efforts are being made to solve the problem by applying the technologies related to the 4th Industrial Revolution to the construction industry. As part of these efforts, research is being conducted to develop a construction equipment control system to increase productivity and safety at earthworks sites where many and various types of construction equipment are involved, and the system needs a function to increase productivity by optimizing the moving path of construction equipment. In the case of trucks, the location of the temporary road must be optimized in order to optimize the path of movement in the construction site. However, only matters related to the quality standard of temporary roads have been suggested so far, and there is no standardized process for efficiently determining the location of temporary roads. In this paper, the factors and its importance related to the location of the temporary road were identified through field surveys and interviews with experts, and a method for determining the location of the temporary road was presented. It was confirmed that the suggested method through a case study could improve the productivity of earthwork.
Forest roads are essential for forest resource management. This study investigated and compared forest road and road policy data in Korea and the United States to improve future forest road policies in Korea. As compared to the United States (9.5 m/ha), Korea has much lower forest road density (3.19 m/ha) and has been actively constructing new forest roads. The Korea Forest Service leads forest road policy in Korea by providing subsidies for new road construction in non-national forests. The budget for forest roads accounted for 9.1% of the total Korea Forest Service budget in 2010 - 2015 and 73.5% of it was used for new road construction. Korean forest road policies have been distinctively changed over the past decades; e.g., an increase in forest road mileage in the 1990s, an increase in forest road standards in the 2000s, and an increase in the mileage of higher standard roads in the 2010s. In comparison to Korea, the United States has focused on road maintenance and road decommissioning since 2001. The budget for forest roads accounted for 2.9% of the total USDA Forest Service budget in 2011 - 2016 and 82.2% of it was used for operations and maintenance. Our study results suggest that forest road policies in Korea should start focusing on road maintenance and decommissioning, if needed.
Forest road is an essential infrastructure for forest management such as the composition and management of forest resources, timber and forest byproduct production & transportation. It has recently been utilized forest recreation and forest sports as well as also forest pest control, forest fire prevention and evolution. When you build a forest road, the economic function in the forest is activated, so that it can result in the ripple effect of induced employment, value-added creation and production inducement. The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact caused by forest road construction occurring as the overall economy. For analysis it was applied to inter industry analysis method that is a method for analyzing the quantitative cross-correlation. The data were used in the Input-Output Tables In 2014, the Bank of Korea. When you build a forest road, economic effect due to the construction of the forest road is generated and economic effects are also generated due to the increase in the production of forest products after the construction of the forest road. Therefore, we will analyze the economic impact of the two effects. The estimated economic value of forest products, which is the economic effect of forest product cultivation, was calculated through some assumptions and the economic ripple effect was analyzed. The forest road construction sector is defined as land clearing and reclamation, and irrigation project construction and the forestry forest products sector is defined as the sum of raw timber, edible forest products and misc. forest products. In total, 32 sectors were classified, and except for the two sectors defined as forest road construction and forestry forest products, the remaining sectors were integrated according to the classification system of 30 integrated classifications of the Bank of Korea. As a result, the production inducement coefficient for forest construction was analyzed to be 2.767 and the production inducement coefficient for forestry forest products was analyzed to be 1.565. This means that 2,767 times the production of forest road construction investment is induced in the whole industry and the production of 1.562 times the amount of forestry forest products is caused by the whole industry as the production of forestry forest products increases. The value added inducement coefficient for forest road construction was 0.977 and the value added inducement coefficient for forestry forest products was 0.985. Forest road are essential infrastructure for forestry development and should be continuously invested because they are essential elements of timber production and forest byproduct production with functions such as forest management, forest recreation, forest sports, and town connection.
